Both classically trained and shaped by their work with avant-garde icon Derek Bailey\, Min and Kytasty bridge centuries-old traditions with bold contemporary expression. \nMin’s work\, “Xi Xi\, Cuo Cuo (Wash and Rub)\,” draws inspiration from the overlooked history of Chinese immigrants in the Mississippi Delta. “They lived there for over a century\,” she explains. “In the segregated South\, they ran grocery stores and laundries that served both Black and white communities. My music reflects how they quietly bridged a divided world.” \nKytasty’s “Travel Music” features a rare bandura with a remarkable past. “It was crafted by Iosyp Shizhny\, a pioneering performer who fled the USSR via Manchuria and settled in Shanghai\,” Julian says. “He escaped China in 1948 and brought the instrument to Buenos Aires. I discovered it in 1987\, brought it to New York – and it’s still going strong. I can’t wait to play it with Min.” \nFor Min\, the performance also echoes a poignant memory: performing in Kyiv in 1988 as part of a Chinese cultural exchange. “Through this music\, we continue that spirit of connection—and send a prayer for peace in Ukraine and around the world.” \nBoundless is more than a title – it’s a journey across time\, borders\, and imagination. DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nAARON LEE TASJAN\nAaron Lee Tasjan was experiencing the worst bout of imposter syndrome of his career when he sat down and wrote Todd Snider a vulnerable email asking for advice. Tasjan\, despite writing and recording some of the most astute Americana rock songs of the last decade and being nominated for a Grammy\, just didn’t see a future for an independent singer\, songwriter\, and guitarist like himself. \nSnider read Tasjan’s email and immediately replied: “I think I have some ideas. I’ll write you back tomorrow.” \nThe next morning\, Tasjan awoke to a signature Todd Snider missive for how to move forward as an artist. It was a novel-length email that read like the battle plans for the Invasion of Normandy. Do this\, Snider wrote. Then this. But never that. The specifics don’t matter — besides\, that’d be giving away the secret — but Tasjan devoured his mentor’s words and took them to heart. \nHe began writing feverishly\, unbothered by expectations and immune to any pressure to match his acclaimed albums like In the Blazes\, Karma for Cheap\, or his most recent\, 2024’s Stellar Evolution. When he was through\, Tasjan had Get Over It\, Underdog\, his most inspiring LP to date. Produced by Tasjan and his longtime sound engineer Mark Miller\, the album is a celebration of the power of songwriting\, the unbreakable bond of friendship\, and the determination of the dark horse. \n“I went to the ultimate oasis for a singer\, songwriter\, and troubadour: Todd Snider. And he said\, in very Todd fashion\, ‘You can find your path forward by going backwards\,’” Tasjan says with a laugh. “But he was right. I set aside my ego\, played shows solo without my band\, and wrote a lot of songs. In that process\, I found my confidence again.” \nTragically\, however\, he lost his mentor. Snider died shortly after Get Over It\, Underdog\, was finished\, leaving a void in the folk-rock scene that will prove nearly impossible to fill. But Tasjan is committed to carrying on Snider’s unbridled spirit and lifting up underdogs everywhere. \nMADELEINE KELSON \nMadeleine Kelson is a Nashville based Americana artist. She pulls from a rich tradition of Folk\, Country\, and Americana\, challenging its boundaries as a queer artist to represent the modern world. Madeleine spent her high school years in Chicago band\, The Kelson Twins\, playing venues including House of Blues and Thalia Hall\, and landing a top Daytrotter Session with Paste Magazine. She later moved to Music City to pursue a solo career. Inspired by artists like Patty Griffin\, Jason Isbell\, andBrandi Carlile\, her dynamic and down-to-earth storytelling and rich vocals are part of why NPR named her one 10 Nashville artists on the rise.

DESCRIPTION:Step into the Museum’s galleries before the doors open for a quiet and contemplative morning of meditation\, mindful walking\, and reflection. This guided experience invites participants to slow down\, settle the nervous system\, and explore the Museum as a place of sanctuary\, spaciousness\, and renewal. \nThe session will begin with a brief seated meditation\, followed by a walking meditation through selected exhibits. Along the way\, participants will pause with gentle mindfulness prompts designed to support personal reflection\, embodied awareness\, and a deeper connection with the artwork. Rather than offering art historical interpretation\, the experience encourages each participant to notice what arises within them through presence\, stillness\, and mindful seeing. The group will honor noble silence throughout much of the session with occasional opportunities for brief reflection and sharing. No previous meditation experience is needed. \nJoin Joshua on 8/22\, 10/3\, 11/7\, and 12/5. \nJoshua Canter is a mindfulness meditation teacher and the founder of True Nature Travels and Education\, an Asheville-based organization that has offered transformative retreats and educational experiences around the world for more than 20 years. Their forthcoming 12-song LP Reunion\, out August 28 via Free Dirt Records and Forward Music Group\, follows years in near-constant motion\, bringing their folk-without-borders approach to small clubs\, DIY spaces\, and everywhere in between. Winners of the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year for their 2017 debut Count the Wicked\, their music is rooted in long days playing for passing crowds and traveling by foot\, as well as in the deep wells of folk lineage they’ve tapped into across Eastern Canada\, Appalachia\, Ireland\, and beyond. Their sound doesn’t belong to any one place so much as it passes through them\, grounded in the traditions that shaped it. \nThat foundation was built long before stages and studio sessions\, in traveling communities where music functioned as both currency and connection. DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nKING BUFFALO\nKing Buffalo is the trio of vocalist/guitarist Sean McVay\, bassist Dan Reynolds\, and drummer Scott Donaldson. Since forming in 2013\, the self-proclaimed “heavy psych” band has made its name via 4 Full-lengths\, 4EPs\, and tours with Clutch\, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats\, All Them Witches\, The Sword\, and Elder. \nL.A. WITCH\nL.A. Witch have always exuded an aura of effortless cool\, whether it manifested as the Americana noir and laconic back-to-basics rock n’ roll of their self-titled debut or the blistering austere adventurism of their sophomore album Play With Fire. The band—comprised of Sade Sanchez (guitar/vocals)\, Irita Pai (bass)\, and Ellie English (drums)—began as an informal affair\, but the sultry and beguiling reverb-draped songs they created caught on with the public\, moving the project beyond the insular space of the band’s friends and peers in Southern California into the broader world. On their latest album\, DOGGOD\, the trio push their craft beyond their previous creative and geographical confines\, opting to craft the material in Paris\, recording the tracks at Motorbass Studio on the Rue de Martyrs. DOGGOD explores broader swaths of sonic terrain\, employs a greater arsenal of tones\, and probes larger existential and cosmic themes\, all while retaining the band’s signature sense of the forbidden\, the forsaken\, and the foreboding.\nDOGGOD is a way of tackling the universal riddle tangled in the spiritual nature of love and devotion. “I feel like I’m some sort of servant or slave to love\,” says Sanchez. “There’s a willingness to die for love in the process of serving it or suffering for it or in search of it… just in the way a loyal\, devoted servant dog would.” The album title is a palindrome fusing together DOG and GOD—an exaltation of the submissive and a subversion of the divine. It’s a nod to the purity of dogs and an acknowledgement of their unconditional love and protective nature that’s at odds with the various pejoratives associated with the species. “There is this symbolic connection between women and dogs that expresses women’s subordinate position in society\,” Sanchez explains. “And anything that embodies such divine characteristics never deserved to be a word used as an insult.” \nThese conflicted explorations of love and subservience manifest themselves in L.A. Witch’s fusion of their trademark smooth and smoky garage alchemy with a newfound utilization of post-punk’s disciplined reserve and icy instrumentation. Album opener “Icicle” captures the band journeying out of the proto-punk\, psychedelia\, and gritty riffage of the ‘70s into the chorus-drenched guitars and forlorn minimalism of Joy Division and early The Cure. A parallel is drawn between romantic suicide and martyrdom that carries over into the second song\, “Kiss Me Deep.” Here Sanchez describes a love so pure that it transcends time and carries over into multiple lifetimes. It’s a song about passion delivered in the worldly and wounded stoicism of early goth pioneers. From there\, the band segues into the lead single “777\,” a song about devotion to the point of death. A propulsive beat\, a driving distorted riff\, and Sanchez’s ethereal vocals come together to create a song that’s both dire in its fatalism and sensual in its faithful passion.

SUMMARY:Letterpress Demonstration with Jessica White
DESCRIPTION:Visitors are invited to print their own keepsakes with Jessica on her vintage letterpress presses\, each printed on sheets of handmade paper.  \nJessica White grew up in Taiwan and spent her childhood transported by storybooks and fairytales. Following a career in academics as the Professor of Printmaking and Chair of the Art Department at Warren Wilson College\, she is now a studio artist in Asheville\, NC\, where she makes prints\, books\, and crankies. Her work has been exhibited internationally and can be seen in public collections including Yale University\, Stanford University\, Lingnan University Hong Kong\, and the Art Institute of Chicago. She is the co-founder of Ladies of Letterpress\, a member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild\, President of the Wood Engravers Network\, and is the founder and lead organizer for the Asheville Zine Fest and Asheville Crankie Fest. Fancy degrees she holds include a BFA in sculpture from East Carolina University\, an MA and MFA in Printmaking from the University of Iowa\, and a Graduate Certificate in Book Arts from the UIowa Center for the Book. When she’s not getting inky in the studio\, you can find her catching a breeze in her sailboat Sweet Pea.
