DESCRIPTION:Handmade journals are a joy to use for anything and everything\, any day\, every day. Coptic binding is a historical method of constructing a book by sewing folded sections of paper and attaching them to hard covers. Bookbinders use this binding for its beauty with an exposed spine\, functionality with pages that open flat\, and historical roots to perpetuate time-honored traditions.  \nIn this class\, we will create a beautiful blank journal using Paired Needle Coptic Stitch\, which is a specific form of Coptic binding that uses multiple needles and multiple threads. Your journal will have a lovely chain stitch at every sewing station\, and it will be structurally strong and highly functional.  \nAll materials and tools will be provided\, so you can arrive empty handed and relax into the experience. If you already have personal bookbinding tools and find them most comfortable\, please feel welcome to bring along. For the book covers\, I’ll have a variety of decorative papers to choose from including Nepalese Lokta\, Indian cotton\, Japanese Chiyogami. If you prefer your own decorative paper\, please feel welcome to bring along (for space and efficiency\, please pre-cut the paper to 8.5” x 11”).  \nAll skill levels welcome. I look forward to working together and reveling in the stitching goodness!  \nErin studied art at Miami University\, Ohio\, and graduated with an M.A. in Art Education. She moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains and taught at Brevard Middle School earning National Board Certification in Visual Arts. In 2011\, Erin moved into a new career stage\, becoming a professional artist and instructor. She works daily at her home studio near Pisgah National Forest\, and her adventures in the mountains\, lakes\, and rivers become embedded personally into her imagery.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen | Michelangelo: Love and Death
DESCRIPTION:“Michelangelo – Love and Death” offers a cinematic journey through the great chapels and museums of Florence\, Rome and the Vatican\, to the print and drawing rooms of Europe\, to explore Michelangelo’s tempestuous life. The film goes in search of a greater understanding of this charismatic and enigmatic figure\, both through his relationships with his contemporaries and his ongoing artistic legacy. The film invites audiences to intimately examine Michelangelo’s art and artistic process – from the Carrara quarries where Michelangelo sourced his marble\, to the new technology being used to attribute works. The film also offers a rare chance to get up close to the mesmerizing Rothschild Bronzes\, which\, following an extensive research project carried out by Academics in Cambridge in 2015\, were positively attributed to Michelangelo after over a century of debate.

What began as a raw\, multi-instrumental project has sharpened into a lean\, mean\, two-piece wall of sound consisting of Clinton Jacob (guitar/vocals) and Danny Sein (drums). \nJD PINKUS\nJD Pinkus is an American bassist best known for his work with American punk band Butthole Surfers from 1985 to 1994 and since the 2009 reunion. He has also performed with projects including Daddy Longhead\, Honky\, Pure Luck\, and the Melvins.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays from 10-3\nSeptember 2\, 9\, 16\, 23 \nJoin Anne in the studio for an open-format pastel class designed to deepen your skills in this richly expressive medium. Each session begins with a guided morning exercise exploring essential artistic principles and techniques that bring depth\, energy\, and confidence to your work. Bring your own reference materials to create a personalized studio experience. Pastels\, paper\, and sketching and underpainting supplies are provided\, with premium sanded paper available for purchase. You’re also welcome to bring your own pastels and discover which colors will best complement and expand your palette. \nClass size limited to 6 \nARTIST BIO: \nAnne Strutz\, PSA\, IAPS-MC\, is an artist in motion\, pushing boundaries by infusing movement and energy into her paintings. For Anne painting begins with what you cannot see. She poses questions to herself before starting a painting. What is drawing me to this subject? What is the story I want to tell? What am I trying to express in each painting? No single mark is precious. No fear is allowed to enter the process behind the easel. All elements of the composition must work in unity. This process is critical for infusing energy into my work and allows me to respond directly to the piece as it evolves. \nAnne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure\, leading her from fashion and textile designer in NYC\, to teaching and developing art curricula for children in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2013 Anne turned her focus to fine art. After viewing a pastel exhibition at the Noyse Museum of Art in Hammonton N.J. Anne began her journey with the pastel medium. The tangible aspects of the medium\, with the ability to draw\, paint\, layer\, and combine with other mediums has led her on an energetic journey pushing the qualities of pastel in her work. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal multiple times\, Pratique Des Arts and Strokes of Genius and the 2022 and 2024 IAPS Souvenir Book. She has also written multiple articles for the Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. \nAnne is the past president and workshop chair of the Piedmont Pastel Society. In 2019 she participated in the Dueling Demonstration event at the International Association of Pastel Societies convention which occurs every two years. In 2022 and 2024 Anne was invited back to be one of the faculty artists to demonstrate her techniques at the convention. Anne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Pickens\, South Carolina.

His pastels\, with their beautiful pure pigments\, are like no other artist’s. All of his work is known for having a strong sense of light and peace. He currently draws inspiration from the wildlife in Western North Carolina which include visiting bears\, extraordinary birds\, his beautiful wife\, and their four cats.

DESCRIPTION:Enroll now for the next 10-class session of handmade shoemaking. Course teaches each student how to make themselves a pair of custom leather shoes from scratch. The workshop covers all the skills required for making a pair of shoes by hand and is taught through demonstrations and instruction. Some of the skills covered in the course include: measuring\, fitting and modifying lasts for your feet\, pattern making\, skiving\, sewing\, lasting\, soling\, pegging and finishing leather. Each class time lasts four hours.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live performance by Steve Lapointe\, pianist-in-residence in the Windgate Foundation Atrium. \nABOUT THE MUSICIAN\nSteve Lapointe’s nine years of classical piano as a youth grounded him in music theory. Jazz studies while in Ithaca\, New York\, opened his ears to extemporaneous improvisation and the music of Keith Jarrett\, Chick Corea\, Bill Evans\, Michel Petrucciani and the American songbook. Steve served as musical director of the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Fellowship of Vero Beach\, Florida\, and occasionally performed at the UU Asheville congregation.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays from 10-3\nSeptember 2\, 9\, 16\, 23 \nJoin Anne in the studio for an open-format pastel class designed to deepen your skills in this richly expressive medium. Each session begins with a guided morning exercise exploring essential artistic principles and techniques that bring depth\, energy\, and confidence to your work. Bring your own reference materials to create a personalized studio experience. Pastels\, paper\, and sketching and underpainting supplies are provided\, with premium sanded paper available for purchase. You’re also welcome to bring your own pastels and discover which colors will best complement and expand your palette. \nClass size limited to 6 \nARTIST BIO: \nAnne Strutz\, PSA\, IAPS-MC\, is an artist in motion\, pushing boundaries by infusing movement and energy into her paintings. For Anne painting begins with what you cannot see. She poses questions to herself before starting a painting. What is drawing me to this subject? What is the story I want to tell? What am I trying to express in each painting? No single mark is precious. No fear is allowed to enter the process behind the easel. All elements of the composition must work in unity. This process is critical for infusing energy into my work and allows me to respond directly to the piece as it evolves. \nAnne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure\, leading her from fashion and textile designer in NYC\, to teaching and developing art curricula for children in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2013 Anne turned her focus to fine art. After viewing a pastel exhibition at the Noyse Museum of Art in Hammonton N.J. Anne began her journey with the pastel medium. The tangible aspects of the medium\, with the ability to draw\, paint\, layer\, and combine with other mediums has led her on an energetic journey pushing the qualities of pastel in her work. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal multiple times\, Pratique Des Arts and Strokes of Genius and the 2022 and 2024 IAPS Souvenir Book. She has also written multiple articles for the Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. \nAnne is the past president and workshop chair of the Piedmont Pastel Society. In 2019 she participated in the Dueling Demonstration event at the International Association of Pastel Societies convention which occurs every two years. In 2022 and 2024 Anne was invited back to be one of the faculty artists to demonstrate her techniques at the convention. Anne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Pickens\, South Carolina.
