SUMMARY:Queer Girls Literary Reading
DESCRIPTION:The Seventeenth Annual Queer Girls Literary Reading\, a series started in 2009 by Lori Horvitz\, Professor Emeritus of English at UNC Asheville. For the first six years\, the yearly event\, a celebration of Asheville’s queer literary women—including local and regional writers of varying ages\, identities\, races and abilities\, took place in the library at the Phil Mechanic Studios in the River Arts District. Because of the growing interest and need for a larger venue\, The Mothlight\, Rabbit Rabbit\, and Tyger Tyger Gallery have hosted the event in the past. Lockie Hunter\, organizer of the Juniper Bends Reading Series\, joined Horvitz in organizing the event eleven\nyears ago. This year’s lineup includes local and regional writers\, UNCA students\, and community members.

SUMMARY:Nick Shoulders
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nNICK SHOULDERS\nRefugia Blues\, the fifth album from songwriter Nick Shoulders\, is a record of big ideas and small\, intimate moments. Rooted in the acoustic stylings of Southern traditional music\, it finds the Arkansas native turning off his amp and stepping up to a ribbon microphone as a solo performer\, singing in a voice that’s equal parts country croon\, Appalachian yodel\, and high-lonesome field holler. Shoulders’ interpretation of American roots music has always been more progressive and punky than the trucks-and-beers conservatism that passes for modern-day country\, and Refugia Blues offers songs about climate collapse\, radical anthropology\, and generative disruption. It balances the macro with the micro\, too\, making room for love songs and personal topics\, packaging humor alongside heavy insights. At once academic and accessible\, Refugia Blues isn’t just a deep dive into southernness\, but also into Shoulders himself. This is a raw\, resolute version of American country music\, stacked high with songs that go down easy but linger in the minds of those willing to invest the time.

SUMMARY:AJ Lee & Blue Summit w/ The Cody Sisters
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nAJ LEE & BLUE SUMMIT\nAJ Lee & Blue Summit are an award-winning energetic\, charming\, and technically jaw-dropping band quickly rising on the national roots music scene. Based in Santa Cruz\, California\, the group met as teenagers\, picking and jamming together as kids at local music festivals and jams until one day\, they decided they would be a band. \n“Our roots go really deep\,” explains de facto band leader Lee. “We met when we were young kids… We definitely decided to choose each other as a chosen family band later on in life\, but in a lot of ways it was naturally just like that in the beginning.” \n“It was like one of those late at night things\,” she continued. “We were sitting on a trailer at Grass Valley” at the annual Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival held in the Sierra Nevada foothills – “Someone said\, ‘All of us right here\, we’re a band now.’ We kind of didn’t take it seriously\, but we were like\, okay\, we’ll be a band!” \nTHE CODY SISTERS \nThe Cody Sisters band is the very heart of contemporary acoustic Folk and Bluegrass in Colorado\, the United States\, and the UK. Their propulsive instrumental solos and warm harmonies combine to grip the listener. Along with bass player Will Pavilonis\, sisters Megan (guitar\, mandolin\, vocals) and Maddie (guitar\, banjo\, vocals) have forged a new sound that has no equivalent match in the acoustic world today. \nIn May of 2023\, The Cody Sisters released their self-titled EP marking a new beginning for the band. It is their first release since parting ways with their former image of “young girls in a family band” and it portrays a sense of maturity and musical understanding that reveals a new dimension to their artistic expression. They set out to explore new sounds and styles while still holding true to their Bluegrass roots\, and they have done just that. This new music is an invitation to connect\, to feel\, and to journey together through original lyrics and captivating instrumental arrangements. \nWith their brand-new Archipelago\, The Cody Sisters contineu to refine and explore a sound that is original\, exhilarating\, and heartwarming all at the same time. With strong ties to traditional American acoustic music\, they continue to stun their audiences both in the U.S. and abroad.

He has tallied nearly 100 million streams\, received critical acclaim\, and captivated sold-out rooms as a proven headliner. Creatively\, he doesn’t follow a formula. You’re just as likely to encounter a breezy chord progression in one of his tunes as you are to hear a rowdy and boisterous horn section or big screen-size\nstrings. Hitting the road\, he shined on bills with Sam Barber and Rainbow Kitten Surprise as well as Chelsea Cutler and Jeremy Zucker. Ethan’s self-produced 2025 EP\, honey honey honey\, saw him gain further traction with “get by” and “spaceman.” In the EP’s wake\, he canvased the country\, headlining his “I Almost Graduated” Tour and releasing the likes of “fool” and “sweet hunger.” Looking forward\, his artistry remains an unapologetic and unfiltered reflection of who he is. In song and spirit\, Lily is an old soul\, but upon initial meeting she’s kinetic\, ebullient\, lively\, and kind\, quick with a joke and an infectious smile. Lily is a compulsive creator\, she jots down melodies and lyrics as she’s wandering through her days.

SUMMARY:Neal Francis
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nNEAL FRANCIS\nNeal Francis’ music is an intoxicating blend of funk\, soul\, and rock that evokes the glory days of the 60s and 70s but is undeniably fresh. His 2019 debut album\, Changes\, drew lavish applause\, hailed as “the reincarnation of Allen Toussaint” by BBC Radio 6 and lauded by KCRW and more. Francis’s acclaimed 2nd LP\, In Plain Sight\, followed in 2021. Led by top 5 Americana radio favorite\, “Can’t Stop The Rain\,” the album earned international praise from such publications as MOJO\, who wrote\, “Francis digs deep on guileless rock and soul with bold flourishes.” Accolades followed\, including a 2022 Americana Music Awards nomination and Libera Award nominations in 2022 and 2024. Francis has sold out shows globally\, shared the stage with Wilco\, The Meters\, My Morning Jacket and Black Pumas\, appeared at major festivals such as Bonnaroo\, Fuji Rock\, Newport Folk\, Lollapalooza\, and performed on national TV. Francis’s live performance was captured in 2023’s double live album & concert film\, Francis Comes Alive. The 3rd album from Neal Francis\, Return To Zero\, emerged from a kind of visionary fever dream. Equal parts heady and hedonistic\, pensive and euphoric\, the LP echoes his deep-rooted psych-rock sensibilities and lifelong love of classic funk. Amid a relentless touring schedule\, Neal immersed himself in creating a beautiful\, strange\, all-analog entangling of timeless rock & roll and ’70s-era dance music\, merging supremely heavy guitar riffs with lush\, pulsating grooves. \nSAM FRIBUSH ORGAN TRIO

SUMMARY:Dana and Alden: Papa’s Boat Tour
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nDANA AND ALDEN\nJazz duo Dana & Alden have always had a wanderlust\, something they credit to their maternal grandfather. Affectionately known as Papa\, he was the kind of person others naturally gravitate towards. It was a photograph from one of his trips to Asia that inspired the Eugene\, OR duo’s new album Papa’s Boat. In the image Papa is looking out across the horizon and stood next to his boat Sŵn y Môr (Welsh for “Sound of the Sea.”)\n“I think so much of what Alden and I are doing comes from just watching him live his own unique life\,” says Dana. Alden agrees. “His emboldened\, passionate personality gave us permission to be our own selves\, to be unconventional and draw outside of the box.”\nRecorded with Malcolm Catto in London in March 2025\, Papa’s Boat combines all their childhood love and global experience to create an ecstatic sound built on Dana’s saxophone and Alden’s drums. Recorded with the duo’s backing band\, Ebba Dankel (vocals and keys)\, Andrew Mitchell (bass)\, Eli Torgersen (vocals and guitar) and Salim Charvet (sax and synths)\, Papa’s Boat is rooted in jazz but pulling influence from indie\, pop\, rap\, bossa nova\, and beyond. A hypnotic combination of sax and buzzing synths on “Lighthouse” sets the tone for an album that uses water as both a reflective surface and a body to get lost in. Elsewhere there are collaborations with Mei Semones\, Melanie Charles\, and legendary Brazilian songwriter Marcos Valle\, a hero figure to the band who appears on “El Gaucho” and “Friendship Is A Boat.” \nThroughout its runtime Papa’s Boat sails purposefully between memories of the past and visions of a brighter future. It doesn’t just commemorate their Papa as a beloved character\, but shares him with the world.

SUMMARY:Hayes Carll
DESCRIPTION:Hayes Carll isn’t preaching or teaching. He’s not interested in telling the rest of us what to do or think. But he is charting out a personal guide for his life\, quieting the noise\, and sitting with his real voice – the one that’s candid\, consistent\, and often inconvenient. We’re Only Human is Carll’s tenth album. Like his best lyrics\, it is also an understated masterpiece\, an honest snapshot of one man’s confrontation and delight with humanity’s biggest and most intimate questions. Where do we find forgiveness for ourselves and grace for others? How do we hold on to peace of mind and stay present? What can we—and should we––trust? And how can we moor ourselves to\, well\, ourselves\, in the midst of confusing\, trying times? We’re Only Human offers audiences the chance to listen to Carll as he listens to himself. “I’ve lived outside of myself for so long\,” Carll admits. “Distractions\, fear\, anxiety\, insecurity\, and the complexity of being human in this world have so often pulled me away from being present or at peace.” “I feel like there’s been a voice riding shotgun all my life\, pushing me to do better\, but I’ve struggled to listen to it\,” Carll says. “The idea behind this record was to do the personal work I needed to do\, then codify those lessons in song to serve as sort of breadcrumbs to get me back on the trail if\, and inevitably when\, I get lost again.” Carll is more than two decades into a celebrated career. Praise from places such as Pitchfork and the New York Times––the latter of which yoked Carll’s ability to tackle tough issues with wry humor to Bob Dylan––punctuate a resume that includes Americana Music Awards and a Grammy nomination. His songs aren’t safe\, but many of Nashville’s stars have recorded them\, including Kenny Chesney\, Lee Ann Womack\, and Brothers Osborne. As a solo recording artist\, Carll has long-since established himself as one of Americana’s most-played––and most loved––voices. His warm but crackling vocals\, wit\, and heart dance through wordplay that’s always clever\, and never too precious. Through it all\, whenever Carll points a finger\, it’s most often at himself. As We’re Only Human collects moments of Carll figuring out how to be with himself\, the songs feel forthright\, hopeful\, and timely. In today’s onslaught of instant gratification\, rage-baiting headlines\, glorified intolerance\, and falling empathy\, the record is a startling outlier: an artist’s raw\, real-life effort to live well—both with himself and others. Carll embraces private epiphanies\, and shares them with the world\, allowing them to unfold for all to see and share.

SUMMARY:APLR Presents: Min Xiao-Fen & Julian Kytasty - Boundless
DESCRIPTION:APLR Presents: Min Xiao-Fen & Julian Kytasty – Boundless \nThursday\, November 5th\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6PM || Show 7PM \nMin Xiao-Fen & Julian Kytasty: Boundless \n“Boundless\, a groundbreaking collaboration between two visionary artists: Chinese pipa soloist and composer Min Xiao-Fen and Ukrainian bandurist and composer Julian Kytasty. Both classically trained and shaped by their work with avant-garde icon Derek Bailey\, Min and Kytasty bridge centuries-old traditions with bold contemporary expression. \nMin’s work\, “Xi Xi\, Cuo Cuo (Wash and Rub)\,” draws inspiration from the overlooked history of Chinese immigrants in the Mississippi Delta. “They lived there for over a century\,” she explains. “In the segregated South\, they ran grocery stores and laundries that served both Black and white communities. My music reflects how they quietly bridged a divided world.” \nKytasty’s “Travel Music” features a rare bandura with a remarkable past. “It was crafted by Iosyp Shizhny\, a pioneering performer who fled the USSR via Manchuria and settled in Shanghai\,” Julian says. “He escaped China in 1948 and brought the instrument to Buenos Aires. I discovered it in 1987\, brought it to New York – and it’s still going strong. I can’t wait to play it with Min.” \nFor Min\, the performance also echoes a poignant memory: performing in Kyiv in 1988 as part of a Chinese cultural exchange. “Through this music\, we continue that spirit of connection—and send a prayer for peace in Ukraine and around the world.” \nBoundless is more than a title – it’s a journey across time\, borders\, and imagination. Don’t miss this unforgettable evening of fearless collaboration and transcendent sound. \nAll-ages
