SUMMARY:MatchStrike Youth Arts Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Ten years ago\, the MatchStrike Youth Arts Showcase brought together dozens of young artists to showcase local talent in a hybrid gallery-concert style event. Many of the artists featured then have gone on to build successful careers for themselves in the arts.\nOn Wednesday\, March 4th\, MatchStrike will\, for the first time since 2016\, once again showcase 20 local young artists. The event will feature spoken word poets\, indie singer/songwriters\, studio artists\, filmmakers\, and photographers from the Asheville area.\n“I can’t believe it’s been a decade since MatchStrike and that first showcase brought an unmatched talent into one space\,” said Heidi Freeman\, a teacher at Asheville High School who helped organize the original event. “What made that group great was the way they collaborated. The young artists in Asheville today are just as talented and events like this help them find an audience and a space to create together.”\nAt 6:30 p.m.\, doors will open with a gallery of art exhibits from six student artists. At 7:00\, the event will transition into a concert that will range from spoken word poetry to alternative rock music — and artists from different groups and genres will collaborate for performances within the show.\n“I’ve been playing guitar since I was 11 and singing since I was little\,” said Harper Klapheke\, one of the featured artists. “I hope to continue to play music in the future…and would really love to be able to share my music and perform.”\nAlong with showcasing their talents at the event\, MatchStrike hopes to help artists create an audience for their works and establish themselves as professionals.\nArtists who participate in the event will each be setting a project goal. Tickets must be reserved but are free; instead of an admission price\, we are asking audience members to donate directly to artists toward this project goal.\n“I’m currently writing and recording my debut album\, which will be your go-to for nighttime drives and melancholy moods\,” said self-taught guitarist Paul Danko. “My project goal is to complete my album in my home studio.”\nArtists donation links will be available and some will be selling art at the event.\nDoors open at 6:30 on Wednesday\, March 4th and performances begin at 7:00 in the Arts Theater at Asheville High School. Theater space is limited and tickets should be reserved at https://ashevillehstheatre.ludus.com/200520374.

SUMMARY:The Fantastic Ekphrastic Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Four Week Class — Wednesdays\, March 4-25\, 6-8 p.m.
ONLINE delivered via ZOOM
Facilitated by Alli Marshall (I&A Certified)\nSliding Scale Registration | $160 / $200 / $240 \nEkphrastic art is work made in response to another piece of artwork. It can be a poem jump-started by a painting\, a song inspired by a sculpture or — to paraphrase a cliche — a dance about architecture. In this class\, we’ll focus on flash fiction\, flash essay\, and prose poetry as our mediums of expression.

\nWe’ll begin with a discussion of ekphrastic art and examples of it from our own bodies of work (it’s likely we’ve all made ekphrastic art\, even if unintentionally). We’ll also talk about ekphrastic art as a means of collaboration with a knowing or unknowing fellow artist. And we’ll work on outlining and/or writing flash fiction pieces in response to several artistic works of various mediums.

\nFrom there\, we’ll move on to creating short pieces that build off our ekphrastic explorations. Through in-class writing prompts\, group writing exercises\, and motivating assignments\, we’ll develop our ekphrastic works into completed pieces.

SUMMARY:AyurPrana Listening Room Presents: Experimental Meditation Club with Kelly Kelbel and Tony Rolando
DESCRIPTION:Make Noise + APLR Present: Experimental Meditation Club with Kelly Kelbel and Tony Rolando \nTuesday\, March 3rd\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 7:00 PM || Event 7:30 PM \nExperimental Meditation Club with Kelly Kelbel and Tony Rolando \nTuesdays in September\, we’ll convene as the Experimental Meditation Club. \nWe’ll provide partially guided meditations with sonic accompaniment. Think breaths to let go of tension\, sonic ambiance\, a bit of grief work\, heavy drones\, and psychedelic introspection (without any drugs). \nThe event begins at 7:30 sharp\, so please be prompt to avoid disruption. \nYou are invited to all four sessions\, but don’t have to come to all of them. The first one will provide some more context for meditation\, but if you can’t make it\, still come to what you can\, and you’ll figure it out along the way. The best way to meditate is just to do it. That’s it! \nWhile everyone is welcome\, this will be tailored to people who: \n*are new to meditation & may be skeptical or rekindling a practice \n*like the company of sonic vibrations \n*are open to trying this experiment & okay with it being messy \n*want to test their own rigidity and capacity for expansion \n*like the idea of democratizing meditation \nHere’s a general idea of what will happen: \nEach night will include some context\, a guided meditation around the theme\, a short conversation (no one is required to talk\, so introverts don’t run away\, please)\, and a longer meditation using only sound. \nKelly Kelbel \nKelly Kelbel meditates every morning in bed\, mostly using the Happier App. She started meditating shortly after she started chemotherapy out of desperation to find relief from her fear. It worked! Chemo Sessions is a project she created to offer support to folks going through treatment through a letter\, music\, tips from pals\, and guided meditations. She is also a writer and co-owns a synthesizer company\, Make Noise\, in West Asheville. Previously\, she served as a legal advocate for survivors of sexual violence in Chicago and youth being tried as adults in New York City. She was a founding teacher of the School for Democracy and Leadership in Brooklyn\, and directed the Rise Project at Warren Wilson College. \nwww.kellykelbel.com \nTony Rolando \nTony Rolando meditates irregularly\, but notices a benefit every time he does a sit. He often uses the quiet. He is a self-taught electronic musical instrument designer who got started by obsessively reading Amateur Radio Relay League books at the public library\, building electronics for artists\, such as the light controlled remixer for Simon Lee’s “Bus Obscura” which debuted at the Whitney Biennial\, working for Moog Music\, and always playing music. Tony has recently released music with Important Records and the Asheville based Ceremony of Seasons. He is the founder\, lead designer\, and co-owner of Make Noise. \nhttps://tonyrolando.bandcamp.com/ \nwww.makenoisemusic.com
