SUMMARY:VIRTUAL BOOK TALK: Fritz Horstman – Interacting with Color
DESCRIPTION:BOOK TALK: Fritz Horstman – Interacting with Color\nTuesday\, July 9\, 2024\, 1pm EST\nStreaming to Vimeo + Facebook \nBMCM+AC presents a virtual book talk with Fritz Horstman\, education director at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation\, exploring his new publication Interacting with Color: A Practical Guide to Josef Albers’s Color Experiments. \nAbout the Book: \nThe essence of Josef Albers’s Interaction of Color in a format that engages learners of all ages and levels and encourages a hands-on approach \nInteraction of Color is often presented as an overarching theory of color\, but it is actually a method of learning how to better see and understand color—many of the color exercises illustrated in Interaction of Color were devised by Albers’s students: cutting and pasting\, looking\, pondering\, and learning. This workbook companion is a teaching tool designed to enable readers to engage in the kinds of tactile creativity and exploration that characterized Albers’s own classroom. \nFocusing on eight of the most important lessons in Interaction of Color\, this book invites readers to learn by doing\, using only simple materials. Core instructions for each exercise are enhanced by additional tips\, references to Albers’s original text and illustrations\, and stories about how Albers presented the ideas in class. The book and exercises are sufficiently nuanced to challenge and inspire seasoned artists\, designers\, and educators while also being readily accessible to younger readers and less-experienced practitioners. \nFritz Horstman is a curator\, educator\, and artist based in Bethany\, Connecticut where he is Education Director at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. He has curated exhibitions in Italy\, Ireland\, Croatia\, Norway\, and the United States\, including Anni Albers: In Thread and On Paper\, which is currently on view at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin\, TX. He has lectured and given workshops at Yale University\, Harvard University\, l’École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris\, Lebanese American University in Beirut\, The Royal Academy of Art in London\, and many other institutions. Recent exhibitions of his sculptures\, installations\, prints and drawings have been shown across Europe and the US\, with upcoming solo shows at the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain\, Connecticut; Municipal Bonds in San Francisco; and Planthouse Gallery in Manhattan.

SUMMARY:Apply to the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival

Festival dates are March 16-23\, 2025\, with most paid performances taking place between Thursday\, March 20 to Sunday\, March 23. There is no fee to apply. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival provides artists with opportunities to explore the edges of their work\, to collaborate across genres and to bring new and innovative performances to culturally adventurous audiences. Our continual goal is to curate experiences that expand the minds and hearts of our audiences and to be inclusive of artists who work within a myriad of genres\, styles\, and forms to create truly unique and original pieces in our community. \nWe accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length\, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length\, your piece may be grouped with another show\, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public\, and artists receive a stipend for their performance\, rather than relying on door sales. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival is a juried festival.\nWe carefully review each and every submission. Applicants must show their work (or fully present their concept) at a short virtual or in-person adjudication session in October or November. You will be notified of your acceptance status in November or December.

SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING: Deep Listening: The Story of Pauline Oliveros
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Deep Listening\, a new documentary film project on the life and work of American icon Pauline Oliveros. \nPauline Oliveros (1932-2016) composer\, performer\, humanitarian\, was an important pioneer in American Music. Acclaimed internationally\, for six decades she explored sound-forging new ground for herself and others. Through improvisation\, electronic music\, ritual\, teaching and meditation she created a body of work with such a breadth of vision that it profoundly effects those who experience it and eludes many who try to write about it. \nOliveros was honored with many awards\, including four honorary doctorates\, grants and concerts internationally. Whether performing at the John F. Kennedy Centre in Washington DC\, in an underground Cistern\, or in the studios of a West German radio station\, Oliveros’ commitment to interaction with the moment was unchanged. Through Deep Listening Pieces and earlier Sonic Meditations\, Oliveros introduced the concept of incorporating all environmental sounds into musical performance. She spoke of this as “playing the space\,” playing with whatever space she performed in as another instrument. As she said\, “Listening to space changes the space\, and changing the space changes listening.” In playing this way\, she applied focused concentration\, skilled musicianship\, and strong improvisational skills\, all of which were hallmarks of her performances. \nShe built a loyal following through her extensive teaching\, concerts\, recordings\, publications\, and musical compositions that she wrote for soloists and ensembles in music\, dance\, theater\, and inter-arts companies. She also provided leadership within the music community by acting in an advisory capacity for organizations such as The National Endowment for the Arts\, New York State Council for the Arts\, and many private foundations. She served as Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Darius Milhaud Composer in Residence at Mills College. \nOliveros was vocal about representing the needs of individual artists\, about the need for diversity and experimentation in the arts and promoting cooperation and good will among people. She founded the Deep Listening Institute\, formerly Pauline Oliveros Foundation\, and now Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. \n“Deep Listening is listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what you are doing. Such intense listening includes the sounds of daily life\, of nature\, or one’s own thoughts as well as musical sounds. Deep Listening represents a heightened state of awareness and connects to all that there is. As a composer I make my music through Deep Listening.”\n– Pauline Oliveros

SUMMARY:Suzie Brown + Scot Sax
DESCRIPTION:Suzie Brown and Scot Sax return to the Citizen Vinyl stage on July 11. 7 p.m. show\, 6 p.m. doors. $18 in advance / $22 at the door. \nA 1970s-inspired folk-pop songwriter\, Suzie Brown has chased her unique muse for a decade\, making modern-day roots music that nods to the soul singers\, heartland rockers\, and blues artists who came before her. Gluing the sound together is the unforced voice and honest\, autobiographical songwriting of a Renaissance woman who’s not only an acclaimed musician\, but also a part-time cardiologist and full-time mother. \nScot Sax’s multifaceted career started with a bang when his song “I Walked” became a radio hit with his band Wanderlust (RCA) in ’95. It was the No. 1 most requested song on rock stations across the country. That year ended with Wanderlust opening for The Who. After signing a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music in Los Angeles\, Sax went on to write and perform “I Am The Summertime” for the film American Pie (awarded a Gold Record) and form indie-darlings FEEL (Curb Records). In 2005\, he was a co-writer of the Grammy-winning Faith Hill/Tim McGraw duet “Like We Never Loved At All.” Upon hearing Sax’s song “What Gets In The Way\,” Robert Plant\, Alison Krauss\, and T-Bone Burnett asked him and singer Sharon Little to be their opening act for their Raising Sand Tour in 2007. Sax worked with Don Was in 2009 on Little’s second album. From there\, Sax went on to dive into another passion of his: film. He released the documentary Platinum Rush\, starring Lisa Loeb and Oliver Wood\, created videos for Lucinda Williams’ Car Wheels On A Gravel Road 20th Anniversary Tour\, and directed award-winning films Playback Is A Bitch and This Is Major\, all the while continuing to release new music. Since 2023\, Scot’s comedy and music TV show “JoinWithVideo” has been seen on CBS in Nashville and has become an East Nashville staple.

SUMMARY:Lakisha Blount: When We See Us
DESCRIPTION:Tyger Tyger Gallery is delighted to announce its upcoming solo exhibition\, When We See Us\, featuring the bright\, bold and vibrant artwork of local artist Lakisha Blount. Born in the historic Black community of Texana\, North Carolina\, Blount honors the essence of her experiences and generational stories of Black mountain life in Appalachia through her figurative oil paintings. Many of the artist’s subjects are representative of her deep sense of memory and connection to real people in her life\, like the matriarchs of her family. Some works are of no particular person – instead\, Blount captures her own version of Black mountain men. Narrative content is woven throughout her work\, with subjects that harken moments of daily life such as Sunday Tag\, depicting two little girls playing tag after church\, or Fontana Rising\, a vision of the significant creation and destruction of a town through a dream lens. \nDense with skins of oil paint built up to create gritty ridges and marks\, the artist’s canvases speak through layers of their own history as she shape-shifts her subjects and their environments\, often working deep into the night. Pointing to a work in progress featuring a portrait in silhouette during a recent studio visit with Mira Gerard\, owner and director of Tyger Tyger Gallery\, Blount explained: “She’s a self-portrait– for now\, at least. That may change as I work on her more.” She is working within the long tradition of painters whose work is encountered as it is made\, through a process that involves paying careful attention to what the painting is telling her rather than asserting directorial control. \nLakisha Blount’s work imagines\, positions\, memorializes\, and asserts African diasporic experiences by highlighting and celebrating the voices and narratives of Black and brown individuals as they see themselves. In the artist’s own words\, “I want to create a space where Black stories are not just told\, but celebrated and preserved. It’s about creating visibility\, fostering a sense of belonging\, and ensuring that our narratives are seen and valued in the world.” \nThe opening reception for When We See Us will be held on the evening of July 12th\, 2024 from 6-8 pm. The artist\, Lakisha Blount\, will be in attendance\, as well as the curator of the exhibition\, Tyger Tyger owner and artist Mira Gerard. Light refreshments will be served. A subsequent artist talk at the gallery will be held on Thursday\, August 8th\, from 6-8pm\, while the exhibition is on view. \nContact or follow Tyger Tyger Gallery for more information on upcoming exhibitions and events.

SUMMARY:Katie Oates with Owen Walsh | Sundays on the River Series
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an outdoor concert on the French Broad River by Katie Oates and special guest Owen Walsh! \nKatie Oates knows how to sing. She’s been singing for as long as she can remember. The daughter of a preacher\, she belted hymns from her crib as a toddler to wake up her parents. Over the years she has trained with many vocal coaches and songwriting mentors and sung a wide variety of music genres (classical\, folk\, music theatre\, blues\, jazz\, country\, spirituals/sacred) in diverse venues: churches\, homeless shelters\, theatres of all sizes\, bars\, festivals\, conferences\, house concerts and listening rooms. But finding her own voice—that’s another story.   \nIn Katie’s 5th album (Edge of a Hurricane\, 2024)\, she plumbed the depths of human emotion in her songwriting. She confesses: “Some songs are quite different from what people expect to hear from me—or any folk singer. I travel through anger\, humor\, despair\, hope\, sass\, sincerity and everything in between. Even the most hopeful ballads on the album all emerge from a hard-fought battle with despair. Because in the end I think it’s as simple as a choice we each have to make between darkness and light. Hate seems so powerful\, but all hate can do is destroy; only love can create something new. So I choose love. I hope you will\, too. And maybe our small little acts will make a difference.” \nOwen Walsh has been telling stories and performing music his entire life. Born and raised on the banks of the Lackawaxen River in Honesdale\, Pennsylvania—a small\, historic coal-mining town that spawned the American railroad—Owen grew up surrounded by relics of 19th Century American life and imagery ripe for musical exploitation. \nHis years of formal violin and classical guitar training\, zest for informal improvisation\, and love of folk-lore storytelling combine to create a unique blend of musical expression. His recently released debut album\, On My Way\, has been met with critical acclaim and charted at #9 on Folk Radio in the second month of its release.\nOwen now lives in Asheville\, NC where he performs music regularly\, writes for various publications and constructs crosswords in his spare time.
