SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen | Michelangelo: Love and Death
DESCRIPTION:“Michelangelo – Love and Death” offers a cinematic journey through the great chapels and museums of Florence\, Rome and the Vatican\, to the print and drawing rooms of Europe\, to explore Michelangelo’s tempestuous life. The film goes in search of a greater understanding of this charismatic and enigmatic figure\, both through his relationships with his contemporaries and his ongoing artistic legacy. The film invites audiences to intimately examine Michelangelo’s art and artistic process – from the Carrara quarries where Michelangelo sourced his marble\, to the new technology being used to attribute works. The film also offers a rare chance to get up close to the mesmerizing Rothschild Bronzes\, which\, following an extensive research project carried out by Academics in Cambridge in 2015\, were positively attributed to Michelangelo after over a century of debate.

SUMMARY:mr. phylzzz + JD Pinkus
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nMR. PHYLZZZ \nFormed in late 2015\, mr.phylzzz (pronounced mr. flyzzz) has spent the last decade mutating\, evolving\, and cementing their reputation as one of the most blistering\, uncompromising forces in modern noise rock. What began as a raw\, multi-instrumental project has sharpened into a lean\, mean\, two-piece wall of sound consisting of Clinton Jacob (guitar/vocals) and Danny Sein (drums). Now anchored in the gritty musical landscape of Chicago\, the duo crafts a chaotic\, high-velocity sonic assault that balances punishing\, heavy riffs with an undeniable knack for twisted\, melodic hooks. \nThe band’s rapid\, jagged trajectory quickly caught the ear of Tom Hazelmyer\, founder of the legendary underground imprint Amphetamine Reptile Records (AmRep). A badge of honor for any band pushing the boundaries of aggressive music\, mr.phylzzz made their label debut on the prestigious Dope Guns ’N Fucking in the Streets Vol. 14 compilation. They followed that up with their first proper full-length album\, Penitent Curtis\, in 2019—a record that laid the groundwork for their signature blend of cranked amps\, driving percussion\, and volatile vocal delivery. \nWhen the pandemic brought the world to a standstill\, the project underwent a metamorphosis. Operating in isolation\, Jacob continued to write at a feverish pace. As restrictions lifted\, a relocation to Chicago sparked a powerful new chemistry with the addition of drummer Danny Sein. The resulting synergy produced 2022’s Cancel Culture Club\, a critically acclaimed record that showcased a tighter\, more furious version of the band. The album drew well-deserved attention from noise rock royalty\, featuring guest appearances from the Melvins’ King Buzzo and Kevin Rutmanis. \nJD PINKUS \nJD Pinkus is an American bassist best known for his work with American punk band Butthole Surfers from1985 to 1994 and since the 2009 reunion. In 1990\, he and Butthole Surfers’ lead vocalist Gibby Haynes released Digital Dump\, the only album from their psychedelic house music side project The Jackofficers. Upon leaving Butthole Surfers\, Pinkus worked full-time with the Austin trio Daddy Longhead\, which he had assembled during his waning months in the band\, and which included longtime Atlanta associate Jimbo Young on guitar and Rey Washam on drums. Daddy Longhead retired after 10 years\, leaving Pinkus free to explore other projects including Skinny Leonard and Areola 51. Pinkus played with Helios Creed on his albums NUGG The Transport [1996] and Activated Condition [1998]\, and has also collaborated with Bad Livers frontman Danny Barnes several times in a live setting. JD Pinkus then co-founded the band Honky who went on to record five albums and are still currently active. Pinkus also performs with Pure Luck\,who released a self-titled release in 2017 on Heavy Feather Records. He leaves his bass to play Banjo and Guitar in this project. On their 30th anniversary tour in 2013\, Pinkus joined the Melvins in place of Jared Warren (on paternity leave) as well as performing with the opening Honky. He subsequently joined the Melvins full-time\, touring with them in 2014 in support of the album Hold It In\, which also featured Butthole Surfers founder Paul Leary\, and again in 2015.

SUMMARY:GUIDED OPEN STUDIO - SEPTEMBER EDITION - WITH ANNE STRUTZ\, PSA\, IAPS-MC
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays from 10-3\nSeptember 2\, 9\, 16\, 23 \nJoin Anne in the studio for an open-format pastel class designed to deepen your skills in this richly expressive medium. Each session begins with a guided morning exercise exploring essential artistic principles and techniques that bring depth\, energy\, and confidence to your work. Bring your own reference materials to create a personalized studio experience. Pastels\, paper\, and sketching and underpainting supplies are provided\, with premium sanded paper available for purchase. You’re also welcome to bring your own pastels and discover which colors will best complement and expand your palette. \nClass size limited to 6 \nARTIST BIO: \nAnne Strutz\, PSA\, IAPS-MC\, is an artist in motion\, pushing boundaries by infusing movement and energy into her paintings. For Anne painting begins with what you cannot see. She poses questions to herself before starting a painting. What is drawing me to this subject? What is the story I want to tell? What am I trying to express in each painting? No single mark is precious. No fear is allowed to enter the process behind the easel. All elements of the composition must work in unity. This process is critical for infusing energy into my work and allows me to respond directly to the piece as it evolves. \nAnne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure\, leading her from fashion and textile designer in NYC\, to teaching and developing art curricula for children in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2013 Anne turned her focus to fine art. After viewing a pastel exhibition at the Noyse Museum of Art in Hammonton N.J. Anne began her journey with the pastel medium. The tangible aspects of the medium\, with the ability to draw\, paint\, layer\, and combine with other mediums has led her on an energetic journey pushing the qualities of pastel in her work. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal multiple times\, Pratique Des Arts and Strokes of Genius and the 2022 and 2024 IAPS Souvenir Book. She has also written multiple articles for the Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. \nAnne is the past president and workshop chair of the Piedmont Pastel Society. In 2019 she participated in the Dueling Demonstration event at the International Association of Pastel Societies convention which occurs every two years. In 2022 and 2024 Anne was invited back to be one of the faculty artists to demonstrate her techniques at the convention. Anne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Pickens\, South Carolina.

SUMMARY:Pierre Bensusan
DESCRIPTION:About\nAPLR Presents: Pierre Bensusan \nWednesday\, September 16th\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6PM || Event 7PM \nPierre Bensusan \n“It’s like the guitar has been given free rein to play itself!” \nFrench acoustic guitar virtuoso\, vocalist\, and composer Pierre Bensusan\, surnamed “Mister DADGAD\,” has taken his unique sound to all corners of the globe. \nWinner of the Independent Music Award for his triple live album Encore\, voted Best World Music Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine readers’ poll\, and winner of the Rose d’Or at the Montreux Festival for his debut album\, Pierre is recognized as one of the greatest guitar players of the 21st century. \nWhen Michael Hedges titled one of his compositions “Bensusan\,” you know that the inspiration behind it must be special\, and Pierre Bensusan certainly is. Guitarists from Leo Kottke to Larry Coryell\, Tuck Andress\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Mark Knopfler\, Andrew York\, Andy Timmons\, Pat Metheny\, and Steve Lukather have sung his praises\, and Steve Vai released three Bensusan albums on his label Favored Nations. And it’s not just guitarists who are inspired by Pierre’s music\, as a recent studio collaboration with him on Donny Osmond’s album Start Again demonstrates. \nIf World Music means the fusion of traditional\, contemporary\, jazz\, classical\, and pop music\, then Bensusan is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. A pianist in his beginnings and later self-taught on the guitar\, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarists and composers for the instrument. Also called “The Prince of DADGAD\,” his story is far from trivial\, and it is on stage that this artist has earned his stripes\, including the Rose d’Or of the Montreux Festival and being elected Best Guitarist of World Music by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine. His triple album Encore won the Grand Prix at the Independent Music Awards in the Best Live Album category. Since his first performances in 1974 in France\, the guitarist has sold half a million albums and given thousands of concerts around the globe\, both solo and through numerous collaborations. \nPierre Bensusan is an adventurer of unusual lands. His music is an intimate and orchestral hymn\, a solo crossing on a multi-shell Lowden guitar subjected to the natural elements\, with sound molecules and finger pulp on an ebony fingerboard for open tuning—a unique and transparent technique under the fingers of an adventurous pilgrim. \n“For me\, so total is his mastery of the solo instrument\, his dazzling harmony\, his many innovations\, and his deft command of counterpoint\, the jazz idiom\, folk expression\, and all genres between and beyond\, an entire history unfolds as Pierre Bensusan plays. But really\, the emotional depth—and this is where true artistry often likes to live—of many of his songs and compositions is all\, well\, breathtaking. With only his steel-string acoustic guitar—and sometimes his rich\, affecting voice—Mr. Bensusan can disassemble your heart and hand it back to you restored and renewed as he did to mine tonight. A true giant.” \nJames Volpe Rotondi – Editor at Guitar Player Magazine \n“I’ve seen Alfred Brendel\, Itzhak Perlman\, Daniel Barenboim\, Lynn Harrell\, Nureyev\, Placido Domingo\, etc.\, etc.\, perform magnificently. Tonight\, in Atlanta\, in the last half of the second set\, Pierre Bensusan went a quantum beyond the warm\, compelling\, appealing\, extremely accomplished guitarist whose recordings and performances I’ve eagerly sought for over 30 years. He’s achieved the sublime—decades of technique\, creativity\, intuition\, passion\, and intensity crashed together—a man transformed\, singular\, stunning. I have so seldom had the privilege and pure animal joy of experiencing this caliber of artistry.” Rain Crow – A fan \nBIOGRAPHIC ELEMENTS \n• Born in October 1957 in Oran (Algeria) \n• Moved to metropolitan France\, in the western suburbs of Paris\, in 1962 \n• Studied piano from age 6 with Madame Rosso \n• Taught himself guitar at age 11 \n• Left school at 16 \n• Recorded his first album\, Près de Paris\, at 17 and won the Grand Prix/Rose d’Or at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland \n• Has released 16 albums\, the most recent being Azwan \n• A leading figure in the world of open-tuned guitar music \n• Has given approximately 4\,000 concerts worldwide and sold more than 500\,000 albums since 1975 \n• Has lived in Oran\, Suresnes\, Nice\, Paris\, and spent part of every year in the United States; currently resides in the French countryside\, about an hour from Paris \nCOLLABORATIONS: Donny Osmond\, Jacques Higelin\, Yoko Kanno & Cowboy Bebop\, Didier Malherbe (Gong)\, Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater)\, Bobby Thomas Jr. (Weather Report)\, Nana Vasconcelos\, International Guitar Night (USA)\, Bill Keith\, Larry Coryell\, Gingua\, Andrew York\, Gene Parsons (The Byrds)\, and many more. \nAll ages\nEnding Time is an estimate\nTickets only sold through DICE. SUMMARY:APLR Presents: EVENING SHOW: Mdou Moctar
DESCRIPTION:APLR Presents: EVENING SHOW: Mdou Moctar \nFriday\, September 18th\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 7PM || Event 8PM \nMdou Moctar \nThere is a beauty in listening to music made in the spirit of energetic transformation. When the sounds transform the air and the listener. This record transports the listener into the heart of the music of Mdou Moctar. The blending of intention and motivation creates a burst of sound that embraces and shakes and invites one to dance! It invites one to breathe. It invites one to be in solidarity with the music. It invites one to be in touch with the human condition. What does it mean to be free in these times? Can the world be liberated from the colonial mindstate that has caused such harm and mistrust? Can we mourn our losses yet build anew to form something more astounding\, more fantastic? Funeral For Justice says we can. \nA sound that carries weight makes an impact. A sound that carries time transcends time. We are not only listening to music but we are living through it. We are living with it. We are living in it. The artist sees history and makes poetry from it for the present. Mdou Moctar’s Funeral For Justice requests your presence. Show up open to the celebration of life\, loved as it should be loved. Experience the exaltation and exuberance. The words speak of ascension\, awareness\, sorrow\, apathy\, knowing\, and growth. The guitars speak of power\, energy\, jubilation\, transcendency\, immediacy\, and tradition. The drums and percussion mark the pulse of now as well as a timeless dance that involves us all\, as it did those that came before us. The wires that carry the message feel alive with fire and purpose\, explosive with possibility. This “funeral” is an acknowledgment. This “funeral” is abundant. This “funeral” overflows into the street filled with dance. This “funeral” stretches late into the night\, kicking up the dirt\, with the hum of a generator\, an ever present member of the rhythm section. This “funeral” is a clarion call for reason and a belief that change is possible. \nSo join Mdou Moctar in this funeral for justice\, knowing rebirth is possible. A new justice is possible. With your voice\, your heart\, your dance\, your stomp\, a new justice is born. Mdou Moctar welcomes you with joy and open arms. Be here. Feel here and do\, alongside this music. Don’t stand alone\, join with others and do. Fight for liberation. Stand against oppression\, alongside this music and do! \nAll ages
