SUMMARY:The Feast of St. John: Celebrating Henderson County
DESCRIPTION:FLAT ROCK\, N.C. Once again The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness celebrates its patron saint with the Feast of St. John the Baptist. In 2021\, the historic church extended the festivities outside the parish to the broader community and since then continues the tradition. \nThe fourth annual celebration will be held from 5 – 8 p.m. on Sunday\, June 30\, 2024 at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse\, located behind Little Rainbow Row at 2724 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock. The rain location is set for the Parish Hall of St. John in the Wilderness at 1905 Greenville Highway. \nAll are welcome to join the festivities at the family-friendly celebration featuring food\, fellowship and live music with the return of North Carolina’s Chatham Rabbits. Music begins at 6pm but guests should arrive early to get their food order in and find a seat. Yard games will be offered for children. Barbecue and other family-favorite foods and beverages will be available for purchase at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse. Seating at the picturesque outdoor courtyard is limited\, so guests are encouraged to bring portable chairs. \nProceeds from the Feast will benefit the Community Food Pantry in Edneyville. Admission is free but donations are encouraged from attendees. Chatham Rabbits and St. John in the Wilderness are teaming up to match donations up to $2\,000. \n“The Feast of St. John has become a wonderful way to celebrate Flat Rock and the surrounding community each year. Our parishioners\, like many of you\, feel incredibly fortunate to live in this beautiful place\,” said Reverend Josh Stephens\, Rector. “We also are fortunate to have each other as neighbors and friends so we hope you will join us to celebrate our many blessings. This year\, we are especially pleased that monetary donations at the concert will benefit the Edneyville Community Food Pantry\, which is an amazing organization serving hundreds of food insecure people in Henderson County each month.” \nThe Feast of St. John is made possible by the Endowment of St. John in the Wilderness and the generosity of its parishioners. SUMMARY:SCYTHIAN at The Grey Eagle
DESCRIPTION:Washington DC-based Scythian (sith-ee-yin) began over 12 years ago as a bunch of college buddies playing Celtic music in the streets and has grown to be a headliner on the US Celtic Festival Circuit as well as a name in the Bluegrass/Americana Festival Circuit. They found that their brand of high-energy folk music found a resonance that led The Washington Post to state: “Scythian’s enthusiasm is contagious\, and shows seem to end with everyone dancing\, jumping around or hoisting glasses.” \nFor over 12 years they have found success as an independent band and have played over 1\,300 shows all over the united states\, Europe\, Canada and as far aways as Australia. See them live in Asheville’s longest-running music venue.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL BOOK TALK: Fritz Horstman – Interacting with Color
DESCRIPTION:BOOK TALK: Fritz Horstman – Interacting with Color\nTuesday\, July 9\, 2024\, 1pm EST\nStreaming to Vimeo + Facebook \nBMCM+AC presents a virtual book talk with Fritz Horstman\, education director at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation\, exploring his new publication Interacting with Color: A Practical Guide to Josef Albers’s Color Experiments. \nAbout the Book: \nThe essence of Josef Albers’s Interaction of Color in a format that engages learners of all ages and levels and encourages a hands-on approach \nInteraction of Color is often presented as an overarching theory of color\, but it is actually a method of learning how to better see and understand color—many of the color exercises illustrated in Interaction of Color were devised by Albers’s students: cutting and pasting\, looking\, pondering\, and learning. This workbook companion is a teaching tool designed to enable readers to engage in the kinds of tactile creativity and exploration that characterized Albers’s own classroom. \nFocusing on eight of the most important lessons in Interaction of Color\, this book invites readers to learn by doing\, using only simple materials. Core instructions for each exercise are enhanced by additional tips\, references to Albers’s original text and illustrations\, and stories about how Albers presented the ideas in class. The book and exercises are sufficiently nuanced to challenge and inspire seasoned artists\, designers\, and educators while also being readily accessible to younger readers and less-experienced practitioners. \nFritz Horstman is a curator\, educator\, and artist based in Bethany\, Connecticut where he is Education Director at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. He has curated exhibitions in Italy\, Ireland\, Croatia\, Norway\, and the United States\, including Anni Albers: In Thread and On Paper\, which is currently on view at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin\, TX. He has lectured and given workshops at Yale University\, Harvard University\, l’École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris\, Lebanese American University in Beirut\, The Royal Academy of Art in London\, and many other institutions. Recent exhibitions of his sculptures\, installations\, prints and drawings have been shown across Europe and the US\, with upcoming solo shows at the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain\, Connecticut; Municipal Bonds in San Francisco; and Planthouse Gallery in Manhattan.

SUMMARY:Apply to the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Applications are open now for the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival! Festival dates are March 16-23\, 2025\, with most paid performances taking place between Thursday\, March 20 to Sunday\, March 23. There is no fee to apply. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival provides artists with opportunities to explore the edges of their work\, to collaborate across genres and to bring new and innovative performances to culturally adventurous audiences. Our continual goal is to curate experiences that expand the minds and hearts of our audiences and to be inclusive of artists who work within a myriad of genres\, styles\, and forms to create truly unique and original pieces in our community. \nWe accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length\, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length\, your piece may be grouped with another show\, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public\, and artists receive a stipend for their performance\, rather than relying on door sales. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival is a juried festival.\nWe carefully review each and every submission. Applicants must show their work (or fully present their concept) at a short virtual or in-person adjudication session in October or November. You will be notified of your acceptance status in November or December.

SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING: Deep Listening: The Story of Pauline Oliveros
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Deep Listening\, a new documentary film project on the life and work of American icon Pauline Oliveros. \nPauline Oliveros (1932-2016) composer\, performer\, humanitarian\, was an important pioneer in American Music. Acclaimed internationally\, for six decades she explored sound-forging new ground for herself and others. Through improvisation\, electronic music\, ritual\, teaching and meditation she created a body of work with such a breadth of vision that it profoundly effects those who experience it and eludes many who try to write about it. \nOliveros was honored with many awards\, including four honorary doctorates\, grants and concerts internationally. Whether performing at the John F. Kennedy Centre in Washington DC\, in an underground Cistern\, or in the studios of a West German radio station\, Oliveros’ commitment to interaction with the moment was unchanged. Through Deep Listening Pieces and earlier Sonic Meditations\, Oliveros introduced the concept of incorporating all environmental sounds into musical performance. She spoke of this as “playing the space\,” playing with whatever space she performed in as another instrument. As she said\, “Listening to space changes the space\, and changing the space changes listening.” In playing this way\, she applied focused concentration\, skilled musicianship\, and strong improvisational skills\, all of which were hallmarks of her performances. \nShe built a loyal following through her extensive teaching\, concerts\, recordings\, publications\, and musical compositions that she wrote for soloists and ensembles in music\, dance\, theater\, and inter-arts companies. She also provided leadership within the music community by acting in an advisory capacity for organizations such as The National Endowment for the Arts\, New York State Council for the Arts\, and many private foundations. She served as Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Darius Milhaud Composer in Residence at Mills College. \nOliveros was vocal about representing the needs of individual artists\, about the need for diversity and experimentation in the arts and promoting cooperation and good will among people. She founded the Deep Listening Institute\, formerly Pauline Oliveros Foundation\, and now Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. \n“Deep Listening is listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what you are doing. Such intense listening includes the sounds of daily life\, of nature\, or one’s own thoughts as well as musical sounds. Deep Listening represents a heightened state of awareness and connects to all that there is. As a composer I make my music through Deep Listening.”\n– Pauline Oliveros
