Each session begins with a guided morning exercise exploring essential artistic principles and techniques that bring depth\, energy\, and confidence to your work. Bring your own reference materials to create a personalized studio experience. Pastels\, paper\, and sketching and underpainting supplies are provided\, with premium sanded paper available for purchase. You’re also welcome to bring your own pastels and discover which colors will best complement and expand your palette. \nClass size limited to 6 \nARTIST BIO: \nAnne Strutz\, PSA\, IAPS-MC\, is an artist in motion\, pushing boundaries by infusing movement and energy into her paintings. For Anne painting begins with what you cannot see. She poses questions to herself before starting a painting. What is drawing me to this subject? What is the story I want to tell? What am I trying to express in each painting? No single mark is precious. No fear is allowed to enter the process behind the easel. All elements of the composition must work in unity. This process is critical for infusing energy into my work and allows me to respond directly to the piece as it evolves. \nAnne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure\, leading her from fashion and textile designer in NYC\, to teaching and developing art curricula for children in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2013 Anne turned her focus to fine art. After viewing a pastel exhibition at the Noyse Museum of Art in Hammonton N.J. Anne began her journey with the pastel medium. The tangible aspects of the medium\, with the ability to draw\, paint\, layer\, and combine with other mediums has led her on an energetic journey pushing the qualities of pastel in her work. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal multiple times\, Pratique Des Arts and Strokes of Genius and the 2022 and 2024 IAPS Souvenir Book. She has also written multiple articles for the Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. \nAnne is the past president and workshop chair of the Piedmont Pastel Society. In 2019 she participated in the Dueling Demonstration event at the International Association of Pastel Societies convention which occurs every two years. In 2022 and 2024 Anne was invited back to be one of the faculty artists to demonstrate her techniques at the convention. Anne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Pickens\, South Carolina.

DESCRIPTION:Join co-hosts Carmen & Sarah of Seeds of Solidarity to learn the ins and outs of composting and how to turn food scraps into healthy soil! Beginning with a short presentation\, participants will learn why composting matters\, what’s happening inside a compost pile\, and a variety of composting methods including traditional piles\, tumblers\, bokashi\, and worm bins. Next participants will get hands-on with real compost samples and learn how to balance “greens” and “browns” to create healthy compost as well as how to identify unfinished\, finished\, and anaerobic compost. Finally participants will take an optional tour of the Seeds of Solidarity greenhouse and learn about plans for their future composting system.

DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nRAINBOW GIRLS\nThe Rainbow Girls are an eclectic folk\, Americana\, and indie-rock trio from Northern California\, featuring core members Erin Chapin\, Caitlin Gowdey\, and Vanessa May. Known for their soul-touching four-part harmonies and a “stomp-folk” sound\, the multi-instrumentalists easily switch between guitars\, ukulele\, accordion\, harmonica\, and percussion during their energetic live shows. \nThe group was formed in 2010 at an underground open mic called “Bean Night” in Isla Vista\, California. Living together in a dorm known as the “Rainbow House” near the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, the band initially started as a collective of female musicians before evolving into a trio. They honed their grassroots following by busking on the streets of Europe and playing at local farmers’ markets before eventually relocating to the countryside just north of the San Francisco Bay Area. \nKnown to describe themselves as “a gang of sweet angels punching you in the heart\,” the Rainbow Girls prioritize community\, resilience\, and genuine audience connection. Their songwriting reflects the human experience\, tackling themes of love\, honest self-reflection\, and social justice.

DESCRIPTION:Each year Asheville locals look forward to the annual Scouting America Troop 17 and Pack 17 barbecue dinner fundraiser. The event\, set for Saturday\, September 26\, 2026\, offers tender\, juicy Western North Carolina smoked BBQ dinners with all the fixin’s. Take out dinners will be served along the creek of the Riceville Fire Department and Community Center\, 2251 Riceville Road\, Asheville\, NC\, 11:00AM – 3:00PM\, while supplies last. Outside Creekside picnic tables are available for dining. \nPitmasters smoke premium North Carolina pork shoulders throughout the night prior to the event. Dinners include a generous portion of tender\, juicy BBQ pork\, homemade BBQ sauce\, home baked beans\, North Carolina BBQ slaw and a southern roll. \nThe charge for BBQ dinner plates will be $12.00. Reservations are not required. Creekside Picnic Tables available for all. Additional donations to benefit the Scouts are always appreciated. A special All Beef Hotdogs and chips will be available for $6.00 \n“Local Scouting America Packs and Troops raise funds to provide support for Scouts in their service area\,” said Committee Chairman Dan Little. “Fundraising creates equality in Scouting\,  allowing youth to attend camps and activities they otherwise couldn’t afford. Scouting programs cost far more than the national registration fee covers and fundraising is the only way to keep activities affordable\, equitable\, and high quality for every family.”  \nRaised funds are also used to purchase flags for our veterans’ graves. On Memorial Day\, Independence Day and Veterans Day\, Scout Troop 17 honors our deceased veterans at Bethel United Methodist Cemetery by placing United States flags on their graves. \nIf you have a youth between kindergarten and 18 years that would be interested in Scouts\, there will be a Scouting America representative at the BBQ event to provide information on membership. \nScouts Serving Others: Since 1910\, over 4\,200 young men in Western North Carolina have earned the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. Through their Eagle Scout service projects\, thousands of community service hours have been conducted to benefit Western North Carolina communities. Scouts in WNC will perform over 40\,000 hours of community service in 2026.

This family-friendly event will entertain people of all ages. \nAdmission to the event is $5 per person for ages 4 and up. Children 3 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door; cash and card accepted. \nEverything during the event is included in admission. Children can make a number of crafts with the Heritage Weavers & Fiber Artists and participate in a farm-wide scavenger hunt. All visitors can go on a wagon ride and take a self-guided tour of the historic farm house and barn loft museum. Champions for Wildlife will be on site with activities. Every visitor can get a bag of popcorn and a drink with their admission. The farm will also be debuting the new orienteering course that takes visitors around the 15 acres with maps and compasses to find a series of checkpoints. Chris Gkikas of Northline Navigation will be on site to teach visitors how to use the course.

DESCRIPTION:Read 2 Succeed Asheville/Buncombe is hosting the Reading Opens the World Book Drive and Family Literacy Fair in partnership with American Federation of Teachers and AFPENC\, with support from APRI\, First Book\, and other community partners. \nOn Sunday\, September 27\, more than 30\,000 free books will be available for children\, families\, educators\, schools\, and community programs across Western North Carolina. Books for readers from birth through high school will include English- and Spanish-language titles. Educators may select up to 50 books each for their classrooms\, with no cap on the number of educators who may participate from one school. \nThe event falls on the second anniversary of Hurricane Helene and will recognize the sustained work of students\, families\, educators\, schools\, and community partners throughout our region’s education recovery. \nJoin us from noon-4 p.m. at Martin L. Nesbitt Jr. Discovery Academy in Asheville.
