Based in Santa Cruz\, California\, the group met as teenagers\, picking and jamming together as kids at local music festivals and jams until one day\, they decided they would be a band. \n“Our roots go really deep\,” explains de facto band leader Lee. “We met when we were young kids… We definitely decided to choose each other as a chosen family band later on in life\, but in a lot of ways it was naturally just like that in the beginning.” \n“It was like one of those late at night things\,” she continued. “We were sitting on a trailer at Grass Valley” at the annual Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival held in the Sierra Nevada foothills – “Someone said\, ‘All of us right here\, we’re a band now.’ We kind of didn’t take it seriously\, but we were like\, okay\, we’ll be a band!” \nTHE CODY SISTERS \nThe Cody Sisters band is the very heart of contemporary acoustic Folk and Bluegrass in Colorado\, the United States\, and the UK. SUMMARY:Adult Studio: Introduction to Papermaking
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will give you hands-on experience working with several pulps to learn the basics of western style mould and deckle papermaking.\nYou will learn:\n• how to process recycled and commercial fibers into pulp at home or in a paper studio\n• what tools and equipment are needed for papermaking\n• how to pull\, press and dry sheets of paper\nThe day will start with a discussion about papermaking and will explore a variety of handmade paper samples. Afterwards\, we will set up vats of pulp and make sheets of paper together. Each participant will take home a stack of sample papers. It’s up to you how you use the finished sheets. All are welcome. No experience necessary. \nAlyssa Sacora (she/her) is a crafts person working in plant-based mediums of papermaking\, book arts\, basketry\, and weaving. She finds inspiration by observing relationships between plants and humans throughout time. To reduce her footprint and encourage creative thinking\, she primarily works with locally available and repurposed natural materials. In addition to and in support of her craft\, she tends a large garden in Fairview\, NC with fruits and vegetables\, medicinal herbs\, and art plants. \nAlyssa has taught for a variety of organizations in WNC and often utilizes an outside setting to help her students make the connection that we are nature and that our lives are intertwined with the plants\, the soil\, and the air around us. The afternoon will also include historical exhibits\, live music\, refreshments\, and a 1:15 pm ribbon cutting with the Black Mountain and Swannanoa Chamber of Commerce.\nQuietude has been part of the valley since 1926. After damage from Hurricane Helene\, this anniversary is a meaningful chance to share its history and welcome the community back. I’ve attached the press release and would be glad to arrange an interview or provide historical photographs.\nThe event is at Quietude Retreat Center\, 1130 Montreat Road\, Black Mountain. DESCRIPTION:Citizen Vinyl and The Grey Eagle Present \nJoin us for the 25th anniversary NewSong Music Competition\, presented by Citizen Vinyl. The program’s curated showcases have been a fixture in the national music scene since 2001. The competition finals\, formerly staged in New York City at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts\, relocated to Asheville\, N.C. in 2017. \nEight finalists selected from advance online submissions from across North America and beyond\, will perform\, compete\, and connect with one another. A panel of music industry judges will select one grand prize winner to receive a fully funded six-song EP\, plus 300 vinyl records of the grand prize project pressed at Citizen Vinyl. \nAll ages • Seated show\nLimited number of premium seating tickets available.
