SUMMARY:Palaces for the People: Guastavino's Great American Places
DESCRIPTION:From 1882 to 1943\, in 31 states and six countries\, Raphael Guastavino and his son created more than 600 unique tile domes and vaultings that met his criteria of health\, safety\, and beauty. Palaces for the People is an exhibition about his life and works. It is now open at Asheville Museum of History\, in the city where Guastavino completed his final projects. Unable to find a seat in the tiny Catholic church in Asheville\, he built his last great structure\, the St. Lawrence Basilica. In Asheville\, the exhibit will feature additional elements and artifacts highlighting Guastavino’s time in and around the city. The Exhibition is a co-operative venture of the Guastavino Alliance\, Christmount\, Swannanoa Valley Museum\, and St. Lawrence Basilica.

SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Stellar Picks: A Community Choice Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is for everyone who has a favorite piece of art in the WCU Fine Art Museum collection—or would like to discover one! The Museum recently launched a new web portal for searching the Museum’s permanent collection online. The portal includes images and information about hundreds of works of art from the Museum’s 2\,100-piece collection\, which has a focus on contemporary art of the Americas. The public is invited to browse the new online database and cast a vote for the object they would most like to see on view. Museum staff will tally these votes this spring and present the community’s top picks in April 2024. \nArtwork created by WCU Student Roy Torda.

SUMMARY:Poetry 101: The Curious Practice of Paying Attention
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is the written act of paying attention. Paying attention to words\, rhythm\, and writing but most importantly the worlds that inspire you to write. Namely\, your world. \n“Wanted: a needle swift enough to sew this poem into a blanket.” -Charles Simic \nHave you ever swooned at the thought of exploring your full expression\, only to shuffle around the house more determined to rearrange mothballs than get something on paper? \nPoetry is undoubtedly a practice\, but it doesn’t have to be an intimidating sport for Creative Gods alone. The only “ask” is to take note and notice of your life. \nWe’ll help develop the work itself\, together. \nThis full-bodied beginner’s poetry class will help you shift from “Oof\, I could never…” into “Wait\, where’s my journal?!” by tuning into your world: to the color palette of grass\, to coffee-shop conversation\, to the twitch in your left elbow. If you want language for the volcanic prayers of your soul or to describe your partner’s voice whispering “I love you” at 4am\, we’ll get there. This class weaves the elements of poetry\, forms of poetry\, guided discussion with peers\, and the works of prolific poets all into a multidisciplinary play space. Plus\, oodles (oodles!) of writing time to build personal confidence and craft. This class immerses itself in artful experimentation across mediums\, paired with a toolkit of technical writing skills. It’s the ultimate permission slip to be a beginner. \n“Poetry is an echo\, asking a shadow to dance.” -Carl Sandburg \n5 wk series. 6/5-7/10 (7/3 cancelled)\, Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30p

DESCRIPTION:Join M A R and the Marmeladies for Latinx Brunch Sunday June 9 at 1pm at Burial Beer with guest artist Whitney Moore! \nM A R and the Marmeladies is a spirited 4-piece band rooted in the rich tapestry of Latin American Folk and ventures beyond boundaries of genres adding a touch of quirky bluesy indie and Latin flair over bilingual lyrics. Hailing originally from Peru and based in the US\, M A R\, the lead singer and guitars of the Marmeladies is a trans/non-binary songwriter\, musician and producer. He started the band along with multi-instrumentalist Andy John on bass\, harmonica\, cello\, slide guitar\, and whatever other instrument he’d pull from his closet. Zack Downes plays Latin American rhythms on the drums keeping an indie feel\, along with Madelyn Ilana on violin and vocals!

SUMMARY:The Campfireball: Yearning
DESCRIPTION:The Campfireball is kind of like if Mr. Rogers was the host of Double Dare. Every month at Story Parlor we pick an existential theme and find all kinds of different ways to explore the people in the audience’s real life stories\, experiences and anedotes around that theme. In June we’ll dive into “YEARNING” — what have we wanted and what have we been willing to do to get what we wanted? Hopefully by the end you’ll be yearning for more Campfireball ;) There’s nothing to prepare and nothing to fear\, participation isn’t mandatory\, it’s just as much fun and just as important to sit back and listen to other people’s stories as it is to play along. \nThursday June 13th at Story Parlor\, doors at 7:00\, show at 7:30.
