SUMMARY:In Conversation | Learning to See: Photographer Hazel Larsen Archer at Black Mountain College
DESCRIPTION:Join summer intern Sophie Weiser as she explores the incredible life and work of Hazel Larsen Archer\, the first full-time photography teacher at Black Mountain College (BMC). During her nine years at BMC (1944-1953) Archer developed her unique method of “learning to see” using the camera as a tool. Weiser’s talk will also explore Archer’s experience with disability and how she navigated life on BMC Campus while producing a dazzling array of photos\, including her captivating portraits of fellow BMC students and teachers\, such as Josef and Anni Albers\, Ruth Asawa\, and Merce Cunningham. \nBio: \nSophie Weiser is a summer intern at the Asheville Art Museum\, working with the Learning and Engagement Department’s Summer Art Camp. She is going into her third year at Trinity College Dublin\, where she majors in Classics\, Ancient History and Archaeology\, with a focus in Classical Civilization. From the ages of three to seven she lived with her parents and twin sister in Asheville\, and has continued to return to the area throughout her life. Her time in the robust local art scene of Asheville and its surrounding areas has been integral in developing her commitment to and involvement with the arts and museum world.

SUMMARY:Book + Art | The Fabric of Wishful Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Join Kathleen Wilson\, co-curator of “Warp\, Weft\, and the Grid”\, for an introduction to her debut novel\, “The Fabric of Wishful Thinking.” \nThis richly researched portrait of 1910 rural Appalachia is written by an author with deep expertise in Appalachian history\, craft\, and culture. Along with its compelling story\, Wilson’s book offers a rare look inside early Southern textile mill culture. “The Fabric of Wishful Thinking” is a powerful story about families and the fractures that result from divided loyalties. Ella Hutchinson’s story offers a portrait of female resilience during a time without legal protections for mothers and wives. It is a gripping novel about friendship\, motherhood\, first love\, and irrevocable loss.

SUMMARY:Opening Day | Asheville Strong: Celebrating Art and Community After Hurricane Helene
DESCRIPTION:The Asheville Art Museum is delighted to present an exhibition of artwork by artists who live and work in the Helene-affected Appalachia region. The Museum was founded by a group of passionate artists in 1948 with a mission\, in part\, to share and promote the art of Western North Carolina. Carrying on that legacy\, this special\, non-juried exhibition celebrates the strength and diversity of our regional arts community acknowledging the significant impact of Hurricane Helene on the lives of artists across Southern Appalachia. Our aim is to provide an opportunity and venue for impacted artists to showcase their work\, connect with each other and collectors\, and join together in a collective act of resilience. \nThe Museum offers pay-what-you-wish admission for residents in Helene-affected counties.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Moving Stillness: Mount Rainier\, 1979
DESCRIPTION:Bill Viola’s Moving Stillness: Mount Rainier\, 1979 on loan from Art Bridges is an immersive experience that explores the ideas of death and regeneration in nature. In a darkened room\, sounds from nature envelop the viewer\, as a placid pool of water reflects a projected image of Mount Rainier onto a screen. The water is periodically disturbed\, causing the image to dissolve and slowly recompose as the pool settles. \nImage: Bill Viola\, “Moving Stillness: Mount Rainier 1979” (1979)\, Video/sound installation.
