SUMMARY:Hemlock Treatment Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is hosting a demonstration of chemical treatment methods to control the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) on Saturday\, June 13th from 9am to 12pm at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa\, NC. \nHemlock trees in western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. These trees have been suffering for over two decades from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, an invasive insect that can kill the tree in as little as four years. \nHowever\, hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before. This hands-off demonstration will be useful for landowners\, natural resource managers and tree care professionals. We will use the trees on-site to practice assessing hemlock health to determine the best treatment options\, and HRI staff will demonstrate the HWA chemical treatment methods used on national forest and state lands. These methods are available to all private landowners in North Carolina without obtaining a license or certification. We will also discuss applicator and environmental safety\, special considerations and guidance for hiring a tree care professional. \nThe backup weather date for this event will be Saturday\, June 27th. Please also note that the demonstration will occur on a slightly sloped surface and some demonstrations may require climbing a short hill to view them. \nNC pesticide applicators can earn 3 credits for attending (categories G\, L\, N\, D\, and X)\, and ISA members can earn CEUs (credits currently pending). \nRegistration is required. Please visit our website to register. Email education@savehemlocksnc.org or call 828-252-4783 with questions about the event.

SUMMARY:Green River\, Green Love & Good Luck: Hemlock Treatment Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:Are you in need of a bit of (belated) luck on this St. Patrick’s Day? Join Hemlock Restoration Initiative in the Green River Game Land near Saluda\, NC for a Hemlock Treatment Volunteer Workday on Saturday\, March 28th\, from 9:30-4:30. \nWe have tried to make this an annual tradition\, and now the Green needs our help more than ever. Hemlock trees are an essential and irreplaceable part of western North Carolina’s forests\, but for over 20 years\, they’ve been under threat from the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)—an invasive insect that can kill hemlocks in our region in as little as four years. \nHelp us protect hemlocks from HWA in the Green River Cove Road area! Volunteers will be moving through the forest off-trail applying insecticide to individual hemlocks for HWA control. Our workday site will have flatter terrain and a mostly dry river crossing; waterproof boots are recommended\, but not required. \nPlease note\, volunteers will be working with insecticide. Every volunteer will be paired with a trained HRI team member who will provide instruction and guidance. \nRegistration is required. To register\, visit the event page on our website and fill out the form at the bottom of the page by Thursday night\, March 26th. More details about the meeting location and what to bring will be provided after registration. Reach out to us at (828) 252-4783 with any questions. \nNote: Since we will be working with insecticide\, children under 18 and pets are not permitted at this event.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday with Forest Restoration Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Join Hemlock Restoration Initiative on Tuesday\, October 28th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as we lend a hand to our partners at the Forest Restoration Alliance (FRA). Instead of chemically treating hemlock trees\, volunteers will be combating hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) by supporting the FRA’s work at their research facility in Waynesville\, where they are breeding HWA-resistant hemlock trees. \nVolunteers will complete tasks in FRA’s greenhouse and nursery to help with their selective breeding program. Volunteers will also get a tour of the facility by researcher Ben Smith and learn about their efforts to restore hemlocks. This is a great opportunity to help hemlocks without handling insecticide. \nRegistration is required. Fill out the form linked on our event webpage by Thursday\, October 23rd to register. Please contact Ayla Busch at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org or 828-252-4783 with any questions. These volunteer days fill up quickly\, so it’s a good idea to sign up soon to ensure your spot! \nMore information about the meeting location and what to bring will be provided after registering. \nNote: While we love kids\, please contact us before registering anyone under 18 so we can determine if our volunteer activities will be age-appropriate.

SUMMARY:Hemlock Hike at Gorges State Park
DESCRIPTION:Join the Hemlock Restoration Initiative for an educational hike at 10 a.m. on Sunday\, September 14th at one of North Carolina’s hidden gems: Gorges State Park. This rugged park features waterfalls\, sheer rock walls\, many miles of trails\, and a diverse collection of flora and fauna. \nOur 2.8 mile (total) out and back hike will explore only a small section of the park\, but includes a dense patch of hemlocks crowded around a tranquil stream before climbing to a ridge that exhibits an entirely different environment than the trail’s streamside beginnings. There are a few steep sections\, but this hike is only of moderate difficulty as it follows old logging roads and has less than 500 feet of total elevation gain. \nWe will start out by exploring the streamside area and its many hemlocks\, diving into details on hemlocks and their conservation. We will then head up the Auger Hole and Heath Pine Ridge trails. \nGorges State Park is located about 5 miles southwest of Rosman\, NC and is near the NC-SC border. \nThe back-up weather date for this hike will be on September 21st at 10:00am. \nFor any questions\, contact Olivia Hall at education@savehemlocksnc.org or 828-252-4783. While the hike is free to attend\, your RSVP is required\, and space is limited. Please sign up by Wednesday\, September 10th by filling out the form linked on the event webpage. More details about meeting location and what to bring will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:Pink Beds Hemlock Hike with Mills River Partnership
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, June 13th from 1:00pm – 4:30pm at Pink Beds Loop for an educational hike with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative and Mills River Partnership. \nWe will begin near the Pink Beds picnic area\, where several healthy hemlocks line the edge of the field. As we make our way through the loop\, we will stop to talk about hemlocks in the area\, their importance in our riparian ecosystems\, and how we manage to control hemlock woolly adelgid. \nMills River Partnership will join to discuss the Mills River watershed\, the stream’s present day uses\, and a brief history of the stream. \nThis 3.2-mile loop is mostly flat\, with a few creek crossings and gentle inclines. It’s an excellent choice for those looking to enjoy the forest without a strenuous hike. \nThe backup weather date for this hike will be June 27th at 1pm. If you have any questions\, contact Ayla Busch at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org or 828-252-4783. While the hike is free to attend\, your RSVP is required\, and space is limited. SUMMARY:Hemlock Treatment Volunteer Workday at Violet Hill Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative is hosting a Hemlock Treatment Volunteer Workday on Tuesday\, December 10th from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Violet Hill Cemetery in Asheville\, NC. \nHemlock trees in western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. These trees have been suffering for over two decades from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, an invasive insect that can kill the tree in as little as four years. \nCome help us treat hemlocks in this beautiful area! This volunteer day will involve re-treating healthy hemlocks around the cemetery area on mostly flat terrain\, great for those interested in a less strenuous day. \nOn HRI chemical treatment workdays\, volunteers treat hemlocks with insecticide to protect them from hemlock woolly adelgid. Every volunteer will be paired with an experienced\, licensed professional who will provide instruction and guidance. For more questions and to register\, reach out to Ayla at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Work Day with the Forest Restoration Alliance
DESCRIPTION:—This event is STILL ON despite the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. We hope that by continuing to provide this opportunity for some simple plant therapy and connection with each other\, this nature restoration-centered event may offer some reprieve from the daily realities so many of us have been experiencing.— \nJoin the Hemlock Restoration Initiative on Friday\, October 25th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as we lend a hand to our partners at the Forest Restoration Alliance (FRA). Instead of chemically treating hemlock trees\, volunteers will be combating hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) by supporting the work of the FRA at their research facility in Waynesville\, where they are breeding HWA-resistant hemlock trees. \nPlease RSVP by emailing Ayla Busch at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org by Tuesday\, October 22nd. Please include a contact phone number and email address when you sign up. These volunteer days fill up quickly\, so it’s a good idea to sign up soon to ensure your spot. \nMore information about the meeting location and what to bring will be provided after registering.

SUMMARY:Hemlock Treatment Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is hosting a demonstration of chemical treatment methods to control the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) on Tuesday\, October 22nd from 1pm to 4pm at the NC Arboretum\, located at 100 Frederick Law Olmsted Way\, Asheville\, NC. \nThe program is free to the North Carolina Arboretum members\, but nonmembers will need to pay a $20 entrance fee. Registration is required. Please visit our website at savehemlocksnc.org/events/ to register.
