SUMMARY:Church Trail System Opening
DESCRIPTION:FLAT ROCK\, N.C. – One of the oldest churches in the mountains\, St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock\, will soon share its wooded acreage with hikers and nature lovers. The church will open a new trail system called The Trails of St. John the weekend of September 6 -7 at 1895 Greenville Highway\, approximately two miles south of downtown Hendersonville. \nAll are invited to celebrate this special event. The ribbon cutting for the Grand Opening of The Trails of St. John will take place Sunday\, September 7\, at 1:00 p.m. Members of Holy Hikes WNC are expected to attend as the national chapter salutes five years of monthly hikes across North and South Carolina mountain trails. \nThe expansive wooded setting in the heart of Flat Rock recently revealed long hidden historical and archeological secrets. The new trails meander along the west side of Greenville Highway intersecting the nearly disappeared “Old Jerusalem Path” which connected the parsonage with the church in the 1800s. \nThese discoveries and the proximity to nearby Carl Sandburg National Historic Site suggested a ripe opportunity for a new trail system featuring the “New Jerusalem Path” at the Trails of St. John\, now available to church and community members for recreation and contemplation. Reverend Joshua Stephens\, church Rector\, prays that “our community will find inspiration as well as rest and renewal here on this holy ground.” \nLong before the railroad opened up Western North Carolina\, Charlestonians endured a week-long carriage ride on rough dirt roads to escape the heat and disease of low country summers. They made Flat Rock their “Little Charleston of the Mountains” each May through September. In 1827\, Charles and Susan Baring built their summer home and a chapel which became St. John in the Wilderness\, the first Episcopal church in WNC\, now on the National Register of Historic Sites. The church witnessed the tribulations of slavery and the Civil War as well as the joys and sorrows of the last two centuries while growing and serving Flat Rock and the larger community. \nThe Trails of St. John will be open to the public from dawn to dusk each day with information posted at kiosks on the property. Special events highlight the opening weekend. A children’s mountain bike race will be held Saturday\, September 6 from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm. To register\, visit www.stjohnflatrock.org/sjw-mtb. After the 11:00 am church service on Sunday\, refreshments will be served at 12:30 pm before the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:00 pm. \nFor more information\, visit the website: www.stjohnflatrock.org/trails.

SUMMARY:Historic Church Tours
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Flat Rock History \nTours of St. John in the Wilderness \nFLAT ROCK\, N.C. Tours of the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock will resume on March 15. \nThe guided tours of the church and churchyard (cemetery) are led by church docents. “One of the joys of attending a beautiful holy place like St. John in the Wilderness is sharing it with our visitors. Our history is intertwined not just with the history of Flat Rock\, but with that of coastal South Carolina\, the home of our founders and earliest congregants\,” said Polly Morrice\, one of the docents leading the tours. \nHeld on the third Saturdays of the month from March through December\, tours start inside the Carriage Door entrance of the Church promptly at 11 a.m. and last about an hour. Additional tours are held seasonally on the first Saturday of the month from June through September. There will be no rain dates and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes. \nThe tours are free but advance reservations must be made online through the church’s website\, www.stjohnflatrock.org/tours. Space is limited for each tour. \nThe historically significant churchyard contains graves of distinguished political figures and local citizens as well as those of unnamed 19th-century enslaved persons. \n“As docents\, we strive to communicate the sweep of what happened and how it shaped us\, the good and the sometimes painful\,” Morrice reflected. “We do like to remind visitors that St. John is not a museum\, but a vibrant\, welcoming church. We’re still moving forward\, and welcome all who would like to make more history with us.” \nThe church is located at 1895 Greenville Highway. For more information call the church office at 828-693-9783 or visit www.stjohnflatrock.org. \nSt. John in the Wilderness History \nIn 1827\, Charles Baring\, a member of the Baring banking family of England\, built a home in Flat Rock. He and his wife\, Susan\, wanted a summer place to escape the oppressive heat\, humidity\, and malaria of the South Carolina Lowcountry where they lived. \nThe Barings built a chapel on the property of their newly constructed home. Soon after it was built\, the small wooden structure burned down in a woods fire. In 1833\, work began on a second church built of handmade brick. \nIn August 1836\, the Barings deeded their chapel to the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina\, and 20 members of the Flat Rock “summer colony” of Lowcountry planters and merchants formed an Episcopal parish. In the 1890s\, St. John in the Wilderness became part of the Diocese of Western North Carolina; it is the oldest parish in that diocese. \nWith almost all its congregation traveling home to the Lowcountry after the summer season\, the church operated mainly during that season for its first 120 years. So rapid was the growth of the Flat Rock summer community during the 1830s and 1840s\, however\, that the parish membership outgrew the small chapel. In the early 1850s\, the decision was made to rebuild the church\, doubling its size. The English chapel-style structure that stands today is\, with only a few minor modifications\, the church that was completed in 1852.

SUMMARY:A Christmas Memory
DESCRIPTION:Flat Rock\, N.C. – Returning to the stage for his sixth straight season at St. John in the Wilderness\, actor and theologian E.R. Until he was ten years old\, Truman Capote lived with elderly relatives in a small town in rural Alabama. The story is an autobiographical account of those years\, especially of his relationship with one of the elderly cousins\, Miss Sook Faulk. \nThe greatest examples of Capote’s skillfulness as a writer are found among the stories inspired by his early childhood and the relationships he forged growing up in the rural South. \nA Christmas Memory first appeared in Mademoiselle Magazine in the late 1950s\, when Capote was 27 years old\, and has since become one of his most beloved and bestselling works. \nMr. Capote was a flamboyant figure in both literary and cultural circles. Controversial\, colorful and complex\, he was a writer of uncommon grace. His best-known works include Breakfast at Tiffany’s\, In Cold Blood\, Other Voices Other Rooms\, and The Grass Harp. Mr. Capote died in 1984 at the age of 59. \nEarle Ross (E.R.) Haire\, Jr. PhD is a native of North Carolina. His professional achievements combine acting and theology. In Los Angeles\, he worked as an actor and at Paramount Studios. Theater credits in Los Angeles include The Foreigner\, You Can’t Take It With You\, Hamlet\, Henry V\, Richard III\, The Importance of Being Earnest\, The Caucasian Chalk Circle\, and the comedy spoof Riffs of Shakespeare. Dr. Haire is also a member of the Screen Actors Guild. \nDr. Haire received a Master of Sacred Theology from Yale University\, studying at both the Yale Divinity School and the Yale School of Drama. He earned his PhD in Theology and Ethics with a concentration in religion\, media and culture at the University of Edinburgh in 2017. \nSt. John in the Wilderness is located in Flat Rock\, NC at 1895 Greenville Highway. SUMMARY:Learning to Dance with Dementia
DESCRIPTION:Explore an Afternoon of Awareness \nLearning to Dance with Dementia: When to Lead\, When to Follow and When to Get Out of the Way \nThe Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock will present a free workshop “Learning to Dance with Dementia: When to Lead\, When to Follow and When to Get Out of the Way.” on Thursday\, October 17 from 1pm until 4pm in the Parish Hall across the street from the church\, located at 1905 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock. \nUnlock the secrets to compassionate and effective dementia care at this workshop with Mary Donnelly\, a dynamic dementia consultant followed by a panel discussion. This interactive session offers insight and strategies to help caregivers navigate the delicate balance of communicating with a person whose brain is changing. Discover how to harmonize your approach with the unique needs of the person in your care\, fostering a more fulfilling less stressful caregiving experience. Join us to enhance your skills and learn how to dance gracefully through the challenges of dementia care. \n“We are providing this afternoon program\, because dementia is becoming so prevalent in society that we feel the need to educate our friends and neighbors” said Linda Giltner\, an event organizer. \nDementia has and is touching so many of our loved ones. At the beginning we do not understand why they are not behaving or responding to us and situations as they had in the past. Then our question is\, what is happening? We are trying to present information and ways to deal with this disease called DEMENTIA! \nAnother event organizer Ronnie Doty said\, “I have been a fan of Mary Donnelly since attending Caregivers College at MemoryCare when my husband was diagnosed with dementia. Several years later when I’d been a caregiver for more than six years\, I thought St. John would be the perfect place for her to share her wealth of wisdom. Caregiving is tiring and taxing and can begin to affect one’s health before we can become aware of it! I know Mary’s presentation will help caregivers think differently about living with someone with dementia.” \nLimited seating is available for this seminar but participants must RSVP by visiting http://bit.ly/dancewithdementia. For more information call the church office at 828-693-9783. \nMore on the Presenter \nMary Donnelly is past Board President for MemoryCare\, a nationally-recognized nonprofit clinic in Asheville.
