Their music appears to weave in and out of the fabric of their surroundings\, reflecting their time spent living across the Southeast and studying its regional folk traditions and natural histories. Having performed recently at Big Ears\, Hopscotch\, Sound & Gravity (and many other places along the way) the group’s music resonates well beyond their regional roots. Their newest record\, Heavy Water\, will be out May 22 on the venerable Thrill Jockey Records. The ensemble continues to stretch the parameters of acoustic instrumental expression with masterful flourishes of dense\, textural arrangements\, subtle minimalist gestures and deft improvisation.

This week we have Denver legend Ben Roy at FBRB! \nIf you aren’t familiar with Ben Roy\, he’s been taking comedy audiences by storm since 2004\, bringing an unparalleled energy and unique voice to the stage. Often compared to Lewis Black or Bill Hicks due to his passionate\, ranting approach\, Roy has a style that is definitively his own. \nRoy cut his comedic teeth in Denver at the world famous Comedy Works. Since then\, Ben has been selected to perform at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival (for New Faces\, The Nasty Show\, and his own hour show)\, Just For Laughs Toronto\, Just For Laughs Chicago\, The New York Comedy Festival\, Austin’s South by Southwest festival (where he was an official invitee for both music and comedy in the same year)\, and many more. \nRoy has been featured on HBO’s Funny as Hell series; as well as on the Comedy Central shows Adam DeVine’s House Party\, Corporate\, @midnight\, This Is Not Happening\, and TruTV’s Talk Show The Game Show. Ben has also released five stand-up comedy albums and was listed as one of Variety’s Top 10 Comics to Watch. In this two-day workshop\, students will complete two original paintings while exploring innovative mixed-media techniques. \nYou’ll create: \nOne oil painting using a brayer and brushes to apply the paint.\nOne oil painting on paper\, enhanced with soft pastel exploring a different surface and approach\nThis workshop is designed for artists who want to expand their creative process and experiment with new techniques in a supportive\, small-group setting. What am I trying to express in each painting? No single mark is precious. No fear is allowed to enter the process behind the easel. All elements of the composition must work in unity. This process is critical for infusing energy into my work and allows me to respond directly to the piece as it evolves. \nAnne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure\, leading her from fashion and textile designer in NYC\, to teaching and developing art curricula for children in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2013 Anne turned her focus to fine art. After viewing a pastel exhibition at the Noyse Museum of Art in Hammonton N.J. Anne began her journey with the pastel medium. The tangible aspects of the medium\, with the ability to draw\, paint\, layer\, and combine with other mediums has led her on an energetic journey pushing the qualities of pastel in her work. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal multiple times\, Pratique Des Arts and Strokes of Genius and the 2022 and 2024 IAPS Souvenir Book. She has written multiple articles for the Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. Anne is the past president and workshop chair of the Piedmont Pastel Society. In 2019 she participated in the Dueling Demonstration event at the International Association of Pastel Societies convention which occurs every two years. In 2022 and 2024 Anne was invited back to be one of the faculty artists to demonstrate her techniques at the convention. Anne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Pickens\, South Carolina.

Not exactly a Grateful Dead cover band\, this quartet from Asheville\, North Carolina\, shines a spotlight specifically on songs lead by Jerry Garcia\, who fronted the Grateful Dead in an alternating fashion with his bandmates. The “long strange list” of Garcia compositions and his own wide range of cover songs comes to life with Jerry’s Dead’s exciting interpretations from this iconic catalog. Further extending their tribute\, Jerry’s Dead includes songs lead by Garcia in his many side projects throughout his accomplished career\, including the Jerry Garcia Band and his work with mandolinist David Grisman. To date Jerry’s Dead has performed well over 150 different Garcia pieces\, reinterpreting each in unique fashion to the delight of their growing fan base. Jerry’s Dead features Tim Marsh on guitar and lead vocals and includes Dan Pederson on bass and vocals\, Gus Vigo on keys and vocals\, and Lee Kram on drums and vocals. Since their debut on June 21\, 2021\, at The Straightaway Cafe\, Jerry’s Dead has brought Garcia’s music to many of Western Carolina’s well known breweries and music venues\, including Highland Brewing Company\, The Grey Eagle\, Pisgah Brewing Company\, The Asheville Music Hall\, and The French Broad River Brewing Company\, which hosts Jerry’s Dead every Thursday evening for two sets of free music. This weekly residency has become a real draw for the band\, creating a space for vendors\, dancers\, and music lovers to commune regularly. On occasion\, Jerry’s Dead has hosted some very special guests\, including Rob Barraco of The Dead\, Dark Star Orchestra\, Phil Lesh Quintet and Zen Tricksters; Lisa Mackey\, also of D.S.O.; Julian Pinelli\, who played fiddle with Peter Rowan\, a bluegrass bandmate of Garcia in Old and in the Way; and Joe Marcinek of the Joe Marcinek Band and Dead Funk Summit\, featuring George Porter Jr. of The Meters and Melvin Seals of the Jerry Garcia Band. If it makes her smile\, then the refining process begins. Pieces may be fired multiple times until the surface treatment is completed. Regardless of the outcome\, her work deals with the idea of human fragility. It is about compassion for people as they journey from suffering on towards enlightenment.

A veteran of Merlefest and the Auckland Folk Festival\, David brings an intricate guitar style and a spirit of social hope to the stage. \nChinobay: A musician\, educator\, and cultural ambassador from Uganda\, Chinobay grew up immersed in the traditional music of the Kanyange king’s palace. Today\, he is a master of diverse African instrumentation and a storyteller who showcases the richness and humanity of the African continent. His performances feature the Kora (West African harp-lute)\, Kalimba (thumb piano)\, Tamani (talking drum)\, and the Ugandan Endongo.
