SUMMARY:Evon Streetman: Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of vintage photographs by Evon Streetman. \nEvon Streetman is a seminal figure in Southern photography whose experimental approach helped define the trajectory of contemporary photo-based art in the region. Initially trained as a painter\, she was an early pioneer in incorporating painterly processes and handwork into her photographs. She embraces the materiality of the photographic surface through interventions such as hand-coloring\, airbrushing\, and the application of gold and silver leaf. Her images often blur the line between documentation and transformation\, evoking a sense of place that is both intimate and enigmatic. \nStreetman’s work emerged alongside a broader movement of artists who redefined photography as a fine art medium\, including Clarissa Sligh\, William Christenberry\, and Eugene Meatyard. Like her contemporaries\, Streetman’s work explores memory and place\, remaining deeply rooted in the Southern landscape. \nIn addition to her artistic practice\, Streetman was an impactful educator. She assisted in developing the photography curriculum at Florida State University and later founded the photography program at the Penland School of Craft. Her work remains a standard in the study of alternative photographic practices and the visual culture of the American South.

SUMMARY:Sister Act - Flat Rock Playhouse - 10/2-10/25
DESCRIPTION:When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a crime\, she hides out in the last place anyone would look — a convent. Suddenly\, the sequins are swapped for habits\, and the nightclub turns into a nave. But when Deloris brings her unholy amount of soul to the choir loft\, heaven gets a whole new groove. \nSister Act is a holy-rolling\, soul-lifting celebration of sisterhood\, second chances\, and songs that raise the roof. As Deloris helps the sisters find their voices\, they just might change her heart in return. \nPart divine comedy\, part disco revival\, it’s proof that a little funk — and a lot of faith — can turn any sanctuary into a showstopper. \nEvent Times: 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:Lindsay Branham presents Heartwood: The Wisdom and Healing Kinship of Trees\, with Sonya Renee Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Join us in-store when environmental psychologist Lindsay Branham presents Heartwood: The Wisdom and Healing Kinship of Trees\, in conversation with spiritual and social theorist Sonya Renee Taylor. \nThe event is free but registration is required to reserve your seat. \nHeartwood: The Wisdom and Healing Kinship of Trees\nEmmy‑nominated filmmaker and University of Cambridge Environmental Psychologist Lindsay Branham invites readers into an embodied\, reciprocal relationship with trees to heal our severed connections to ourselves and the earth\, returning home to the living world. \nIn the midst of the California wildfire season\, Lindsay Branham was besieged by unexplainable health symptoms. Her descent into chronic illness challenged her notion of Western frameworks of “healing\,” compounded alongside rapid ecological loss. Through a catalytic love affair with a family of trees in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado\, an odyssey of healing unfolds—a poetic evocation to love the Earth\, and to be loved back. What if human and planetary health is connected? What if healing is an embodied ecological process\, not an outcome? What if trees are our guides to connection? \nThrough the intertwining rings of science and spirit\, this is the story of how Lindsay was summoned by trees\, brought together to share their enduring wisdom—we each belong to this world\, and it’s up to us to protect the whole of it. Heartwood conjures an invitation to go on a journey with trees; from strangers to kin because\, as Lindsay lays out in detail\, everything belongs\, and trees in all their sentinel\, entangled\, alchemical generosity embody that kinship\, defy domination and can help us both repair a lost relationship with the Earth and learn to embody mutuality\, collectivity and care for the forest. Combining scientific research from her PhD studies at Cambridge on interoceptive awareness\, our body’s “eighth sense\,” which she suggests is the sensuous language of the Earth\, readers will be walked through a step‑by‑step wonder-filled process of creating an intimate and reciprocal relationship with the more than human world\, while learning why remembering our birthright of belonging to nature is a central antidote to mitigating climate collapse. \nThis tender\, lyrical work explores concepts such as eco‑grief\, reciprocity as life force\, the pace of place\, erotic ecology\, attachment healing with nature\, composting suffering\, entangled futures\, loving inter-species kinship and death doulaship. Heartwood speaks directly to what is the missing piece at the heart of the unfolding environmental mega-crisis: the fact that our dissatisfaction\, discontent and despair are core symptoms of being separated from nature and shares exactly how to rediscover the medicine that is right under our feet.

SUMMARY:SHINYRIBS
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nSHINYRIBS\nShinyribs reassembles the American song bag like a picker in a junkyard; Texas singer-songwriter\, East Tx blues\, Louisiana swamp n’ rhythm\, honky tonk\, Oklahoma swing\, Golden-Triangle Cajun\, and Arkansas jazz are all filtered through the singular vision of Kevin Russell\, one of Austin’s most celebrated and criminally underrated singer-songwriters.\nThe Austin-based supergroup has entered a bold new chapter with the small baller “Shortribs” configuration — a tightly arranged powerhouse built to showcase what has always been at the heart of the Shinyribs experience: Russell’s legendary songwriting chops\, his iconic voice\, and the infamous hi-jinks of the self-proclaimed world’s oldest living male exotic dancer. Hip shaking\, booty twerking\, arm flapping\, high kicking and karate chopping good times are guaranteed to send you home with aching cheeks and tear-stained laughter. \nAt the rhythmic core is Keith Langford on drums — Russell’s musical partner of 30 years\, a bond forged in the crucible of legendary\, The Gourds— and as essential to the Shinyribs sound as the backbeat itself.\nMason Hankamer holds down the low end on bass\, pulling double duty as co-producer of the last 3 Ribs platters and musical director\, tightening the arrangements and the show into something leaner and more purposeful than ever. The Delta Dawns — both hailing from the famous Memphis/Mississippi alluvial plain — have been elevated to a full dynamic singing sisterhood: Kellee Broadway\, who doubles on percussion\, and Schaefer Llana\, who shakes the chandeliers and plays some guitar too. \nEric Baker\, a rising star in the Austin scene\, frisks the pianoforte like a long-lost Leon Russell. Rounding out the band — and perhaps its most exciting new voice — is lead guitarist and pedal steel wizard Cat Clemons. \nRussell himself says it best: “Clemons\, beyond just notes and licks galore\, possesses the ability to communicate psychically with audiences. It’s really a feat to be experienced. More than just being able to say you were there\, one will be able to try and describe their experience.” \nA Shinyribs show these days runs the gamut — from tongue-in-cheek winks and nudges to poignant stories of family\, loss\, grief\, and love. The poetic joy joins the musical melancholy like a rainbow over the swamp. Above and below\, a human collaboration of deep knowledge and soul\, expressed with a grace and groove unlike anything else. \nShinyribs has been nominated and won a slew of awards and honors\, but you will be the one going home with that Shiny trophy feeling. We are so excited you get to see Shinyribs soon. Lucky you! If you’ve never heard of Shinyribs\, that’s a good thing. Now you’ve got something to look forward to. Let’s try and keep this a secret. We don’t want a bunch of dilettantes and phonies ruining our good time.

Hip shaking\, booty twerking\, arm flapping\, high kicking and karate chopping good times are guaranteed to send you home with aching cheeks and tear-stained laughter. \nAt the rhythmic core is Keith Langford on drums — Russell’s musical partner of 30 years\, a bond forged in the crucible of legendary\, The Gourds— and as essential to the Shinyribs sound as the backbeat itself. \nMason Hankamer holds down the low end on bass\, pulling double duty as co-producer of the last 3 Ribs platters and musical director\, tightening the arrangements and the show into something leaner and more purposeful than ever.
