SUMMARY:Craft-itarianism: Community Action Through Craft
DESCRIPTION:The word craft-itarianism was coined by 2026 Center for Craft Curatorial Fellow Alyssa Velazquez to name artistic projects that generate employment\, raise awareness\, or offer therapeutic support through craft. These programs provide a space where people affected by addiction\, incarceration\, and gun violence can find solidarity while learning a skill. \nCraft-itarianism: Community Action Through Craft celebrates nonprofits and artists who believe in—and actively practice—the power of craft to support and empower individuals and communities. \nThis exhibition was curated by 2026 Center for Craft Curatorial Fellow Alyssa Velazquez. Launched in 2017\, the Curatorial Fellowship supports emerging curators exploring new ideas about craft with mentorship\, professional development\, and a $5\,000 honorarium to realize an exhibition. \nOn view February 27\, 2026–September 27\, 2026

SUMMARY:The Odd Couple - Flat Rock Playhouse - 8/28-9/19
DESCRIPTION:Pour a drink and duck for cover — domestic bliss is about to get messy. \nMeet Felix: impeccably pressed\, emotionally distressed\, and suddenly single. Meet Oscar: charmingly rumpled\, habitually late\, and blissfully allergic to coasters. When Felix moves in with his old pal Oscar after a marital meltdown\, neatness meets nonsense\, and the sparks fly. \nAshtrays overflow\, tempers flare\, and laughter fills the living room in Neil Simon’s effervescent comedy of friendship\, forgiveness\, and the fine art of driving each other crazy. \nThe Odd Couple is a classic cocktail of chaos and charm. Proof that opposites attract… so long as they don’t share a kitchen. \nEvent Times: 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:Evon Streetman: Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of vintage photographs by Evon Streetman. \nEvon Streetman is a seminal figure in Southern photography whose experimental approach helped define the trajectory of contemporary photo-based art in the region. Initially trained as a painter\, she was an early pioneer in incorporating painterly processes and handwork into her photographs. She embraces the materiality of the photographic surface through interventions such as hand-coloring\, airbrushing\, and the application of gold and silver leaf. Her images often blur the line between documentation and transformation\, evoking a sense of place that is both intimate and enigmatic. \nStreetman’s work emerged alongside a broader movement of artists who redefined photography as a fine art medium\, including Clarissa Sligh\, William Christenberry\, and Eugene Meatyard. Like her contemporaries\, Streetman’s work explores memory and place\, remaining deeply rooted in the Southern landscape. \nIn addition to her artistic practice\, Streetman was an impactful educator. She assisted in developing the photography curriculum at Florida State University and later founded the photography program at the Penland School of Craft. Her work remains a standard in the study of alternative photographic practices and the visual culture of the American South.

SUMMARY:Intro to Sewing Machine Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever taken your sewing machine apart? Did you know it’s recommended that you clean and oil your machine after every project or every 3 bobbin changes? Most ‘broken’ sewing machines are actually just dirty or dry machines! \nIt can be intimidating to take your machine apart to clean it\, but that’s what this class is for! Bring your own machine or borrow one\, just let us know which route you’re taking when you purchase a ticket so we can plan accordingly. \nIf you are bringing your own machine\, it’s recommended that you bring a copy of your machine’s manual if you have it. You can usually find a copy online by searching your machine’s make and model + “manual.”

SUMMARY:The Influence of Arabian Food - Sufra Time at Mocha Box Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Arabian food has been traveling the world for centuries—carried by merchants\, explorers\, migrants and families who brought their flavors and traditions wherever they went. Its influence can be tasted in dishes far beyond the Arabian Peninsula\, yet the remarkable story behind that influence is rarely told. \nIn The Influence of Arabian Food\, part of Sufra Time: An Immersive Arabian Dining Journey\, you’ll discover how ancient trade routes\, cultural exchange and human migration helped ingredients\, cooking techniques and culinary traditions cross continents. Follow the journeys of fragrant spices\, rice\, coffee\, citrus\, dates and other treasured foods as they moved through Arabia and into the wider world—transforming kitchens and connecting cultures along the way. \nThe evening also reveals a natural kinship between Arabian and Appalachian food traditions. Both were shaped by the land\, resourcefulness and recipes handed down through generations rather than written in cookbooks. In both cultures\, food is an expression of identity\, family and memory—and feeding a guest generously is one of the highest forms of hospitality. \nThrough delicious Arabian food\, dramatic storytelling\, vivid imagery and audience participation\, this immersive experience invites you to do more than learn about culinary history. You’ll taste it. \nCome hungry—and discover how Arabia helped shape the way the world eats\, one shared table at a time.

SUMMARY:APLR Presents: EVENING SHOW: Mdou Moctar
DESCRIPTION:APLR Presents: EVENING SHOW: Mdou Moctar \nFriday\, September 18th\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 7PM || Event 8PM \nMdou Moctar \nThere is a beauty in listening to music made in the spirit of energetic transformation. When the sounds transform the air and the listener. This record transports the listener into the heart of the music of Mdou Moctar. The blending of intention and motivation creates a burst of sound that embraces and shakes and invites one to dance! It invites one to breathe. It invites one to be in solidarity with the music. It invites one to be in touch with the human condition. What does it mean to be free in these times? Can the world be liberated from the colonial mindstate that has caused such harm and mistrust? Can we mourn our losses yet build anew to form something more astounding\, more fantastic? Funeral For Justice says we can. \nA sound that carries weight makes an impact. A sound that carries time transcends time. We are not only listening to music but we are living through it. We are living with it. We are living in it. The artist sees history and makes poetry from it for the present. Mdou Moctar’s Funeral For Justice requests your presence. Show up open to the celebration of life\, loved as it should be loved. Experience the exaltation and exuberance. The words speak of ascension\, awareness\, sorrow\, apathy\, knowing\, and growth. The guitars speak of power\, energy\, jubilation\, transcendency\, immediacy\, and tradition. The drums and percussion mark the pulse of now as well as a timeless dance that involves us all\, as it did those that came before us. The wires that carry the message feel alive with fire and purpose\, explosive with possibility. This “funeral” is an acknowledgment. This “funeral” is abundant. This “funeral” overflows into the street filled with dance. This “funeral” stretches late into the night\, kicking up the dirt\, with the hum of a generator\, an ever present member of the rhythm section. This “funeral” is a clarion call for reason and a belief that change is possible. \nSo join Mdou Moctar in this funeral for justice\, knowing rebirth is possible. A new justice is possible. With your voice\, your heart\, your dance\, your stomp\, a new justice is born. Mdou Moctar welcomes you with joy and open arms. Be here. Feel here and do\, alongside this music. Don’t stand alone\, join with others and do. Fight for liberation. Stand against oppression\, alongside this music and do! \nAll ages

DESCRIPTION:Art has the power to heal\, restore\, and reconnect us to what matters most.
