Plasma from\u202fwhole blood\u202fdonations made through the American Red Cross\u202fthat\u202ftest positive for COVID-19 antibodies may now help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. Eligible donors are encouraged to make an appointment\u202fto\u202fgive blood\u202fnow\u202fto help ensure\u202fcoronavirus\u202fpatients\u202fand others who depend on transfusions\u202fhave needed blood products this fall. Upcoming blood donation opportunities are available now through October 15 in various locations throughout Western North Carolina.<\/p>\n

In April, the Red Cross began collecting COVID-19 convalescent plasma from previously diagnosed individuals, who\u202fcould only give at one of approximately 170 Red Cross blood donation centers across the country. Convalescent plasma contains\u202fCOVID-19\u202fantibodies that\u202fmay\u202fhelp the most critical patients actively fighting this\u202fvirus. Whole blood\u202fdonations now made at any Red Cross blood drive or blood donation center\u202fcould\u202fbe helpful in this effort.<\/p>\n

\u201cDonations that come back positive for COVID-19 antibodies now undergo secondary testing to confirm antibody results, and that enables the Red Cross to then potentially use the plasma from those donations for\u202fCOVID-19\u202fpatients,\u201d says Dr. Erin Goodhue, executive medical director of direct patient care with\u202fthe Red Cross Biomedical Services. \u201cWith approximately 2% of the U.S. population\u202ftesting positive for COVID-19 antibodies, every donation is important to ensure\u202fpatients with coronavirus\u202fhave access to every treatment option available to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

About antibody testing<\/strong>
\nAntibody testing\u202fmay indicate\u202fif the donor\u2019s immune system has produced antibodies to\u202fthis\u202fcoronavirus, regardless of whether\u202fan\u202findividual\u202fexperienced COVID-19\u202fsymptoms.\u202fDonations\u202fare\u202ftested using samples pulled at the time of donation and sent to a testing laboratory where they will also undergo\u202froutine\u202finfectious disease\u202ftesting.<\/p>\n

COVID-19 antibody test results will be available\u202fwithin\u202fone to two weeks\u202fin the Red Cross Blood Donor App or donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org. A positive antibody test result does\u00a0not confirm infection or immunity. The Red Cross is not\u202ftesting donors to diagnose illness, referred to as a diagnostic test.<\/p>\n
