When it comes to houseguests, radio personality Sheridan Whiteside may be one of the worst ones imaginable. Written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart and set in the 1930s, The Man Who Came to Dinner <\/i>tells the story of an egotistical critic who spares no one from his rude behavior.<\/p>\n
Sheridan is on a trip with his secretary, Maggie Cutler. During a stay in Ohio, they\u2019re invited to dinner at the Stanleys\u2019 house. Upon arrival, however, Sheridan slips and breaks his hip. The couple does what they consider the polite thing and brings Sheridan into their home to heal. Chaos reigns over the next six weeks as Sheridan monopolizes the household, receives strange gifts from friends (cockroaches!), and runs up a $784 phone bill.<\/p>\n
Asheville Community Theatre presents the comedy April 8\u201324. If you\u2019re wondering if there\u2019s anything likeable about Sheridan, just ask actor Steven Turner who takes on the role. \u201cOh sure,\u201d says Steven. \u201cHe\u2019s very loyal (mostly) to his friends and celebrates their eccentricities and achievements. He\u2019s indomitable and unstoppable. And his zest for life is contagious.\u201d Other characters, however, have more to say.<\/p>\n
Ariel Casale, who plays Ms. Preen, told The Laurel<\/i>, \u201cMs. Preen is a no-nonsense nurse who loves her job \u2026 until she\u2019s given the job of taking care of Mr. Whiteside and becomes the target of his constant verbal harassment… He doesn\u2019t seem to appreciate her efforts and she, in her own way, gets back at him for all the emotional abuse he\u2019s throwing out.\u201d<\/p>\n
