When it comes to producing a full-length spring musical, The Learning Community (TLC) School in Black Mountain has it down to an art. Not only does the show involve all 75 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, but the parents also contribute their time and talents, from costume design and makeup to lighting and props. The annual tradition began in 2002 with Charlotte\u2019s Web<\/i>.<\/p>\n
From April 22\u201324, TLC School will produce Oliver!<\/i>, based on Charles Dickens\u2019 Oliver Twist<\/i>. The production will take place at Owens High School Auditorium where audience members are certain to enjoy such well-loved songs as \u201cFood Glorious Food,\u201d \u201cConsider Yourself,\u201d and \u201cI\u2019ll Do Anything.\u201d There will also be a silent auction and a raffle.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne thing I love about this piece is that it has some real complexity to it,\u201d says director Tom Tracy, who is also a parent alumnus and a language arts teacher at TLC School. \u201cIt\u2019s a story that has notable human conflict in it. It\u2019s also a story of hope and possibility inside of dismal circumstances during the 1800s as seen from the viewpoint of youth. The songs are so bright; young people finding hope. It\u2019s nice to pull from a piece of classic literature that shines with such promise and possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n
Parent-artists have worked together to create the magical sets, including Fagan\u2019s Lair, the workhouse, and other recognizable scenes from the story. Artist, parent, and set designer Ralston Fox Smith is joined by Asheville artists Monroe Moore, Spencer hero, and Libba Tracey. Monroe shares, \u201cWe take this pretty seriously because we want to do the best for the kids in our community\u2014both the ones on stage and the ones in the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n
