{"id":48307,"date":"2022-02-17T19:07:08","date_gmt":"2022-02-18T00:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/?p=48307"},"modified":"2022-02-17T19:07:56","modified_gmt":"2022-02-18T00:07:56","slug":"book-feature-chasing-the-smokies-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/arts\/literature\/book-feature-chasing-the-smokies-moon\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Feature: Chasing the Smokies Moon"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><em>Nancy East, Author<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Nancy East\u2019s interest in hiking and backpacking began while she was a student at Auburn University. \u201cI headed to the Smokies as often as I could,\u201d she said, \u201cand ended up taking my first job out of veterinary school in Waynesville.\u201d Today, among other accomplishments, she is a founding board member of the WNC Wilderness Fund, a Haywood County Search and Rescue team member and, she says, \u201ca firm believer that you\u2019re never too old to be what you might have been.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-48305\" src=\"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Book-Feature-2_-Chasing-the-Smokies-none-needed.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"385\" \/>Her debut book <em>Chasing the Smokies Moo<\/em>n is an account of a challenge she and a friend took on in 2020: to improve the speed record for hiking all 900-plus miles of trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The tragic death of a hiker in 2018 inspired the hike as a way to raise money for search and rescue. \u201cI hope readers take away a deeper understanding of how a hike can quickly turn fatal if they\u2019re not equipped with basic skills and minimal gear; that no matter their age or athletic abilities, they are stronger than they may feel or believe; and that walking through the woods is one of the best forms of meditation and therapy out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>East began outlining the book in her head as she hiked, taking brief notes on her phone. \u201cBut,\u201d she adds, \u201cthe majority of what I wrote in the book was indelibly etched in my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chasing the Smokies Moon, <em>November, 2021, nonfiction, softcover, $17.95, by Nancy East, and published by Headlamp Publishing, NC.
