Conserving Carolina\u2019s annual Habitat at Home photo contest encourages people to celebrate the nature around their home\u2014and to actively restore habitat for wild things.<\/p>\n

Denise Booher of Hendersonville was voted the grand prize winner in the 2021 contest.<\/p><\/div>\n

Nature isn\u2019t only meant for preserves and parks. It should be in the places we live, work and play. Whether it\u2019s a bobcat, butterfly, bird, or bee, show off what you\u2019re doing and what you\u2019re seeing around your home this spring! You can also submit photos from your school, house of worship, community garden, or other places in your community.<\/p>\n

The photo contest runs through May 15. Conserving Carolina is looking for photos or videos that show any of these three things:
\n1) Native plants in gardens or landscaping
\n2) Projects to improve habitat where you live
\n3) Wildlife that you see at or near your home<\/p>\n

Wildlife can include both small and large animals \u2014 anything from bugs to bears. Participants can enter as many times as desired during the contest.<\/p>\n

To enter, post your photo or video on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #habitatathome2022. It must be a public post. If you\u2019re not on social media, you can submit entries by email to\u00a0rose@conservingcarolina.org<\/a>. After the submission period ends on May 15, a panel of expert photographers will select five finalists. The contest winner will then be chosen through online voting.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re inspired by local farmer and educator,\u00a0Kim Bailey, who says, \u201cPlanting a seed is one of the most hopeful things you can do. And when you get the plant and the butterfly actually comes and lays her eggs on it or uses it for nectar, you see,\u00a0\u2018It worked!\u2019\u00a0<\/em>You\u2019re asking people to do something that helps the environment but you\u2019re also giving them a way to experience joy and beauty \u2026 Everyone wants to do something to help, but it\u2019s a happy thing that you\u2019re doing and it doesn\u2019t feel like a sacrifice. It\u2019s contagious. It\u2019s an empowering thing and it\u2019s a joyful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The grand prize is\u00a0a two-hour professional landscape consultation donated by noted local landscape architect, Mark Byington of\u00a0Byington Landscape Architects, known for his emphasis on sustainable landscapes.\u00a0All other finalists will win garden-themed prizes donated by local businesses including\u00a0New Leaf Garden Market,\u00a0Raymond\u2019s Garden Center, and Milkweed Meadows Farm.<\/p>\n
