endlings<\/em><\/h2>\n

Saluda songwriter Michael Flynn chose endlings<\/em> as the name for his five-track EP, released in February, after reflecting on how many of his fellow musicians had moved on to other careers. Endlings<\/em> are creatures who exist as the last of their kind. \u201cIt\u2019s not entirely apt though,\u201d Flynn says, \u201cbecause arranging and performing these songs with my bandmates (Jonathan Gray and Hannah Seng) has been one of the most creatively inspiring projects I\u2019ve ever been a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"In December, Flynn was named winner of the 20th annual NewSong Music Competition held in Asheville. Finalists hailed from across the country and had been winnowed from 1,000 entries overall. Flynn\u2019s accomplishment came after years of devotion to music beginning with mandatory piano lessons in third grade. \u201cSometime in the sixth grade, my friends and I decided we\u2019d start a band,\u201d he says. \u201cI volunteered to play keyboard, and I\u2019ve been lost to respectable society ever since.\u201d By high school, he was playing in regional bands and writing songs.<\/p>\n

He calls his style \u201cAmericana-adjacent,\u201d and says it appeals to listeners who appreciate lyrics. \u201cI listened to a lot of folk music growing up, so I take the lyrics real seriously,\u201d says Flynn, \u201cbut as a piano-based guy I feel more musically at home among \u201880s pop and old Casio keyboards than guitars and mandolins. I don\u2019t really make the kind of music that grabs you by the collar and demands that you listen, but if you do listen there\u2019s a good chance I\u2019ll get my claws in you nonetheless.\u201d<\/p>\n

A particular favorite on endlings is the first track, \u201cWishing Tree,\u201d co-written with Seng, who also plays banjo and sings. \u201cIt\u2019s one of those kinds of songs I\u2019ve always wanted to write, but never thought I could,\u201d says Flynn. \u201cPart traditional, part film score, ornery lyrics with some heavy metaphors\u2014it has lots of elements of things I love.\u201d<\/p>\n
