{"id":58449,"date":"2023-04-21T14:22:03","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T18:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/?p=58449"},"modified":"2023-04-21T14:22:36","modified_gmt":"2023-04-21T18:22:36","slug":"book-feature-collect-call-to-my-mother","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/arts\/book-feature-collect-call-to-my-mother\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Feature: <em>Collect Call to My Mother<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em>Essays on Love, Grief, and Getting a Good Night\u2019s Sleep<\/em><\/h3>\n<h4>Lori Horvitz, Author<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-58446\" src=\"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Book-Feature-1_-Collect-Call-none-needed-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"386\" \/>Author Asheville Lori Horvitz has followed up her award-winning first collection of memoir-essays, <em>The Girls of Usually<\/em> (2015), with a new memoir, <em>Collect Call to My Mother<\/em>. \u201cAs most writers would attest to, we write about what we\u2019re obsessed with,\u201d Horvitz, a professor of English at UNC Asheville, says. \u201cMy obsessions include my mother (whom I never really knew in a deep way, but by writing about her, I found compassion for her, and myself), finding a healthy relationship, and understanding and accepting my identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The book portrays her experiences as a queer Jewish New Yorker living in the South, with many of the essays notably humorous. \u201cAt times, I don\u2019t even know my work is funny until I read it to an audience,\u201d she says. \u201cI was raised on making sense of sadness\/tragedy through humor, so I suppose it\u2019s in my blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Horvitz focused on poetry for her MFA and teaches fiction at UNCA, but chose the memoir-essay form because of its resemblance to short stories. \u201cYou can read it in one sitting, and there\u2019s a narrative arc in each piece,\u201d she says. \u201cMy hope for the collection is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collect Call to My Mother: Essays on Love, Grief, and Getting a Good Night\u2019s Sleep,<em> February, 2023, memoir, paperback, $18, by Lori Horvitz, and published by New Meridian Arts.
