\"\"Danny Bernstein grew up an \u201cinner city child,\u201d she says, and became interested in the outdoors through \u201cY\u201d camps. When she and her husband were living in NJ, they found a local hiking club, began going on weekend hikes and were hooked. Throughout the years, they hiked the Appalachian Trail in sections, completing it before they moved to Asheville in 2001. By that time, they had already discovered Carolina Mountain Club (CMC).<\/p>\n

With her involvement through the years as a trail maintainer and hike leader, and having written several outdoors books and hiking guides, Bernstein was the natural pick when members wanted to commemorate CMC\u2019s centennial with a written history. Her last book was DuPont Forest: A History.<\/em> \u201cI really enjoyed digging into the history of the Forest and also, of course, hiking it,\u201d says Bernstein. \u201cNow I felt it was going to be as much fun with CMC\u2014and it was. A centennial is a big deal. We are the oldest hiking club in the South, older than the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.\u201d<\/p>\n
