Join River Arts District artists on August 12 for the monthly Second Saturday celebration, a time to visit studios and galleries, talk with artists, see demonstrations and, most importantly, add to your collection of locally created fine art and craft. Bike lanes, sidewalks, parking lots and trolleys provide a variety of options for getting there and for moving throughout the mile-long district.<\/p>\n

Blooming Roses. Heather Clements, artist<\/p><\/div>\n

At the Wedge, artist Philip DeAngelo often celebrates Second Saturdays by inviting guest artists to his studio. \u201cSometimes a guest is brand new so they are getting to experience putting on a show and interacting with gallery-goers for the first time, and other months we bring in friends with known bodies of work,\u201d says DeAngelo. \u201cIn all cases we hope we are helping each of them\u2014and the public\u2014to experience the arts in a positive way in our space. Our Second Saturday guest artist for August, Greg Vineyard, is an old friend, and he loves talking to visitors about his ever-evolving illustration work and about the arts in general over his mixed-media in-progress on the worktable.\u201d The studio will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.<\/p>\n

At Trackside Studios, from 1\u20133 p.m., Kate Colclaser will demonstrate encaustic collage. \u201cI work in hot wax, namely beeswax,\u201d Colclaser says. \u201cI use various other mediums and colorants in creating the pieces\u2014watercolor, pan pastel, oil stick, fiber and paper. To keep it simple, I will demo using paper to create a collage, then applying wax and colorants to create an image.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also at Trackside Studios, in the Atrium Gallery, an artist reception for Tails from the Forest Floor<\/em> will be held from 2\u20136 p.m. on Second Saturday. The solo exhibition features work by illustrator Chalkley Matlack, who uses pen and ink drawing and pyrography, a woodburning technique, to bring his subjects to life. The exhibition runs through August 31.<\/p>\n

Additional Second Saturday happenings include encaustic demonstrations by Dee Santorini from 12\u20134 p.m. and a raku display by Bruce Santorini from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., both at 310 Art at Riverview Station; and The Great Reveal<\/em> at Pink Dog Creative from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring brand-new work by 11 artists, each in their respective studios: Patti Anastasi, Tim Barnwell, Ralph Burns, Lucy Cobos, Liz Hosier, Sandi McAslan, May Rhea, Viola Spells, Emelie Weber Wade and No\u00ebl Yovovich.<\/p>\n
