{"id":66653,"date":"2024-02-09T15:45:38","date_gmt":"2024-02-09T20:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/?p=66653"},"modified":"2024-02-09T15:45:38","modified_gmt":"2024-02-09T20:45:38","slug":"area-nonprofit-working-wheels-provides-reliable-transportation-for-those-in-need","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/lifestyle\/area-nonprofit-working-wheels-provides-reliable-transportation-for-those-in-need\/","title":{"rendered":"Area Nonprofit Working Wheels Provides Reliable Transportation for Those in Need"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rooted in the idea that affordable, reliable transportation options can truly transform the lives of working families, nonprofit Working Wheels has been operating in our region for more than eight years. \u201cCars are the missing piece in many people\u2019s struggle to create a sustainable existence for themselves,\u201d says executive director Jamie Beasley. \u201cThe need for dependable cars and affordable repairs is overwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66655\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66655\" class=\"wp-image-66655\" src=\"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Working-Wheels-ww_shuvonda_harper_-resizsed-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"331\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-66655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shuvonda Harper<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Working Wheels partners with 17 local social service agencies to identify individuals who are facing a transportation barrier. Clients must be employed, and many of them are essential workers with families to support. Clients are served through one of two programs: The Vehicle Repair Program, which provides discounted repairs for people who can\u2019t afford to fix a vehicle they already own; and The Vehicle Purchase Program, which provides reliable vehicles at an affordable price.<\/p>\n<p>Shuvonda Harper is a social justice doula, co-founder of Southside Community Farm and a single mother of two teenagers. Her crucial community work and daily life was complicated by a lack of transportation until she was referred to Working Wheels in 2022. The organization made it possible for her to purchase a deeply discounted, pre-owned Pontiac Vibe that has not only made her work easier but also allowed her to contribute even more to her community. \u201cSometimes people have to catch a couple of buses to get groceries or go out to the VA Hospital, which can add hours to their trip,\u201d Harper says. \u201cThat can be hard for older people, so sometimes I just offer that support of transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like so many nonprofits, the need for these services far outpaces Working Wheels\u2019 capacity.
