Robert Turner, artist<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cReflecting on Robert Turner\u2019s approach to teaching, his students recall that he was thoughtful, observant and perceptive in pointing out the precise aspect of a work that needed more attention,\u201d says Alice Sebrell, director of preservation at BMCM+AC. \u201cHis method was that of a wise, friendly guide, sharing knowledge and experience with care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turner arrived at Black Mountain College in 1949 at the college\u2019s invitation. He worked with student architect Paul Williams to design the Potshop and stayed until 1951, when he moved with his family to a farm in New York. \u201cTurner converted the property\u2019s dairy barn into a studio,\u201d says Sebrell. \u201cHe made his own clay and glazes, used a gas-fired kiln and became a production potter making functional work.\u201d Turner also taught sculpture and pottery at Alfred University for more than 20 years until his retirement in 1979.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70766\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70766\" class=\"wp-image-70766\" src=\"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Black-Mountain-College-Museum-Robert-Turners-hands.-Photo-by-Vollmer-Hetherington-copy-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"363\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-70766\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Robert Turner\u2019s hands<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The artist was deeply impacted by his travels in the southwestern US and in Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa. \u201cTurner credited specific indigenous groups like the Ashanti and Navajo people for much of the work he created from 1971-1980, and expressed how the ability to \u2018explore\u2019 and travel the world was transformative on every level,\u201d says Sebrell. \u201cThe shapes and names of Turner\u2019s forms reveal the impact of his encounters with other cultures, new landscapes and natural forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition will include work by some of Turner\u2019s students and colleagues at BMC, Alfred University and Penland as well as work by contemporary ceramic artists whose work fits within the context of the show.<\/p>\n<p><em>Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center is located at 120 College Street, Asheville.
