{"id":74955,"date":"2024-09-21T13:39:58","date_gmt":"2024-09-21T17:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/?p=74955"},"modified":"2024-09-21T13:39:58","modified_gmt":"2024-09-21T17:39:58","slug":"book-feature-scorched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/arts\/book-feature-scorched\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Book Feature:<\/strong> <em>Scorched<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Don Silver, Author<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-74957\" src=\"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Book-Feature-1-Scorched_Front-copy-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>Asheville author Don Silver\u2019s second novel, <em>Scorched<\/em>, draws upon his knowledge of the music industry gleaned from time spent as a musician, talent scout and record producer, among other professions. \u201cI\u2019m a big music fan, so music from the 1970s is referenced throughout the first half of the book,\u201d Silver says. \u201cThere\u2019s a bit of a parallel between producing music and writing a novel: they both blend creativity and discipline; vision and organization; commitment and revision\u2014which, at least compared to many activities, make them both pretty inefficient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The novel began for him with a character that Silver found familiar and strange at the same time. \u201cOnce I had a clear sense of him and could guess what he thought and would say, I found a point of view and setting,\u201d he says, \u201cPhiladelphia in the 1970s, where I grew up, along with a cast of characters who, I suppose, are composites of people I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silver\u2019s first book, <em>Backward-Facing Man<\/em>, was also a coming-of-age story that followed its characters into middle age, but <em>Scorched<\/em>, he says, morphs into a thriller as its character tries\u2014and fails\u2014to outrun his past. \u201cIt\u2019s been likened to Stephen King\u2019s <em>The Stand<\/em> and to <em>The Catcher in the Rye,<\/em>\u201d he adds. \u201cI\u2019m interested in characters and the experiences of life, but I love a good thriller with high stakes and deadlines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Scorched, May, 2024, literary fiction, paperback $12.99, eBook $6.99, by Don Silver, and published by Holloway Press.
