Julie Willan, artist<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hendersonville artist Julie Willan was recently commissioned to create a portrait of the English singer-songwriter Adele to be sold as a poster during the performer\u2019s concert residency in Munich, Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The way the commission came about was unique and serendipitous. Willan and her wife Lisa attended an Adele concert in Las Vegas in August of 2023. \u201cWe\u2019re both huge fans of Adele and the concert was a perfect way to celebrate Lisa\u2019s birthday that weekend,\u201d says Willan. \u201cI wanted to make it extra special, so I got us seats near the section where Adele would walk by during her performance of \u2018When We Were Young.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Willan is a fumage artist who creates drawings made from the soot of a burning candle. She used her technique to create a portrait of Adele\u2019s dog, Louie, which she handed to the artist as she passed by during the concert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdele brought the drawing on stage and shared a heartfelt story about her deep love for Louie,\u201d says Willan. \u201cIt was an incredibly touching moment, especially for anyone who\u2019s ever loved a pet like family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A month later, Willan was contacted by Adele\u2019s management team. \u201cAt first, I thought it was a prank,\u201d she says. \u201cBut Lisa did some digging and confirmed that it was, in fact, legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A commission of such scale is exciting for any artist, but especially so for Willan as a huge fan of Adele.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was beyond excited and couldn\u2019t believe what was happening,\u201d she says. \u201cIt felt like a dream! At the time, I had been struggling with an artist\u2019s block\u2014feeling unmotivated and stuck creatively.
