The Asheville Ballet kicks off its 2016\u201317 Season with \u201cFall into Dance: An Autumn Harvest 2.\u201d The production will be held September 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. outdoors in downtown Asheville on the stage of Roger McGuire Park. Bring your lawn chair and blankets and enjoy an hour of dance and live music. The concert is free as part of the company\u2019s community outreach program.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving this show outside is really an experience,\u201d says Ann Dunn, artistic director. \u201cTo dance with the breeze on your face and the sky overhead, it really makes for a magical evening.\u201d<\/p>\n

This summer seven choreographers create an eclectic mix of dance styles ranging from classical ballet to contemporary, and in moods from humorous to thought provoking. \u201cWe want to introduce people to other forms of dance that they might not be familiar with or wouldn\u2019t reach out for themselves,\u201d says Dunn. \u201cAnd it also allows them a non-traditional space to experience a meaningful and entertaining time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dunn presents two original works set to live music, Beethoven\u2019s \u201cMoonlight Sonata\u201d and an original rock\/jazz percussion solo\u2014\u201cWalking the Streets\u201d\u2014which expresses the joy and compulsion of moving through urban landscapes, with no particular destination or goal other than being present and watching. To perform this piece, Dunn welcomes its composer, jazz-fusion drummer Jeff Snipe, who just wrapped up touring with the Jerry Garcia Orchestral Experience.<\/p>\n

The evening features dance soloist Megan Jones Medford, who has recently rejoined her old company after moving back to Asheville from a prestigious career in New York City. \u201cI am thrilled to be back dancing in my hometown,\u201d says Medford, who also teaches dance. \u201cI\u2019m ecstatic to share this beautiful outdoor stage with such talented artists.”<\/p>\n

Asheville Ballet is North Carolina\u2019s oldest non-profit ballet company. First incorporated in 1963, the company has created and presented work in Asheville every year since. The season will continue with \u201cThe Nutcracker\u201d December 8\u201311, and \u201cSpring into Dance: A Movement Bouquet\u201d May 26\u201327, both at Diana Wortham Theatre.<\/p>\n
