The exhibition presents the work of four Puerto Rican artists: mixed media sculptors Ada del Pilar Ortiz and Luis Gabriel Sanabria; ceramic sculptor Jaime Su\u00e1rez; and ceramic sculptor and Mitchell County resident Cristina C\u00f3rdova, who curated the show.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_80388\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80388\" class=\"wp-image-80388\" src=\"https:\/\/thelaurelofasheville.com\/updatestage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Penland-Gallery-penland-puente-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"539\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-80388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Madre. Cristina C\u00f3rdova, artist<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cEl puente\u201d means \u201cthe bridge,\u201d referring to a metaphorical bridge between Puerto Rico and the US mainland and the idea that artists are part of that connection in what C\u00f3rdova calls \u201ca continuous loop of communal encounters and mutual influence, followed by a momentary respite in which the encounters are assimilated and transformed within the artistic community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>C\u00f3rdova\u2019s large, low-relief wall sculptures depict human forms along with environmental elements. The pieces explore an area of human experience where, C\u00f3rdova says, \u201cmind seeks myth.\u201d The artist considers Puerto Rico her home, but says that during her years in the US she has found the means of expressing her homeland through her art. \u201cI exist between these places\u2014rooted in one, shaped by the other\u2014grateful for the creative communities that have carried me forward,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>With sculptures cast using architectural elements from abandoned homes in Puerto Rico, Ortiz seeks to address issues in the territory today, including economic challenges, gentrification and the devastation of natural disasters. \u201cEach sculpture serves as a vessel for fragmented stories,\u201d she says, \u201crepresenting both personal and cultural loss while honoring the spaces where life once unfolded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sanabria calls the artwork\/installation he contributed for this exhibition <em>Los Guerreros<\/em>. The costumes of the three sculptural figures are based on carnival characters reimagined as warriors and include elements found and created in Puerto Rico such as shells, handmade rope and traditional textiles. \u201cWe are re-created and reidentified here,\u201d the artist says, \u201cwearing our land and moving pieces of it into the \u2018mainland.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For pieces in this exhibition, Su\u00e1rez draws upon works from his series Lost Cities that use clay to explore some of the themes that have developed throughout his career: ritual objects, eroded landscapes, ruins and archaeology. \u201cAll come together with an interest in texture, which I have realized has become my medium of expression and what has taken me into material investigation beyond my starting point in ceramics,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Penland Gallery curator Kathryn Gremley notes that it\u2019s worth reflecting on the generational connections among the four artists. \u201cJaime Su\u00e1rez played a significant role in Cristina Cord\u00f3va\u2019s early arts education in Puerto Rico, possibly influencing Cord\u00f3va\u2019s ongoing dedication to creating study opportunities for Puerto Rican artists,\u201d she says. \u201cAda del Pilar Ortiz was invited to participate in Penland School\u2019s winter residency based on a recommendation from Cord\u00f3va. As emerging artists, Ortiz and Luis Gabriel Sanabria have each engaged in prestigious art residencies around the world and bring those experiences back to Puerto Rico, potentially inspiring others to pursue similar opportunities.
