The Salmagundi Gallery in downtown Waynesville is launching a new monthly series with its September exhibition, Construct\/Deconstruct<\/em>, on view from Tuesday, September 2, through Tuesday, September 30. The show features six artists working in collage, clay and mixed media, and it will be celebrated with an opening reception on Friday, September 5, from 6\u20139 p.m. during Art After Dark.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe monthly series was born out of a desire to create a responsive curatorial rhythm\u2014one that continuously highlights the evolving creativity within our region and beyond,\u201d says gallery owner Jerry Jackson. \u201cBy bringing together both new and stable artists, we aim to foster deeper creative connections and dialogue. Each exhibition offers a fresh opportunity for the community to engage with a diverse range of voices, materials and themes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Construct\/Deconstruct<\/em> features work by Jackson, Jason Pierson, Patricia Hinton, Will Hinton, Margaret Roberts and Holly Roberts. The inaugural exhibition focuses on artistic imperfection, improvisation and the act of building something new from fragments. \u201cCollage and assemblage resonate strongly in contemporary art because they mirror the fragmented, fast-changing nature of today\u2019s world,\u201d says Jackson. \u201cThe act of layering and reassembling becomes a visual metaphor for transformation\u2014reminding us that beauty and meaning can emerge from the broken, the found and the reimagined.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia Hinton and Pierson are both new to the Salmagundi Gallery community. \u201cWhen selecting new voices, I look for artists who bring a unique visual language but are also in conversation\u2014either thematically or materially\u2014with the broader community of makers we represent,\u201d says Jackson. \u201cPatricia Hinton\u2019s work stood out for its rich use of shape and pattern in her collage and painting, evoking both formal control and spontaneous fragmentation. Jason Pierson\u2019s small-scale, wabi-sabi inspired collages are deeply meditative, exploring beauty through imperfection and minimalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though the artists\u2019 voices are distinct, Jackson sees a common thread. \u201cI hope visitors feel invited into a conversation\u2014one that\u2019s less about polished perfection and more about process, tension and discovery,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s a shared exploration of how materials can be taken apart and put back together to form something new.\u201d<\/p>\n
