Co-founders Marc DiFrancia and Mike Cooper weren\u2019t looking to rescue horses, but they came across one\u2014Annie\u2014that desperately needed a home, so they provided one. Courtesy of the Missed Path Sanctuary<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Missed Path also offers opportunities for humans to interact with their rescued horses through monthly \u201cOpen Horses,\u201d an elderly visitation program called \u201cForever Seen\u201d and a \u201cReading with Rescues\u201d program for children and schools. \u201cThe child sits opposite the horse and reads them their favorite storybook,\u201d says Cooper. \u201cTeachers tell us that these kids come back to the classroom with a renewed confidence around reading aloud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sanctuary\u2019s work is grounded in the belief that horses reflect and regulate human emotion. \u201cThey meet you where you are,\u201d says DiFrancia. \u201cThey can help regulate your emotional state and bring you closer to their level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DiFrancia recalls an interaction between a blind horse named Daisy and David, a visitor with autism. \u201cDavid chose to groom Daisy while blindfolded, stepping into her world rather than asking her to step into his,\u201d Cooper says. \u201cAs he brushed her, Daisy stayed soft and present, and the interaction became a shared act of faith and connection. At one point David quietly said, \u2018I can feel her trust through the brush.\u2019 That story captures the heart of the sanctuary beautifully\u2014two beings meeting without posturing; finding confidence and connection through softness, trust and presence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sanctuary was self-funded for many years before becoming a true nonprofit in 2024. After discovering the sanctuary close to her home in Candler, Susan Kern became a volunteer. \u201cJust being around the horses gives me a sense of purpose and peace that the rest of the world does not offer right now,\u201d she says. \u201cSanctuaries do not run on their own\u2014it really takes people of many different talents to keep one operating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The need for support is ongoing, especially given the lifespan of the animals. \u201cWe\u2019re very aware that we\u2019re caring for animals who, given the right conditions, can live for 30 to 40 years,\u201d says DiFrancia. \u201cA big part of our long-term vision is making sure that, whatever happens to us, the animals in our care continue to be looked after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe connection we experience with them\u2014the moments of trust, softness and presence\u2014they give more than they take,\u201d Cooper says of the horses. \u201cThis mission matters because people need places where healing is actually experienced, not just talked about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Learn more and donate at <a href=\"http:\/\/MissedPathSanctuary.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MissedPathSanctuary.org<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Missed Path Sanctuary, an equine rescue charity in Pisgah National Forest, came into being more by accident than by design.
