Widely regarded as a landmark of free jazz\, the album remains one of the most daring and spiritually charged recordings of Coltrane’s career\, and one of the last studio statements he would make. \nFor this performance\, saxophonist Steve Alford of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and drummer Jeff Arnal of the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) will take on Coltrane and Ali’s roles\, bringing their own voices to the duo’s open\, unaccompanied dialogue. \nFollowing the performance\, Alford will speak about Coltrane’s music and legacy\, and Arnal — who knew Rashied Ali personally — will share stories about Ali and discuss the practice of free drumming. \nThe evening is a collaboration between URSA Asheville\, AyurPrana Listening Room\, and the two musicians\, offered free to the public as part of URSA’s mission to bring first-rate jazz to Asheville. DESCRIPTION:APLR Presents: Croz Boyce – Featuring Avey Tare & Geologist from Animal Collective \nTuesday\, September 8th\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room \n312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6PM || Show 7PM \nCroz Boyce \n**What if 40 minutes of instrumental music made by two friends passing files across state lines could capture the range of human experience\, or at least a disproportionate chunk of it—worry and camaraderie\, hope and frustration\, tenderness and absurdity?** \nThat is the question that steadily emerges across the nine tracks of the self-titled debut from Croz Boyce\, the duo of two musicians who have made some of the last quarter-century’s most inquisitive music: Dave Portner (Avey Tare) and Brian Weitz (Geologist) of Animal Collective. \nBuds and collaborators for so long that it seems they can have deep exchanges without a word—or\, in this case\, a shared physical space—Portner and Weitz cry and hug and crack up (good) and crack up (bad) as a pair here. A record of sweet or fretful acoustic strums and electronics that give every scene color and depth\, *Croz Boyce* feels like a celebration of friendship\, of the chance to share a lifetime together even if from a distance. \nHere is some requisite biographical information for the first or third paragraph of your record review\, depending on the kind of outline you prefer: \nFive years ago\, Animal Collective released a track called “Brown Thrasher\,” part of a massive charitable compendium called *For the Birds*. It was a curious little drift\, single acoustic notes acting like opened windows for rays of electronic sunshine. To divulge a little liner-notes data\, that was just Portner and Weitz\, working through their mutual adoration for a springtime idyll. \nThe two liked the partnership and\, as the rest of their main quartet was busy with other projects\, decided to keep going. Starting in early 2023\, and almost without exception\, Portner would write a guitar theme in his Blue Ridge redoubt and send it to Weitz in the heart of D.C. He’d react to each instrumental and send it back. Aside from a shared mixing session in rural North Carolina and another in Baltimore with Animal Collective’s Josh Dibb\, that’s how easily *Croz Boyce* came together—two longtime pals passing the time by making music together. \nBut the best way to hear *Croz Boyce*\, really\, is to forget the backstory for 40 minutes\, to discard notions of why this guitar tone or that rhythmic relationship might sound familiar. Instead\, simply listen and feel: What do these songs remind you of or make you aspire to? \nHere are some possible interpretations\, all but certainly incorrect in the merged mind of Weitz and Portner but valid nevertheless. \nOpener “Hanging Out with a Blueberry Pop” first feels like lounging on a riverbank with your crew\, maybe laughing as you pass a joint around\, baking in the sun; the midsection is the splish-splash of finally jumping in\, too giddy to care about the current. \nMaybe it’s just the name at work\, but “Towson Acid” maps the edge of oblivion where even the plainest of facts don’t seem certain\, where reality refracts into a dozen different images\, where even the drums you hear in the distance are maybe hallucinatory phantoms. \nAnd is closer “Banana Pudding” only these two homies messing with each other\, the space between the slow strums and the wildly teasing electronics intended to make one another (and\, hey\, us) chuckle? It works. \nBut it’s not all laughs and lounging by the water. At least half of *Croz Boyce* feels like a wordless meditation on these anxious times\, on the endless bubbling up of bad headlines and counting down of the doomsday clock. \n“Father Karras\,” which Weitz actually started\, suggests two hands nervously rubbed together\, its string scrapes and warped synthesizer lines and Derek Bailey guitar staking out a landscape of uncertainty. \nAnd “Steven’s Sunshine Rejected” is kind of a beautiful bummer\, isn’t it? Portner’s down-tuned guitar and forlorn slide lines shape a gray playground for Weitz’s electronics\, which move this way and that like gusts of wind. When the pace picks up in the back half\, though\, it feels like two people who simply trust one another\, reaching together for something a little better. \nTo reiterate\, this could\, of course\, all be wrong. Take this music on a hike or a walk or a lazy riverside day. Listen. Decide for yourself. \nBack before Animal Collective was really called Animal Collective\, the goal was for that loose confederation of close friends to make music together as time and personnel and circumstance allowed. Like jazz musicians showing up for sessions\, they’d slap the name of whoever played on the cover. Branding needs intervened and\, well\, we have been blessed with approximately a quarter-century of Animal Collective. But the idea remains\, as every member of that band has always moved as a perpetual free agent. \nWeitz and Portner were going to call this music *Geologist and Avey Tare*\, but they began this project around the time that David Crosby died. A Dropbox folder named “Croz Boys” mutated into the handle *Croz Boyce*—not a tribute to Crosby’s music at all\, but maybe an unintentional tribute to the idea that there are lots of worse ways to pass your life than making music with buds. \nAgain\, though\, that could all be wrong. \nAll ages\nEnding Time is an estimate\nTickets only sold through DICE. His mother received some early training in the Sitar and vocal music. However\, both his parents were avid music listeners and had a large collection of LPs and other recordings of classical music at home. His siblings and cousins were all learning Indian Classical music of some form by the time Soumya was a little boy and with lessons on the tabla\, so began Soumya’s initiation into Indian classical music. He turned to playing the Sarod when he was eleven under the tutelage of the highly respected Pt. Samarendranath Sikdar\, a senior disciple of the late Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra of the Shahjahanpur Gharana. For nearly thirty years he has received extensive training under his guru in a multitude of north Indian Ragas\, some of which are very rare and unique to his Gharana. \nHis solid technique and thorough grounding in the roots of his own music notwithstanding\, his interests also lie in exploring the commonalities of North Indian Classical music with other music styles. \nHis playing style has been greatly influenced by the likes of his guru and other masters of his Gharana. It highlights a perfect blend between the Rababiya and Gayaki styles that is unique to the Shahjahanpur Gharana. He is both a purist\, who likes to maintain the authentic forms of the Ragas as passed down the generations of Ustads (maestros)\, and at the same time\, he likes to experiment with other forms of Indian as well as world music\, to find common strands of melodic expression. \nSoumya blossomed as a young artist on All India Radio Calcutta between 1990 and 1995. During a brief stint in Australia for a couple of years in the nineties while pursuing his MBA\, he truly established himself as a mature instrumentalist\, and also began to collaborate with other forms of world music. He performed live with a Flamenco dancer in a production that combined the gypsy roots of the dance with Latin American percussion\, Middle Eastern vocals and Indian Classical instrumental music. He returned to Australia in 2000 and 2011\, giving concerts\, lecture demonstrations and workshops. \nFor nearly two decades\, Soumya has been performing throughout the US\, as well as touring Australia and Mexico. He has performed in major cities such as Cleveland\, New York\, Princeton\, Seattle\, and his home town of Washington DC\, drawing packed audiences and earning rave reviews. In addition to pure Hindustani he continues to work with other music genres such Classical Carnatic (south Indian)\, flamenco\, jazz and latin American percussion. His recent concert and interview at the Library of Congress has gone into the archives of this prestigious institution. Other performances of note\, include Hindustani-Carnatic Jugalbandi at the Embassy of India in Washington DC\, a collaboration with Ghazal in a program series titled From Ghalib to Gulzar\, and a fusion project combining Rabindrasangeet (Tagore songs)\, Hindusthani classical music\, classical Jazz\, and West African percussion in a concert titled ‘Sea Thy Melody’. \nSoumya balances his busy music schedule alongside a full-time career in banking and risk management. In addition to performances\, he also teaches a number of students of Sarod and other stringed instruments\, passing the tradition of the Shahjahanpur Gharana to the next generation. For acclaimed harpist and songwriter Mikaela Davis’ new album\, Graceland Way (due TK via Kill Rock Stars)\, that singularity was a hillside home in Chevy Chase Canyon\, a spot nestled in Los Angeles County where time slowed\, the world fell away\, and Davis could create from a sense of warmth and deep attentiveness. The “canyon country” epic born of that care ties a neo-western future back to the lineage of Laurel Canyon\, the mythos of Elvis’s Graceland\, and Paul Simon’s restless reinvention—a place where Davis can explore the fragile balance of light and dark\, grace and struggle\, rose and thorn\, as well as the mystical power found at their nexus. \nThe record’s musical big bang originated at the nexus of UHF Studio\, where Davis and noted guitarist John Lee Shannon\, co-wrote the record and co-produced alongside longtime collaborator Dan Horne. As the album’s story of an unnamed antihero navigating life in a failing world\, her harp\, his guitar\, and their joint melodies weave a mystic depth. That’s immediately evident from the opening track “(Looking Through) Rose Colored Glasses”\, a harp glissando burst functioning like a blissful wormhole to a new universe where dark Western tones come aided by Kurt G. Johnson’s pedal steel guitar and transformative harmonies from guest vocalists Madison Cunningham and Tim Heidecker. But even in this pained origin story\, Davis’ glittering\, opalescent voice and evocative harp find a depth of beauty. \nThat duality is then immediately challenged in “Nothin’s On The Radio”\, where the antihero arrives in a city devoid of meaning\, the dystopia of modern homogenized radio writ large. “It already feels dystopic living in a world today where radio stations are all owned by a handful of corporations\, all playing the same artists. Gone are the days when the radio was a way to bring people together\, to amplify the voices of freaks and weirdos from all corners of the world\,” she says. “I was fortunate to grow up in the last years of the golden age of FM radio\, and being able to tune into this magical world far beyond my own was a transformative experience. Hearing artists like Sheryl Crow and Vanessa Carlton coming through the car stereo is what made me want to write songs and play music in the first place.” \nAs the album progresses and the story continues\, Davis and her compatriots explore magic and mysticism on “11:11” and the haunting darkness of “Mizmoon”. Cass McCombs wrote the latter\, rattling percussion and Davis’ harp low end giving way to slippery shadows of violin. “When Cass first sent over the track\, it was the coolest thing I’d ever heard\,” Davis says. “The music and lyrics create such an ominous mood and I could imagine how the harp would carry the song right away.” Elsewhere\, Wednesday vocalist Karly Hartzman contributes to “Junk Love”\, an exploration of knowingly filling an empty space with meaningless physicality. Across Graceland Way’s\, Davis’ harp masterfully powers the wide variety of soundscapes\, taking on an ecstatic range of emotional color. “At the end of the journey\, the place you were destined for all along isn’t even a place\, it’s a state of mind: Graceland Way\,” Davis says. “It’s all interconnected and the universe balances itself. You need the dark to see the light\, and the most beauty usually happens where the two meet.” \nNic Panken \nBorn in Brooklyn and living in Kingston\, NY\, Nic Panken has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe\, performing on NPR’s Tiny Desk\, at Newport Folk Festival and Austin City Limits as lead singer in NYC band Spirit Family Reunion. His debut solo record Near Divine or Merely Rhyme came out in April 2026\, co-produced with multi-instrumentalist Jared Samuel (Kevin Morby)\, and featuring guest musicians Mat Davidson (Twain) and Austin Vaughn (Cass McCombs) among others.

DESCRIPTION:APLR Presents: The Animeros \nThursday\, July 23rd\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6PM || Event 7PM \nThe Animeros \nWith musical notes that span well beyond genres like bolero\, psychedelic\, and cumbia\, The Animeros not only make their audience hit the dance floor\, but they also invite their listeners and tastemakers alike to a glimpse of their rich cultural upbringing. \nThe group who is made up of Nick Tozzo (drummer and percussionist)\, Nicolas Sanchez (bassist)\, and Mauro Lopez (guitarist) craft a genre-blending sound that drifts between the lush jungles of Colombia\, the palm-lined streets of 1960s coastal Mexico\, and the dusty cantinas of West Texas. \nSanchez’s Colombian roots\, growing up listening to his parents’ beloved salsa and cumbia; Lopez’s parents’ Mexican and American discography\, which spanned from traditional Tejano to improvised jazz; and Tozzo’s love for jazz and salsa music\, the latter stemming from his college years\, leading him to study and live in Colombia to experience music greats first-handedly. All of this\, paired with their undeniable chemistry and meshed with their now hometown Austin’s innovative creative sounds has led them to create the unique sonic movement that is The Animeros\, a name inspired by Colombian shamans who would usher lost souls to their peace. \nTheir journey took an unexpected turn when their music reached the ears of Dan Auerbach\, the Grammy Award winning producer\, songwriter\, and frontman of The Black Keys. Auerbach first heard them by chance\, music floating from an open hotel window that stopped him in his tracks. Captivated\, he made a note to track them down\, and within a year\, that chance encounter led to something bigger. The topography of her work interrogates the intersections of artistry and expression with form and tradition. A singular guitarist and voracious musical collaborator\, Anderson crafts pieces bursting with equal parts reverence and curiosity\, contouring familiar shapes into work that is wholly her own. Anderson has spent decades mining the veins of the complicated\, interconnected American folk traditions she was steeped in from a young age\, stretching beyond those traditions and incorporating the vocabulary and techniques of vernacular and folk musics from across time and beyond boundary into her work. Eschewing replication or revival\, Anderson’s music lives in conversation with tradition. “My approach to tradition is with the hands that I have and the history that I have\,” notes Anderson. “In that way it’s a collaboration—you don’t go into collaboration trying to play like the other person\, you go in trying to find out how to play together.” \nThe Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music is a collection of nearly one thousand songs culled from the private record collection of the late Harry Smith. Assembled by Anderson after a chance encounter led to an opportunity to study and explore this treasure trove of music\, the Anthology focuses on music from places that the United States has been in conflict with since 1970: Southeast Asia\, the USSR\, and the Arabic and Islamic regions of the world. In Volume 1\, Anderson presents her own deeply personal iterations of nine songs from the Anthology. Composed\, transcribed\, and arranged through a process of trial and error\, deep listening\, and research\, Anderson charts a musical course from Afghanistan to Vietnam via Yemen\, Cambodia\, and Turkmenistan. Interpretations of compositions ranging from Pakistani qawwali to Syrian taqsim are played with Anderson’s deft and practiced hands. Each piece on the album stands as a dialogue between Anderson and the original source recording\, refracted through the prism of her own unique musical lens. Anderson’s contribution to this dialogue ultimately invites the listener to join her in asking: “Who are the people we’ve been told in our lifetimes are ‘unamerican’? What have we lost or been denied access to in the fallout from that label?” \nThe ongoing project of the Anthology centers curiosity and a commitment to deep listening as it seeks to build bridges with communities and cultural practices from across the globe. Anderson openly acknowledges the limitations she was working with\, which include an historic lack of access to traditions outside of US markets and frames of reference\, improper documentation within the source material\, and the need to operate within a finite amount of time for explorations of vast cultural traditions. For Anderson\, these are key pieces to the dialogue. “I am a musician\, not an ethnomusicologist or an anthropologist\,” Anderson notes. “I’m curious about how music is made\, organized\, and shared. I am interested in how people and music move across the world\, how war\, migration\, nomadism\, colonization\, and contemporary and historical economic dynamics affect music and musicians. What is the musical relationship of people to place? How is that relationship altered when shifting borders or global conflicts curtail movement or force migration into or away from a place? What do we carry with us when we leave home\, and what do we bring home from faraway places?” \nThe instrumentation Anderson employs here is largely familiar to her: electric and acoustic guitars\, electric keyboards\, requinto jarocho\, accordion\, and tres cubano. The record also features key performances by violinist/violist Gisela Rodríguez Fernández. Aiming to stay true to the essence of the source material\, Anderson pushes her tools past the edges of their traditional territories\, despite knowing that her interpretations will never entirely replicate sounds and phrases built around non-Western musical systems and instruments. Accordion drones bely the flickering tendrils of acoustic guitar on pieces like “Quodlibet\,” while approximating the original’s use of quarter-tones. “Taqsim for Guitar” forgoes a taqsim’s usual use of improvisation in favor of interpreting the source piece’s melodic phrasing more accurately. Considered arrangements of layered keyboards emulate droning flutes on “Pair of Duduk\,” and intertwining guitars take on the winding vocal melodies of “Hamd.” \nFor Anderson\, there are no easy answers. The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music is as much a celebration of music from beyond borders as it is an examination of those borders\, real and imagined\, that restrict movement and curtail the natural flow of music across the globe. Soon\, the idea snowballed into a list of desires that spanned existential\, spiritual\, and mundane; romantic to platonic to familial; at once wildly ambitious yet piercingly relatable; all set to a catchy melody that blends her pop instincts with country storytelling and the raw immediacy of a basement punk show. In other words\, she was on her way to another classic Esther Rose song. \nThis precise blend has made the Santa Fe-based artist one of her generation’s most beloved songwriters: someone whose live shows are known to conclude in mass tears and group hugs. Still\, something was different this time. “For me\, these songs felt like revelations\,” she explains\, comparing the 11-song record to a memoir\, alive with kinetic storytelling and personal insight. In its newly direct and stirringly nuanced writing\, you’ll hear about rock bottom encounters\, shifting relationships with substances\, evolving perspectives on adult partnership\, and\, as evidenced by those early lines in “Want\,” a few jokes along the way. Vivid and bracing\, Want places you in the passenger seat while each of these feelings arrive. \nTo match the multi-dimensional tone of the writing\, Rose has made the most adventurous\, hardest-hitting record of her career. Working with producer Ross Farbe and recording live-to-tape in Nashville’s Bomb Shelter\, she travels as far as she’s been from the stripped-down classic country of celebrated early work like 2017’s This Time Last Night and 2019’s You Made It This Far. That’s it! \nWhile everyone is welcome\, this will be tailored to people who: \n*are new to meditation & may be skeptical or rekindling a practice \n*like the company of sonic vibrations \n*are open to trying this experiment & okay with it being messy \n*want to test their own rigidity and capacity for expansion \n*like the idea of democratizing meditation \nHere’s a general idea of what will happen: \nEach night will include some context\, a guided meditation around the theme\, a short conversation (no one is required to talk\, so introverts don’t run away\, please)\, and a longer meditation using only sound. \nKelly Kelbel \nKelly Kelbel meditates every morning in bed\, mostly using the Happier App. She started meditating shortly after she started chemotherapy out of desperation to find relief from her fear. It worked! Chemo Sessions is a project she created to offer support to folks going through treatment through a letter\, music\, tips from pals\, and guided meditations. She is also a writer and co-owns a synthesizer company\, Make Noise\, in West Asheville. Previously\, she served as a legal advocate for survivors of sexual violence in Chicago and youth being tried as adults in New York City. She was a founding teacher of the School for Democracy and Leadership in Brooklyn\, and directed the Rise Project at Warren Wilson College. \nwww.kellykelbel.com \nTony Rolando \nTony Rolando meditates irregularly\, but notices a benefit every time he does a sit. He often uses the quiet. He is a self-taught electronic musical instrument designer who got started by obsessively reading Amateur Radio Relay League books at the public library\, building electronics for artists\, such as the light controlled remixer for Simon Lee’s “Bus Obscura” which debuted at the Whitney Biennial\, working for Moog Music\, and always playing music. Tony has recently released music with Important Records and the Asheville based Ceremony of Seasons.
