SUMMARY:PERFORMANCE: Yarn/Wire performs Annea Lockwood and Katherine Young
DESCRIPTION:Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center presents the Yarn/Wire quartet\, performing compositions by Annea Lockwood and Katherine Young. \nThe Yarn/Wire ensemble will perform the second realization of their Fromm Foundation-supported project in collaboration with composer Katherine Young\, entitled BIOMES 6.1. They will also perform the music of Annea Lockwood\, a legendary composer\, sound artist\, and acoustic ecologist and member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, who is renowned for her focus on the effects of sound in our environments. \n——–\nDescribed by The New York Times as “key figures from the contemporary music scene… with unmistakable devotion and excitement\,” Yarn/Wire is a New York-based percussion and piano quartet (Sae Hashimoto and Russell Greenberg\, percussion; Laura Barger and Julia Den Boer\, pianos) dedicated to the promotion of creative\, experimental new music. \nSince its formation in 2005\, the ensemble has become a fixture at the world’s preeminent halls and music festivals\, making its German debut in two concerts at the prestigious Donaueschingen Musiktage in 2023. Yarn/Wire’s 2023-24 season includes a residency at IRCAM; performances at the Eclat Festival and Monday Evening Concerts; an appearance at the Bergen International Festival with JACK Quartet; Øyvind Torvund’s The Sound of the Forest at the Ultima Festival in Norway; as well as several high profile NYC performances. Yarn/Wire holds educational and performance residencies this season at Emory University\, Georgia Tech\, and UC Berkeley. \nTheir ongoing commissioning series\, Yarn/Wire/Currents\, serves as an incubator for new experimental music in partnership with a variety of Brooklyn-based institutions. Yarn/Wire has recorded for the WERGO\, Kairos\, New Amsterdam\, Northern Spy\, Distributed Objects\, Black Truffle\, Shelter Press\, Populist\, and Carrier record labels\, in addition to maintaining its own imprint. \nSince 2014\, the ensemble has hosted the annual Yarn/Wire International Institute and Festival for composers and performers interested in exploring the collaborative side of contemporary music. SUMMARY:ELEMENTS OF BMC: Fiber Workshop
DESCRIPTION:ELEMENTS OF BMC is a new series that explores the fundamental parts of creative practice at Black Mountain College\, highlighting a range of artistic mediums and techniques. The series investigates the role of these elements in shaping the college’s legacy and lasting influence on contemporary art.\nAttendees will have the opportunity to explore new creative forms while learning about key artworks from the BMCM+AC Permanent Collection\, demonstrating connections across time. For the first iteration of our ELEMENTS series\, join us for a weaving and fiber arts workshop with Maya Rosenbaum\, BMCM+AC Communications Coordinator. \nWeaving was one of the most popular subjects taught at Black Mountain College and held an important place at the heart of the College’s legendary art and design curriculum. The weaving program was started in 1934 by Anni Albers and lasted until the College closed in 1956. Weaving practices and ideas spread beyond the weaving program into other areas of the College\, engendering a broader “weaving literacy” amongst the community. The recent exhibition Weaving at Black Mountain College explored the profound influence of textile practices on BMC pedagogy. \nThe workshop is open to learners of all ages and experience levels. Participants will learn to weave on a small tapestry hand loom and will explore different fibers through touch. We will provide all of the necessary materials including hand looms\, yarn\, and tapestry needles. More experienced fiber enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their own materials\, too. As part of the workshop\, participants can explore a pop-up exhibition of selected textile objects from the BMCM+AC Permanent Collection which tell the story of weaving at BMC. This workshop will take place in the BMCM+AC library and is free and open to the public\, no registration required.

DESCRIPTION:BMCM+AC will host David Silver\, co-curator of The Farm at Black Mountain College\, for a gallery walk-and-talk alongside a book launch / signing event. Join us for an in-depth look at the Farm story and a celebration of the exhibition. This event is free and open to all. \nBuilt on more than a decade’s worth of deep\, original archival research\, The Farm at Black Mountain College constitutes a comprehensive new history of Black Mountain College. By focusing on the farm\, the exhibition sidesteps the popular paradigm of approaching BMC through its famous faculty and students\, and instead offers a new cast of characters\, one that includes mostly students\, women\, and farmers. It spotlights the importance of collaboration\, both on campus among students\, faculty\, and faculty families\, and in the community with farmers and organizations in nearby cities and towns. Finally\, the exhibition shows what happens when communal living is no longer communal\, and offers the first ever detailed account of the fall of the college\, a dramatic and often dangerous story. \nPresented in BMCM+AC’s lower gallery\, the contemporary installation DEER FREAKS…and decoys explores the hyper-natural forces of attraction and repulsion informing our interactions with the landscapes we inhabit. From fence rows to scare-crows\, DEER FREAKS documents the creative ways people propagate\, shape\, lure\, and protect in their environments. This multi-media\, multi-layered project of Swannatopia responds to the themes of The Farm at Black Mountain College.
