SUMMARY:New Belgium Asheville Marathon and Half
DESCRIPTION:The New Belgium Asheville Marathon & Half is back this year with a new perspective\, renewed purpose\, and a story that’s unlike any other. In September\, Hurricane Helene brought devastation to our beloved city in ways we never imagined. For a moment\, we weren’t sure this event could happen. Then\, city officials reached out with a simple yet powerful message: We need running back. And they were right. \nThis year\, the New Belgium Asheville Marathon & Half isn’t just about crossing the finish line; it’s about uniting as locals and visitors to rally around a city that refuses to stay down. The landscape may look a little different\, but the spirit of Asheville shines brighter than ever. Together\, we’ll run through the scars of the storm\, celebrate our vibrant community\, and remind the world what it means to rise stronger in the face of adversity. \nThis is more than a race. This is Asheville’s comeback story. We hope you’ll join us in writing the next chapter.

SUMMARY:Asheville’s International Women’s Day - Unite & Resist
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 8th 2025 – Bring your signs & your voice to the sidewalks in the center of Pack Square Park at 1 Court Plaza\, Asheville\, NC 28801 \nWomen’s March\nhttps://action.womensmarch.com/events/international-women-s-day-unite-resist-in-city-town-32 \nStarting at 11:00 a.m.\, we will gather to honor the relentless pursuit of justice and equality by women throughout history and protest Trump’s attempt to erase their contributions. \nThe 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote—a monumental step toward gender equality. Yet\, as we stand here in 2025\, we recognize that the journey toward true equality is far from complete. \nIn recent months\, our nation has witnessed a series of actions by President Donald Trump’s administration that threaten to undermine the progress generations of women have fought so hard to achieve. \nWomen Who Paved the Way: \n* Sojourner Truth – American abolitionist and activist for African American civil rights and women’s rights \n* Elizabeth Cady Stanton – Advocate for women’s legal and social equality \n* Susan B. Anthony – Leader of the women’s suffrage movement and social reformer \n* Ida B. Wells-Barnett – Civil rights activist who led a campaign against lynching in the 1890s \n* Cecilia Chung – Civil rights leader and activist for LGBTQ+ rights \n* Peggy Bird\, Darlene Correa\, and Genne James – Founders of the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women (CSVANW) \n* Sylvia Rivera – American transgender rights activist \n* Judy Heumann – American disability rights activist \n* Luisa Moreno – Guatemalan social activist and labor movement participant in the U.S. \n* Grace A. Peterson – First female Chief Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force \nThe proposed 8% budget cut to the Pentagon over the next five years\, as reported by The Guardian\, raises concerns about the potential impact on programs that support women in the military. Additionally\, the significant layoffs at the IRS—where over 6\,700 staff members are expected to be dismissed—will disproportionately affect women employed in these roles and hinder services many women rely upon. \nMoreover\, the administration’s executive orders cutting federal benefits for undocumented immigrants not only marginalize vulnerable communities but also disregard the contributions of countless women who are integral to the fabric of our society. These actions reflect a broader pattern of policies that neglect the rights and well-being of women. \nOur response to these challenges must be unwavering. We draw inspiration from the Women’s March on Washington in 2017\, where millions united globally to advocate for women’s rights and social justice. That historic event demonstrated the power of collective action and set the stage for continued resistance against policies that threaten our freedoms. \nOn March 8th\, we must stand in solidarity with all women—transgender\, cisgender\, women of color\, immigrants\, LGBTQ+ individuals\, and those with disabilities. Our diversity is our strength\, and our unity is our power. We must continue to organize\, speak out\, and demand policies that uphold the dignity and rights of every woman \nLet us honor the legacy of those who came before us by recommitting ourselves to the fight for equality. Let us challenge any administration that seeks to roll back our rights. And let us envision a future where every woman has the opportunity to thrive\, free from discrimination and oppression. \nTogether\, we are a force for change. Together\, we will achieve equality.

SUMMARY:The 14th Surreal Sirkus Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Friends\, it is time once again for Asheville’s most fantastical festival of freakiness and fun… The Surreal Sirkus Arts Festival! As always\, this is a FREE community event\, brought to you by Arts 2 People\, the organization that put on LAAFF for 15 years downtown.\nThis year’s festival will be bigger than ever with three music stages\, a community storytelling tent\, dozens of art vendors\, food\, beer and other libations\, and of course\, the highlight of the evening: the sunset performance by Surreal Sirkus.\nThe main stage at the Amphitheater in front of City Hall will feature live bands and musicians from Asheville and beyond. It will culminate in the Surreal Sirkus Main Show at 7:30 pm\, which will showcase an array of performers\, including aerialists\, fire spinners\, puppeteers\, jugglers\, dancers\, and other circus acts.\nThis year’s show tells the story of one man’s journey after death\, and the beings he encounters along the way. Unifire Theater\, Street Creature Puppets\, and many other local performance groups will take part in the show.\nAlso\, this year\, Arts 2 People has partnered with Create Fest\, a local organization bringing diverse communities together through the arts. They will host an Open Mic & Showcase on the Reuter Terrace\, from noon until 7 p.m. The terrace will also be home to a number of interactive exhibits and spaces for audience participation.\nMeanwhile\, at North Pack Square\, there will be two more performance areas: an EDM stage on the raised lawn featuring some of Asheville’s finest DJ’s\, and a Storytelling Tent located on the site of the former Vance Monument.\nThe latter is intended as a space for folks from around the region to share their personal stories as a way of bringing the community together in a spirit of healing and greater understanding of each other. (If you have a story you’d like to share\, please DM us here or email: surrealsirkus@gmail.com)\nAnd of course the Surreal Sirkus Arts Festival will include more than 50 local vendors showcasing their unique artworks and handmade crafts\, as well as food\, beer\, and mixed drinks\, which will be available for sale at the Roger McGuire Green.\nThe Surreal Sirkus has deep roots in the history of the town’s artistic life. It existed as both an annual event and a performance troupe of the same name from 1996 to 2005\, when it was a staple of the city’s underground arts scene. It was resurrected in 2021 for the event’s 25th anniversary with the help of Arts 2 People.\nThe Surreal Sirkus Arts Festival is made possible by support from our sponsors\, including:\nArts 2 People\nArts AVL\nBuncombe County\nNorth Carolina Arts Council\nCreate Fest\nCreate Inc\nCafé Canna\nThe Well\nJenBen Media\nRaven & Crone\nAsheville FM\nWest Village Market & Deli\nDropp Science\nSpiral Enterprises\nAnd more to come!
