SUMMARY:Poetry Primer: The Curious Practice of Paying Attention
DESCRIPTION:This full-bodied\, 5-week poetry series will guide participants from “Ooof\, poetry” to “Where’s my journal?!” by buoying artistic play and cultivating attention. We’ll take notice of neon color palettes\, everyday coffee-shop conversation\, rhythmic twitches in the body\, the gruff and warm-hearted voice of life\, and see what happens when we revolutionize those noticings into language. Weaving together poetic elements + form\, guided discussion\, and past poetic works\, we’ll step into a multidisciplinary creative space! Plus\, oodles (oodles!) of writing time to build confidence and craft. This class immerses itself in artful experimentation and skill building. It’s the ultimate permission slip to be a beginner or to reignite passion around well-worn skills.

SUMMARY:Make Your Mark: Drawing Improv Workshop | Taught by Greg Benge
DESCRIPTION:An empty page is a lot like an empty stage. Many people who want to draw are stopped by self-consciousness and comparison. Even working artists and performers can become rigid\, disconnected from spontaneity. \nIn this 2-day workshop\, we’ll employ the values of improvisation to increase creative confidence and encourage play. \nWe’ll cover things like:\n– Simple drawing tips and practical techniques for clearer\, more confident mark-making\n– Discussing how drawings can generate scenes\, and how scenes can generate drawings\n– Appreciating drawing as a live\, relational act—not a final product\n– Visual drawing exercises that build upon each other \nThis 2-day workshop is designed for improvisors of all artistic skill levels to foster thinking visually and explore the vibrant relationship between drawing and performing. Participants will learn emerging improvisational drawing formats and collaborate to design their own novel format.

SUMMARY:Joyride Improv Workshop: Winning Is for Losers
DESCRIPTION:June 20 & 21 | 1:00 – 4:00 PM | Story Parlor \nIn improv\, the moment you try to “win” the scene\, you often lose the thing that matters most: connection. \nThis two-day improv workshop focuses on letting go of control\, negotiation\, and performance instincts so you can create scenes that feel honest\, alive\, and deeply connected. Through exercises and scene work\, we’ll practice active listening\, playing from presence\, and discovering the scene together instead of forcing ideas onto it. \nPlayers can also look forward to personalized feedback and heavy side coaching from Stevie\, Joyride Improv Founder & Teacher. \nWe’ll explore:\n– Connection over conflict\n– Discovery over invention\n– Resisting the urge to negotiate\n– Seeking to be affected and authentic emotional responses\n– Finding the answer in your scene partner’s eyes \nWhen improvisers stop trying to win\, scenes become more surprising\, human\, and meaningful. The best scenes aren’t won—they’re shared\, collaboratively built\, and embodied.

SUMMARY:Becomyth - We Begin In Chaos - Night 3: Book of Evocation
DESCRIPTION:Night 3 | The Book of Evocation \nThe final installment enters the dreamworld of a young child on the edge of understanding. Through the lens of two reimagined Chinese creation myths\, The Book of Evocation explores the vulnerability\, wonder\, and failure that often accompany the creative act. As worlds flicker into form and fall apart again\, the performance evokes the deep inner work of becoming—and the courage it takes to begin\, again \nABOUT THE SERIES \nBecomyth: We Begin in Chaos is a performance art project created by Adam J. N. Keene and Langston Kelly that delves into the nature of beginnings—why they challenge us\, why they matter\, and what transformation takes place in the act of starting anew. Drawing from global creation myths—some of the oldest maps we have for navigating the unknown—Becomyth investigates “chaotic beginnings” as a form of mythological sensemaking: a tool for navigating uncertainty\, transformation\, and potential. \nBlending music\, myth\, and theatrical storytelling\, Keene and Kelly invite audiences on a cosmic journey where ancient stories are reborn and new myths take root. Each evening in the three-part series presents original performances inspired by global creation stories—fusing dreamlike worlds with powerful archetypes to ask: What does it mean to begin? And who do we become in the process?

SUMMARY:Becomyth - We Begin In Chaos - Night 2: Book of Convocation
DESCRIPTION:Night 2 | The Book of Convocation\nThe second performance draws the audience into a mythic gathering—a convocation of old and new stories in conversation with one another. Here\, elemental forces clash and yield\, and from their tension\, new worlds take shape. The Book of Convocation invites participants to step inside this mythic conversation—where the act of witnessing becomes an act of creation\, and the fate of the story hangs in the balance. \nABOUT THE SERIES \nBecomyth: We Begin in Chaos is a performance art project created by Adam J. SUMMARY:Becomyth - We Begin In Chaos - Night 1: Book of Invocation
DESCRIPTION:Night 1 | The Book of Invocation\nThe opening chapter of the Becomyth trilogy sets the stage with a theatrical meditation on the chaos of beginnings—where nothing is certain\, and everything is possible. The Book of Invocation beckons us to the edge of the unknown and invites us to step across. \nABOUT THE SERIES \nBecomyth: We Begin in Chaos is a performance art project created by Adam J. N. SUMMARY:Five Spice - A Talk Show 五味人生
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of heartfelt connection and creative exchange as Shunyu Huang\, former Story Parlor Artist-in-Residence\, invites a guest from Asheville’s BIPOC community—who\, in turn\, brings a friend of their own—to the table. \nThe first half of the evening is a relaxed roundtable conversation where the trio\, over a shared pot of tea\, explores the “five flavors of life”—sourness\, sweetness\, bitterness\, saltiness\, and spiciness. Through curious and thoughtful questions\, they uncover the common threads that connect us all. \nIn the second half\, the guest artists take to the stage for a collaborative performance weaving together elements from the full evening. \nThis intimate and dynamic event continues the work of Shunyu’s residency\, Memory Quilt\, celebrating connection\, creativity\, and the rich tapestry of our shared humanity.

SUMMARY:The Campfireball: Humans vs. Holidays
DESCRIPTION:Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse\, here come the Holidays breathing down our necks. Sure\, it starts out nice\, pretty decorations\, warm feelings\, but all that slowly starts to crumble as we stress ourselves to the brink searching for the perfect gift\, or not being able to escape our weird family\, or being reminded or our fundamental loneliness. At The Campfireball: Humans vs. Holidays at Story Parlor on December 12th you finally have a chance to fight back. In this battle for the ages\, the audience will go toe-to-toe with the ghosts of Christmases past\, present\, and future (plus all the other holidays from ‘this time of year’) in a part game-show\, part existential escape room\, part group therapy immersive storytelling experience. Mark your calendars\, the fate of humanity depends on you.
