SUMMARY:Hemlock Treatment Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is hosting a demonstration of chemical treatment methods to control the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) on Saturday\, June 13th from 9am to 12pm at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa\, NC. \nHemlock trees in western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. These trees have been suffering for over two decades from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, an invasive insect that can kill the tree in as little as four years. \nHowever\, hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before. This hands-off demonstration will be useful for landowners\, natural resource managers and tree care professionals. We will use the trees on-site to practice assessing hemlock health to determine the best treatment options\, and HRI staff will demonstrate the HWA chemical treatment methods used on national forest and state lands. These methods are available to all private landowners in North Carolina without obtaining a license or certification. We will also discuss applicator and environmental safety\, special considerations and guidance for hiring a tree care professional. \nThe backup weather date for this event will be Saturday\, June 27th. Please also note that the demonstration will occur on a slightly sloped surface and some demonstrations may require climbing a short hill to view them. \nNC pesticide applicators can earn 3 credits for attending (categories G\, L\, N\, D\, and X)\, and ISA members can earn CEUs (credits currently pending). \nRegistration is required. Please visit our website to register. Email education@savehemlocksnc.org or call 828-252-4783 with questions about the event.

SUMMARY:Nielsen Big Idea Lecture: Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika
DESCRIPTION:Warren Wilson College is honored to welcome Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika as the featured speaker for their Nielsen Big Idea Lecture in Fall 2025. \nDr. Kumanyika is a celebrated journalist\, scholar\, and audio storyteller whose work has reshaped how we understand American history and identity. His Peabody Award–winning podcast Uncivil unearthed untold stories of the Civil War\, while his groundbreaking series Empire City— named one of the top podcasts of 2024 by The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and The Atlantic— explores the history and impact of the New York Police Department. He is also widely known for his contributions to the acclaimed podcast Seeing White\, which examines the history of race and whiteness in America. \nCurrently an assistant professor at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute\, Dr. Kumanyika specializes in historically focused\, narrative non-fiction audio journalism. His work challenges deeply rooted American myths\, particularly around race\, policing\, and national identity\, inviting audiences to confront history with clarity and courage. \nIn this lecture\, Dr. Kumanyika will share insights from his podcasting career and research\, tracing the legacies of policing in New York City while also reflecting on the power of narrative storytelling to shift public understanding. \nJoin us for an evening of compelling ideas\, bold storytelling\, and a vital conversation about how history\, myth\, and media shape our present. The lecture will be from 7 to 8:30\, with a reception to follow. The event is open to the public and all are welcome. No registration is required. \nVisitors from off campus should park in the Admissions parking lot located just beyond Orr Cottage\, located at 114 Lower College Rd\, Swannanoa\, NC.
