Visiting the studio and gallery of Suzanne Gernandt Mixed Media Textiles and Kathryn Abernathy Art is an uplifting experience. “We put positivity and optimism in our work,” says Kathryn, a painter of bold abstracts and meditative landscapes. (Kathryn is this month’s cover artist. For more about her, see the story on page 10.) Suzanne is a self-taught weaver who hand-dyes her yarns and uses many different media to create elegant and contemporary silk scarves, purses, and wall pieces, each with a textile quality. In addition to using European linens and Japanese silks, Suzanne may also paint on paper or canvas, cut it up, and weave the pieces. “Since I was a child, I liked puzzles and figuring out how pieces fit together,” she says. Reflecting a beautiful philosophy, Suzanne says, “I look for the imperfections in the cloth. I see the beauty in the imperfections.”
Abernathy-Gernandt Studio & Gallery is located at 372 Depot Street, Suite 20, in the River Arts District. For more information on Kathryn and Suzanne, visit kathrynabernathy.com and suzannetextiles.com, or call 828.989.5146, and 828.400.1040, respectively.
