Asheville Fine Art Show

Sculptural woodturning. Steve Miller, artist

Hot Works’ 3rd Asheville Fine Art Show takes place Saturday and Sunday, October 27 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. outdoors at Pack Square Park. The juried show features original handmade works in a wide range of disciplines including painting, sculpture, glass, clay, fiber, wood, photography and jewelry.

Among the 100 professional artists in attendance will be Black Mountain resident Steve Miller, exhibiting his textured, burned and often painted or stained sculptural woodturnings. Though Miller will display a few traditional pieces, most of his current body of work is purely aesthetic, designed to hold nothing other than the viewer’s attention. “I enjoy doing a select few art shows per year, as they allow me to see people’s reactions to my work firsthand,” he says. “I pay attention to what people seem to like, as well as what they don’t.”

Glass artist David Russell, of Camden, will also be present, exhibiting colorful vessels with an emphasis on line work as surface decoration. Russell employs the Venetian technique of zanfirico, using colored glass threads to create rods with spiraling patterns that are then manipulated to make a complex and delicately patterned vessel. “Selling directly to an enthusiastic audience is a great feeling,” he says. “This show specifically is meaningful to me since Asheville is where I discovered glass and began to learn my trade in the 1990s.”

Professional artists will be awarded ribbons and $1,500 in cash prizes. Youth artists who win the competition open to grades K–8, or ages 5–13, will be awarded $250 in cash prizes. All youth entries will be publicly displayed at the show.
