Get Ready to Swing with Tuba Skinny in Marshall

Mardi Gras may be in early February, but it will continue in grand New Orleans’ fashion beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, when Tuba Skinny takes over the Madison County Arts Center for a dance and concert.

Tuba Skinny is a traditional jazz band based in the Big Easy, and is comprised of a tuba (naturally enough), cornet, six-string banjo, guitar, clarinet, and washboard. Its music is derived from the jazz and blues of the 1920s and 1930s, and the group is helping to keep alive some of the greatest music our country has created.

The band has performed around the world, including music festivals in Mexico, Sweden, Italy, France, Switzerland, Spain, and Australia. Joanna Bowe, of australianstage.com, wrote about a Tuba Skinny concert in Adelaide: “Transported back to the 1920s, the audience crowded around tables and onto the dance floor, while everyone bathed in the music and its movement.”

Owl Call Blues, Tuba Skinny’s 2014 recording, received Offbeat Magazine’s recognition as the best traditional jazz album of the year (an award given to Louisiana musicians).

Laura Boosinger, Madison County Arts Council executive director, says, “Polish up your eight-count step, lighten up your Charleston, and jitterbug down to the river in Marshall for a fun afternoon of swinging and swaying!”

Tickets are $11. For more information, visit madisoncountyarts.com or call 828.649.1301.
