Exhibits Through April at Blue Spiral 1

Opening March 3 and running through April 29 are three special exhibitions at Blue Spiral 1, 38 Biltmore Avenue in downtown Asheville.

On the gallery’s large main level space is an exhibit of recent works by North Carolina artists Will Dickert, Ward H. Nichols, Zack Noble, and Tom Shields. These pieces, each embracing a textural aesthetic, include hyper-realistic paintings and objects in wood-fired clay, forged iron, and reclaimed furniture. They all, in their own way, evoke a sense of rustic charm that can only come with age and wear.

Original drawings by local artist Kreh Mellick are featured in Blue Spiral’s Small Format Room. Personality and pattern define compelling gouache on paper works, which often feature cutout elements. Kreh says her work “relate(s) fictions inspired by folklore, nostalgia, and a time passed.” She adds that all of her drawings tell a story.

A fiber exhibition, Contemporary Southern Textiles, is in the gallery’s lower level. Six artists—Erin E. Castellan, Andrea Donnelly, Nava Lubelski, Rachel Meginnes, Rena Wood, and Grace Zuñiga—transcend tradition creating conceptual textile works akin to abstract paintings.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For further information, visit bluespiral1.com or call 828.251.0202. Blue Spiral 1 is a member of the Downtown Asheville Art Association. For more information on the First Friday Art Walk, see page 76 for a map.
