The International Storytelling Center (located at 100 W. Main Street in Jonesborough, Tennessee) offers many opportunities for audiences of all ages to enjoy the craft of telling stories. Storytelling Live! is a six-month-long series—May 3 through October 29—that features a different nationally-renowned storyteller each week in daily matinees, evening concerts, workshops, and Saturday morning children’s shows. These 26 visiting storytellers are known as tellers-in-residence since they each spend a week in Jonesborough for this series. This month’s tellers-in-residences are Bil Lepp, Megan Hicks, Adam Booth, Dolores Hydock, and Willy Claflin. Matinee performances take place Tuesday through Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets for matinee performances are $12 for adults, and $11 for seniors, students, and children under 18. Saturday morning children’s shows are recommended for ages 6–10. Admission is $5 and reservations are encouraged. “We started Storytelling Live! as a way to introduce some of our most talented tellers from the National Storytelling Festival to a broader audience,” says Susan O’Connor, director of programs for the International Storytelling Center. “A six-month season gives us the opportunity to not only offer breadth, but also depth, and time to explore a wide array of traditions from all over the world.” The National Storytelling Festival is scheduled for October 7–9. Evening concerts feature the finest works of many tellers-in-residence. On Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m., join Bil Lepp for tall tales and witty stories. Tickets are $15.
