Spring brings us new beginnings, especially when it comes to gardening. Whether you’re searching for new perennials or a work of art for your backyard, Garden Jubilee in downtown Hendersonville will have exactly what you need. On Saturday and Sunday, May 28–29, more than 200 vendors will line Main Street, from Sixth Avenue to Caswell Street, along with regional gardening experts who will share tips and tricks.
Local and regional nurseries will offer annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, and hard-tofind plants, while crafters will showcase lawn furniture, jewelry, garden tools, yard art, planters, wind chimes, birdhouses, soaps, and pottery. “Our goal has been to grow the Garden Jubilee into one of the premier outdoor garden events in the Southeast,” says Beth Carden, executive director of the Hendersonville County Tourism Development Authority, which organizes this event.
Mauli McDonald, of Art of Nature, will travel to Hendersonville from her home in New Hampshire for her first Garden Jubilee. She will bring with her botanical landscapes, which are preserved floral designs with a rustic flair.
Another first-time vendor, Mary Mason, of Rustyclay Creations, is no stranger to the event. “In previous years I have walked the garden jubilee event in admiration of the many different plants and flowers available,” she told The Laurel. “I love the samples of yard ponds and waterfalls that are available, and dream about what would be possible in my yard some day.” Mary works from her home studio in Hendersonville and creates mixed media garden art.
Tim and Matthew Nichols, of mrmaple.com will also participate. They grow more than a thousand varieties of Japanese maples and more than 150 types of gingko trees. Based in Flat Rock, their business has participated in the event for more than a decade.
The Lowe’s Expo in the Visitors Center, 201 S. Main Street, offers lawn and garden workshops, plants for sale, and a hands-on kids clinic that runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Representatives from national garden products will be available to give out free samples and helpful tips.
Landscape and gardening specialist Bill Slack will host gardening workshops. His presentation, “Gorgeous Landscape: Maximize Beauty/Minimize Effort,” will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. “Annuals & Perennials: Colorful Garden Accessories” will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. At 3 p.m. on Saturday, he will present “Help! I Don’t Have Sun in My Yard.”
Please leave your pets at home, but it’s advisable to bring a wagon to help transport your purchases around the event.
