River Guerguerian
World-renowned percussionist River Guerguerian says, “Rhythm and pulse are integral elements of the human fabric.” River is the director of the annual Asheville Percussion Festival, an event designed to promote musical diversity and to create a space where drummers can enhance their artistry.
The festival is being held this year Friday through Sunday, June 17–19, at Odyssey Community School, 90 Zillicoa Street. The event will consist of performances and workshops for all levels.
More than 20 workshops—taught by performers with international reputations—are being planned for people of all skill levels. Among the workshop topics are performing, improvising, composing, and dancing.
Also being offered will be a series of wellness workshops sponsored by Four Seasons Compassion for Life, including Conscious Drumming, Introduction to the Role of a Music Therapist, and Music Therapy.
There will be a Masters Concert at 8 P.M. on Saturday, June 18, at Diana Wortham Theatre that will feature collaborative compositions by the teaching artists.
