Pan Harmonia Combines Music and Art
Pan Harmonia launches its 17th season with two chamber music concerts in Asheville and Brevard at both Haen Gallery locations.
The first performance this season is Monday, September 12, at the gallery at 52 Biltmore Avenue in Asheville. A wine reception begins at 6:30 p.m. and music starts at 7:15 p.m. The following Sunday, September 18, a second opener will be held at 100 King Street in Brevard with tea served at 3 p.m. and music at 3:30 p.m.
A trio consisting of Kate Steinbeck on flute, Rosalind Buda on bassoon, and Amy Brucksch on guitar will perform works from a diverse mix of composers. New works and masterpieces by J.S. Bach, American lyricists Gary Schocker and George Gershwin, Swedish sound designer Frederik Holm, and Choro master Ernesto Nazareth will be played.
“We love bringing our signature mix of chamber music masterpieces and new works to as many listeners as possible through informal performances and adventurous programming,” says Kate, who directs the repertory company.
Hosting the openings in the art galleries draws connections between visual and aural arts. The program, entitled Soundscapes, is inspired by one of Holm’s pieces. His sister owns an Abell flute, Rosalind says. “Our flutist, Kate, is married to flutemaker and Grovewood Studios artist Chris Abell, so this connection is through an Asheville-produced instrument.”
Pan Harmonia, Asheville’s award-winning chamber music company, is comprised of a core group of professional musicians drawn from the area’s finest players. The company offers a variety of concerts throughout the season along with educational residencies and community outreach.
Other events this season include a chamber music chat on Friday, September 9, at 3 p.m. at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on the UNCA campus. On Sunday, September 25, at 3 p.m., the schedule features the Asheville Baroque Concert Series at Oakley United Methodist Church in Asheville.
