Asheville Ballet Opens Season with “Fall into Dance”
North Carolina’s oldest nonprofit adult ballet company returns for a fresh new season with “Fall into Dance: An Autumn Harvest 2.” After a summer of coming up with ideas and cultivating creative movements, Asheville Ballet’s cachet of talented choreographers will present a series of new dances in this season premiere. Grab a blanket or lawn chair and head downtown on Friday and Saturday, September 23–24, for the 7:30 p.m. show, which will be presented on the stage of Roger McGuire Park near Pack Square in downtown Asheville, for an hour of dance and live music outdoors. Although the concert is free, donations will be accepted.
The concert’s program will vary from classical to contemporary, from literary to sublime. Artistic director Ann Dunn will present two original works. Inspired by Ann’s family and the characters in Louisa May Alcott’s novel Little Women, “Four Sisters” will be set to Beethoven’s sonata, “Moonlight.” The second piece, titled “Walking the Streets,” will be accompanied by an original rock and jazz percussion solo. It expresses the joy of moving through urban landscapes. Ballet mistress Fleming Lomax explores the ethereal world of wishes in her new work, while Tricia Henshaw’s dance explores the characteristics of the autumnal season. The evening also includes pieces by all eight of the company’s choreographers, including associate artistic director Lyle Laney, Rebecca O’Quinn, Sandi Weinberg, Gypsy Adams, and Jessica Hodgins.
“Fall into Dance” is just the beginning of the Asheville Ballet Company’s magical season, which will continue with seasonal favorite “The Nutcracker” December 8–11 and “Spring into Dance: A Movement Bouquet” May 26–27.
