Wisteria and the Familiars. Julie Armbruster, artist
Miya Gallery presents Space, an exhibition of works by artists Julie Armbruster and Millie Weeks exploring celestial themes that blend creativity and imagination. The show opens with a reception on Friday, June 20, from 6–9 p.m.
The Space exhibition emerged from a spontaneous conversation between Armbruster and Weeks, who both found a shared interest in the cosmic wonders of stars, moons and planets. Armbruster, known for her whimsical and imaginative paintings, began exploring lunar themes in her work.
“With [Weeks’] lovely juxtaposition of shapes and mark making, and my current exploration of the 12 full moons of the year, it just made perfect sense to synthesize 2D space, spatial relations and outer space,” she says.

Does She Remember? Millie Weeks, artist
Armbruster’s works in the show will include paintings on wood panel and cold press watercolor paper, as well as some 3D sculptures such as plushies and clay creations. “Even though the visible stars have been named and there are lots of constellations that are easily recognizable, if we can look at the great expanse of space and sky with fresh eyes and an open mind, there is so much potential for imagination and invention.”
Weeks, an Asheville native and accomplished abstract painter, has expanded her artistic practice to jewelry design, creating star rings as part of her exploration of the celestial theme. “My paintings require me to be present in the moment, loose, open to movement and mistakes,” she says. “When metalsmithing, I have to be completely focused.”
The distinct approaches of these two artists ensure that Space will be a dynamic exhibition. “I think the combination of our work will create an exciting and unique show, made to see in person,” says Weeks.
