Spruce Pine Potters Market Set for October 8–9

Now in its tenth year, the Spruce Pine Potters Market will be open October 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The work of 34 ceramic artists will be on display and for sale. The Market is known for providing a premier shopping venue for the work of artists who are known regionally, nationally and internationally. Work includes functional pottery, figurative sculpture, stoneware and earthenware.

“Although this region is known for its concentration of artists featured during the Toe River Arts Council’s biannual open-studio tours, the Spruce Pine Potters Market offers buyers the opportunity to see new work from leading artists in one location,” says event publicist Ellen Denker. “For the artists, too, this is a chance to meet their patrons, see each other’s new work and visit with colleagues.”

While admission to the market is free, visitors are encouraged to purchase raffle tickets for work donated by artists Courtney Martin, Jane Peiser, Michael Kline, and Jon Ellenbogen and Becky Plummer of Barking Spider Pottery. A portion of the raffle proceeds will go to the Toe River Arts Council.

Naomi Dalglish and Michael Hunt of Bandana Pottery have been involved with the Potters Market since its inception. The couple makes functional tableware from local clay and glaze materials and fired in a wood kiln. “We both are involved in all parts of the making and decorating process. We are constantly designing and refining our work together,” says Daglish. “It is really exhilarating to be in a room full of such fine work, and to know that visitors are gaining a deeper understanding of our work by witnessing the relationships we have with each other and the beautiful mountains where we all live.”

Other participating artists are Stan Andersen, Will Baker, Pam Brewer, Cynthia Bringle, John Britt, Melisa Cadell, Claudia Dunaway, Susan Feagin, Terry Gess, Becky Gray, Shawn Ireland, Lisa Joerling, Nick Joerling, Shaunna Lyons, Linda McFarling, Kent McLaughlin, Jeannine Marchand, Shane Mickey, Teresa Pietsch, Michael Rutkowsky, Valerie Schnaufer, Ken Sedberry, Jenny Lou Sherburne, Ron Slagle, Gay Smith, Liz Zlot Summerfield and Joy Tanner.

The market is held in the Cross Street Building, 31 Cross Street, in Spruce Pine. Admission and parking are free and lunches will be available for purchase. For more information visit sprucepinepottersmarket.com or call 828.765.2670.
