An annual event of the Caldwell Arts Council (CAC), Satie’s Holiday Sale will be held December 2–24 in downtown Lenoir. Named for Satie Hunt Broyhill, a patron of the arts whose 1923 house is now home to the CAC, this juried sale features works of about 80 artists—everything from crocheted baby hats to glass ornaments.
“Shoppers come from around the region seeking quality, handmade, original items for gifting,” says Cathy McCoy, CAC’s administrative assistant. Items are sold on consignment, with CAC’s portion of sales helping to fund such programs as Artists-in-Schools, Junior Appalachian Musicians and the Happy Valley Fiddlers Convention as well as grants, competitions and summer camps.
Among the artists represented in the sale, Andrea Zahler has been creating teddy bears for more than 35 years. She uses the traditional fake fur to create some of them, but also incorporates old quilts, chenille and ticking into her designs. “They always seem to have their own personalities,” she says. She works on them all year long and adds chenille snowmen and string angels to her offerings for the holiday sale.
Chad Triplett’s wooden toys can be found in stores and museums throughout the southeast. “Many of the toys we make,” he says, “were made by individuals in rural areas who had to hand make toys for their children.” Most are considered folk toys, he adds, and have been around the Appalachian Mountains a long time. “The dancing man or, as some call him, the lumberjack, and the cup and ball (or ball tosser) are some of the oldest, while we make many cars, trucks and tractors of our own design.”
The Caldwell Arts Council is located at 601 College Avenue in downtown Lenoir. Hours for the sale are Monday through Thursday 9 A.M. to 6 P.M., Friday 9 A.M. to 7 P.M. and Saturday 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. For more information, visit caldwellarts.com
